CBT is $237M in 2024 MLB and the estimated luxury tax payroll for the M’s is $160M this season according to Fangraphs. This puts the M’s $73M under the CBT. The NYY haven’t won a WS since 2009 and yet they were constantly one of the top teams in payrolls. Spending just to spend doesn’t guarantee a World Series nor a wining season (Padres, Mets, and Angels). I don’t want the M’s to become Padre version of 2023 where the Padres had to take a loan to cover payroll. RSN disaster is looming issue for both clubs.
