This guy is lying. Sabonis beat Team USA in 1988 led by David Robinson. One of the reasons Dream Team was invented. The Europeans were extremely good at this point. NBA decided to stack OLYMPIC teams with pros to counter guys like Sabonis and Nowitski, who would have destroyed college American guys.
Nowitzki was 10 in 1988;-) But you are right, Sabonis and the Lithuanian team were a big reason why the Dream Team was formed. And David Stern understood, that to make the NBA global, he needed guys like Magic, Bird and MJ to compete at the Olympics. I saw Sabas play in a youth tournament during the 80s..he was clearly the best player i had ever seen in Europe. NBA history would have been different, if he had already joined the Blazers in 86`. But thanks to the USSR, we had to wait another long 10 years..
