    Entrapment : the action of tricking someone into committing a crime in order to secure their prosecution

    • @DJtheMJ

      Legally that can only happen in the position of law enforcement, the decoys of PJ were never officers. So legally, it doesn't count as the definition of entrapment.

      @Stephen Hawking Okay but we both can agree that they caught some repeat offenders who thought they could get away with it. Who did this to real underaged children and are dangers to society, I can gladly list off the guys so you can get an idea of where I'm coming from. Lorne which is the BIGGEST idiot of them all chatted with underaged girls around Kasie's age or whatever the decoys name was. He contacted 2 other decoys and wanted to kidnap her from her family to live in maine. Thomas wiles aka hambubger molested his kids, John Kennelly went for ANOTHER kid after getting caught the first time and didn't get arrested. He got arrested after the second sting and let him free and he EXPOSED himself to 2 underaged girls in a park.

      @Stephen Hawking I think that last bit is a tad bit cruel. And they do explain the charges, some predators barely get anything except community service and probation. They explain that most of them will be charged for criminal intent for child molestation which is a felony in most parts. They have mandatory rape classes and some on the RSO for a while or in people like lorne, on the sex offender registry for life. The show enforces some predators to actually realize it and go to consuling for this urge.

    In order for the entrapment defense to work, there has to be use of coercive or overbearing tactics to commit a crime. As far as I can tell the To Catch a Predator team did not force people online to give explicit responses to someone online saying they were minors, nor did they force the person to come to a house for sexual acts with a minor. Entrapment can take various forms. Here it doesn't technically seem like entrapment but there's an issue.If you ever have to explain that your actions don't technically constitute entrapment you're already in a legal grey area.A basic rule when you have to give an explanation as to why you're not technically guilty of something you're still close to that something. To catch a predator was always about the ratings and its quite obvious in retrospect that some of their methods are probably not gonna be viewed positively by historians. Some of their methods will be criticised as evidence of how much the press was willing to bend the rules in the early XXI century.

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B Рік тому +4

      That's why laws were put on the books to make the act of that gray area illegal, the argument being if this wasn't a sting, and that was in fact a 14 year old girl who invited this guy over a sexual act would actually happen. My two issues with this were
      1) How honest are they are that the men are the ones who initiated it? I know Hansen says "there's a protocol" but unless both sides are keeping logs of the situation it is really easy for logs to be modified or deleted to make it look like the criminals were the ones who initiated it, plus the fact these are private individuals doing it not law enforcement means the level of scrutiny in what they do is lower, and most importantly
      2) this was all done for entertainment, for ratings, to make NBC money, that puts a little more question into how legit the sting was because gotta pay the bills! But more importantly how many stings couldn't work, because people backed out thinking it was a Chris Hansen special? If the argument is to get mentally ill people willing to go after kids off the street then doing anything to potentially prevent it is going the opposite way of the mission and the fact the guys who notice a camera crew and start running shows they knew about it.
