Arma 2 was a lot better than Arma 3. Honestly, it had more vanilla content, and the vanilla content itself was good. Almost every vehicle had a modeled interior, the simulation felt better in a lot of ways (damage model in particular.) The best part is that nobody had super crazy armor that allowed them to tank 7.62x51mm, so when you managed to actually hit someone at long range, which is really hard, it was rewarding because you got the kill 99.99% of the time. The map was better than Altis, it's a familiar post-soviet location with plenty of variety, not just open fields with tire-flattening wire fences everywhere interspersed with mud huts. Chernarus was, and still is, a beautiful place. Arma 3 didn't bring any significant engine performance improvements, so it runs about as poorly but with a bunch of needless bloat piled on top. Even the inventory system was better, you had to think carefully about what you wanted to take. You couldn't grab 3 rifles, a machine gun, an RPG, med supplies and a repair kit at once, you had to pick 1 - 2 rifles and a sidearm, and a very limited selection of extras + magazines. Your role was locked in based on the unit you picked at mission start, not everybody could be a medic or engineer. It was a real military simulator, basically just an accessible version of Virtual Battle Space. Arma 3, on the other hand, tried too hard to become a video game and lost the simulated realism that made Arma 2 great. Plus, it doesn't help that BIS jumped the shark and went with a near-future setting nobody asked for while truncating the content heavily. In comparison with DayZ standalone, DayZ mod feels way more immersive and fun. Standalone decided that tedium is "immersion" and figured that players wanted to hunt and fish inside of their PvP survival game. None of that is what made DayZ fun -- fundamentally, the best part of it was the constant excitement and danger posed by other players. Zombies and food/thirst were just ancillary mechanics designed to facilitate PvP by moving players around to loot hotzones and forcing them to make some noise every now and then. Meanwhile, in Standalone, you spend 99% of your time managing the absurdly unbalanced food and thirst meters, which require you to drink 2 liters of water every 30 minutes and 5 pounds of food every 10 minutes. But food really doesn't spawn anywhere, so you spend most of your time sifting through 100,000 enterable buildings to find a few cans of beans. That's the DZSA gameplay loop: Starve, search residential buildings in remote villages, eat, repeat. In the mod, there were very few enterable buildings, so food spawned pretty frequently. But food itself wasn't the issue, it was blood. Blood was basically your health in the mod, and normal food only allowed it to slowly regenerate. To heal replenish blood quickly you either needed blood transfusions, which required another player to administer, or you needed meat from slain animals. This was great because it not only was pretty forgiving, allowing players to focus on getting high-tier military loot and funneling them to PvP locations, but it also meant that hunting served a real purpose and made it valuable rather than merely necessary: It was an easy way to heal up during or after a fight. The way it ACTUALLY FELT was more immersive and enjoyable than DZSA's floor scrounging simulation. FEELING like you're in a post-apocalyptic wasteland is more important than actually simulating a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
the gameplay loop of DayZ mod was definitely cleaner and tighter. What mod vets were asking bohemia for was a simply improved version of the mod, primarily focusing on overcoming limitations of the ArmA II engine. Instead, they listened to the hordes of mouthbreathers clamoring for the Bestest Zombie Apocalypse Simulation ever, something we told BI they had neither the capability nor the competence to do (and we were right in the end), not to mention something that would become a chore to play. That all turned out to be an absolutely correct prediction. What's left of the failed project isn't fun, isn't interesting and isn't scary.
you are talking out of your ass. you wanna compare chernarus to Altis which has more cities larger cities with enterable buildings? And don't let me start on buggy gunplay of Arma 2.
@@davidprivate949 It's not BI's fault that the person they brought on (Rocket, the maker of the DayZ Mod) came in with assumptions that his modding experience would somehow also allow him to make major game engine adjustments. If anything DayZ should serve as a hard lesson to modders that just because you write scripts(ironically using functions written by the actual devs) that seem to work better doesn't mean they work better in the long run.
