Max von Sydow throwing that kid into the shelf has remained one of my favorite scenes in any movie since I saw it in high school. The tragic nature of the scene combined with the absurdity of what I just witnessed.
What kind of a person likes to watch last house on the left . I saw it once 20 years ago and that was enough. I will give craven the respect for making a unforgettable film.
Both films have immense power in them. It's simply an elemental story, and one we can relate to. That's why both are masterfully unpleasant. Bergman hit on such true, visceral horror that even a cheap B-movie is able to be masterfully disturbing JUST by adapting it. Both films, whether you love or even hate them, are fascinating.
When he stabs the table and sits in his chair, to self proclaim his reign of vengeance and…. nothing happens. No startled burglars, awaking to their doom. Just their peaceful snores. When you play God even humility mocks you.
Thank you UA-cam for protecting me from unsafe language. By outlawing these nasty words, you help erase them (or...the knowledge of them) from the planet!
it's so fucking disgusting isn't it? we live in a society where adults are constantly monitoring other adults and telling them what they can or can't say and if you dare say a "bad word" they run to the teacher... I hate this planet
@@jimbo0896 Couldn't have said it better myself, especially the last part. The utterly boring and pathetic final days in a dystopian corporate tech/ AI/ algorithm wasteland willed into being by the drooling drone-like masses.
I really like Bergman's films but there's something about the personalities of Swedish people that I find to be really jarring and his films are like a concentrated version of that energy
@@heimdal8 You think a Xenophobe would make the distinction of loving a cultures art but admitting they find their personalities off-putting? So we just can't be honest about anything even remotely sensitive without being accused of ideological hate immediately.
@@Levipaulsen Well yes. Calling an entire population of people "off-putting" or "jarring" is a very, very harsh insult. You would probably get this if it was thrown in your face instead of you being the one dishing out the insults. Also, trying to save the situation by saying you "like the culture but not the people" just made it worse. You are free to have your opinion, of course, but don't get insulted when people don't agree with you and take offence to what you said. And don't try to hide behind the "you are all so overly sensitive"-schtick. You just insulted an entire group of people by calling us "off-putting".
@@heimdal8 It's not an insult, it's literally a fact when I watch Bergman movies, it's an experience I have. I'm not going to lie, and I'm also not going to suppress an experience I have. I love Swedish people, but their personalities can be distant and jarring. Somehow I doubt you'd react so accusatorialy if I said Americans can be obnoxious and nationalistic, which I also feel is true despite myself being one.

Very unexpected in the first viewing! Haha

Saw "Last House" but never saw "The Virgin Spring" or any Bergman film.
I'm gonna scramble to watch this now. It looks amazing!
Please do!

"autumn sonata fkn knocks me out man, it's fucking rough"
True.
For me it was Cries and Whispers, but Bergman is always interested in tearing you apart no matter which of his movies.
The Magic Flute offers a nice respite.

I haven’t seen them, but I will look for them now

@2:10 - it's not really flogging, as in weird Roman Catholic stuff, it's a birch branch used in a sauna. :)
#BillHader
They ran this on TV when I was four or five...
Brutal movie
Why censor 'rape' but not 'fucking'?

You find us jarring? Thanks, man. Xenophobia, much?

I feel much the same way. Appreciate the films but also detached about them most of the time.
Last house on the left is a horrible rip off
Messed up movie
