Kirk Douglas always was in excellent physical condition, however his internal strength helped him live another 24 years after his stroke to the age of 103. RIP Kirk, God speed.
Just heard that Kirk Douglas has died at the age of 103. God rest his soul. He will be missed. I await your reply. I understand that "Spartacus", was Kirk Douglas personal favorite film.
They implemented this training at my local gym. In the end they stopped it. I think they realised if the customers are dead they can't pay their gym fees.
@@klyntarkenny8046 nope I think it was because you could move quicker with it vs a huge shield would tire you out an leave you vulnerable. Smaller shield can move more quickly.
One of the best films ever. Shame to hear of Kirk Douglas's passing. I grew up watching this movie and it always left a mark on me every time I watched it. One of my favourite movies of all time, they don't make them like this now only "Gladiator" was a close second to the spectacle of this production. I've see many adaptations of Spartacus, but this one is the most powerful and stands the test of time.
Apparently in 1958 Kirk Douglas wanted the role of Judah Ben Hur in the movie Ben-Hur. MGM turned him down in favor of Charlton Heston but offered him the role of the Roman centurion Messala. Kirk was so mad, he decided to film and star in his own sword-and-sandal of Spartacus. We should be happy that he did.
Love this movie! One of the greatest films ever made! Amazing and large. The battle scenes, the plot, the whole thing. Top notch. I mean, it’s Kirk Douglas cmon!
I love this scene and I love that is it shows how gladiator training was so hard and so brutal but the best part of it was how Spartacus couldn't keep his eyes of the beautiful Varenia and it was love at first sight for the both of them.
I do find it kind of funny how they imagined a gladiator holding cell to look EXACTLY like a modern prison yard. It's even got precious metals being used for booked fences and everything.
R.I.P. Kirk I am so happy you were part of daddy’s childhood and my childhood and your son Michael was also a colourful part of my childhood all the movies with you or your son were in are still the best entertainment a life well lived!
what's funny is that when this movie came out people were like "god those gladiators trained like machins"....after watching spartacus: blood and sand, people say " by jupiter's cock those ones will never get to the primus"
True, true. The more recent Starz production is superior in many ways, though the gratuitous blood and gore is a bit much in places, by Jupiter's cock ;)
The starz makes this one look like a tom and jerry episode, and you know what if i watched this back when it came out i would still think it is an tom and jerry episode so bad.
I love this movie but after I watched Spartacus blood and sand, it ruined this movie for me when I watched it straight after.the series lol. I can watch this movie and thoroughly enjoy it again thank God 😂😆 it took awhile lol but this movie is fantastic again
It's always fun seeing historic films that were produced in different decades because you start to notice the little anachronisms more. Like in this most of the gladiators seem to have 60s style clipped back and sides with side parting.
Spartacus fired my imagination as a ten year old, at 17 I read the novel by Haoward Fast. The book of course was much better than the movie. Kirk Douglas did an incredible job and deserved an Oscar. I don't blame him for having that as his favorite. RIP
Douglas was such a HUMANIST too: In 1955, he established Bryna Productions, which began producing films as varied as Paths of Glory (1957) and Spartacus (1960). In those two films, he collaborated with the then-relatively-unknown director Stanley Kubrick, taking lead roles in both films. Douglas has been praised for helping to break the Hollywood blacklist by having Dalton Trumbo write Spartacus with an official on-screen credit.
Probably the reason he lived to be 103 is the great shape he kept himself in. I thought he was younger, but when this movie was released, he was 43 years old. My God, look at the shape he was in to play a gladiator and do what he did in this movie at 43.

Fairly accurate depiction of a gladiator's life and training. They do leave out those who volunteered to become gladiators, and were treated better than the slaves.
Most of them were based off of gladiator training equipment. They used wooden swords that weighed more than a regular gladius, however, those weren't rounded pegs. The device at the beginning where Spartacus was practicing strikes was based off a palus. A palus was just a wooden beam that gladiators would practice their strikes on. Ludii would have other resistance equipment in order to build up and maintain their gladiators.
I think they only got it wrong regarding the damage against the opponent. Gladiatorial fights were usually more like a bloody WWE, as it was expected of the gladiators to draw blood, but not to actually kill or dismember the other guy, slaves were expensive, and training a slave to become a gladiator even more. Death matches were the exception and only happened on special occasions and festivals, and were usually the "main card" fight
@@AndreLuis-gw5ox that's right. 9/10 fights ended with both combatants alive. Gladiators were a substantial investment and sponsors had to pay the lanistas the costs for any gladiators killed in a match.
the colored zones are absolutely good pieces of advice! crippling blows are done first, so you can decide the pace of the fight. slow kills are less than ideal than guaranteed kill

In the Howard Fast novel "Spartacus," the gladiators are given women because as the trainer said: "A man's no good if his 'parts' dry up."
