Bipolar Disorder and Social Security Disability in 2017

  • What does it take to win Social Security disability benefits if you are struggling with bi-polar disorder? As I discuss in this video, bi-polar disorder is an overused diagnosis, often given by family doctors who do not have specialized training in mental illness.
    Social Security disability judges see references to bipolar disorder frequently and they are less likely to approve claims that do not contain evidence of a severe degree of impairment. However you can still win if your file contains the right kind of documentation.
    More specifically, judges expect to see extensive treatment records covering a long period of time from both psychiatrists and psychologists. They expect to see evidence of unsuccessful mediation management and they expect non-medical evidence in the form of statements from former co-workers or supervisors, and evidence of actual problems you have had trying to work.

      get a good counselor and health coach, can make a huge difference especially with those that have gut and allergy issues that run in the family, not necessarily you with those symptoms, they seem to have a link and good lifestyle with support helps medication work better.

    @4:40 Here is the catch 22 my own daughter is facing. "They" want you to see a doctor, pay for medications, and have sessions with a psychologist. OK, sounds simply enough. Who is going to pay for it all? No one is going to see you for free, provide you free medication, nor provide you with free counseling. If you can not maintain employment, how do you even pay rent much less see a doctor? Catch 22. Everything described in this video fits my daughter. We had to fly her (age 25) back from a California mental hospital (2018 involuntary commitment after cutting her arms repeatedly) to NC and pay for her psychiatrist visits out of our own pocket at $400.00 per visit. We had to add her back to our own insurance for 2019 just so we could afford to continue seeing a psychiatrist at an insurance rate. This will expire at the end of 2019 as she will age out in Jan 2020. That means we will have to pay her 2020 medical premiums in order to keep seeing a psychiatrist. In the meantime, SS has denied her benefits and tells her to get a job. We go to Rehabilitative Services and they do a mental health evaluation and tell her that she is not suited for employment due to her mental condition but encourages her to keep seeking medical help. SS evaluators are soulless individuals. If not for her own parents, she would be one of those homeless people wandering the streets of San Francisco. Where does it end???????????????????????????????????

    I won my case several years ago, I have bipolar disorder, was a registered nurse for 15 years, started missing work, 2 suicide attempts which both landed me in ICU, have been seeing a psychiatrist and therapist monthly, as well as group therapy, take several pychotropic meds, and have had 12 inpatient psych hospitalizations, I really didn't want to apply for disability but my case worker kinda talked me into it, I thought I could maybe still work, but that's the impairment talking, my doctor still won't recommend me going back to work

    I think a lot of bipolar medications are just as disabling as the condition itself. I take seroquel and lithium. It makes it impossible to focus and concentrate. Between all the medication side effects and the mania and depression it’s extremely difficult to hold a good job

    Everything this man explained about Bi-Polar disorder is all me. I am on SSI Disability, but my Medicare part B has been cut off. Now I can't get my medication. I need help. I can't keep my focus, and can't work a job. I am estranged from my kids and family. I do get $1495 a month, but even that is tough to live on monthly because of the cost of living. I did go to Colorado for a little while and lived in the wilderness to get away from everyone in society, but I need my medication.

      Seek your local mental health associate. Google the state you live in and put mental health medication help. If you have a mental disability in your mind you can not cure it by going to the woods. Do a little research.

    I've had bi polar disorder since 2002 (8 years old). Diagnosed by a physcatrist at age 8 with add/adhd/bi polar 2. I'm currently 22 years old already have my case started. I have ssi but 500$ isnt enough for me to live on so I need ssdi. I've got extensive treatment history from 2002 to 2009. I've been bakeracted 3 times. Two in last 12 months for suicidal attempts. Last time I was also now diagnosed with schitzoeffective disorder and ptsd.
    I have extensive medical and school records. I've tried pretty much every medication available and nothing works besides marijuana. I got my first job when I was 18, quit within 3 months because of serve aniexty and pressure/panic attacks. Dealing with people on a basic level is very hard for me. I got another job after that lasted for almost 3 years but that was hell. The same stuff happened but I tried coping with it but it affected me greatly until I had my mental bbreakdown. Every day actions such as talking to customers or my co workers or bosses brought on serve boughts of aniexty and depression. My co workers and bosses know there's something mentally wrong with me. I'm appealing my case for ssdi because I was denied and got ssi instead but now I'm continuing on. What could I do to help my chances? Any advice.

    When we show up to our Hearing with the judge. Should we go how we normally look throughout the day, like a mess, unshaven, etc? Or should we get a haircut and wear a suit and tie?

    I was diagnosed by a psychiatric doctor in the hospital and given medication plan then it was continued by my family doctor because therapist appointment were too expensive and I have no job. I was seen by a family doctor and tried multiple medications before suicidal depression and admitted to a hospital.

    I have been seeing a therapist and psychiatrist for 10 years. I’ve seen 4 or 5 therapists and 2 psychiatrists- and had an iep in school. I have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, adhd, Autism, executive functioning disorder, and migraines. Over the years I have tried 30+ meds and have been hospitalized twice, but that was maybe 8 years ago. I’m 23 and have had my meds be stable and I have been working for 20 hours a week. I feel this is my limit, can I get disability for not working full time? I only make minimum wage so it’s not enough for me to live, but I want to keep my job and don’t want to have to quit it to be eligible.

    My school sent me to a community services place in 8th grade and I was diagnosed then. My family wasn't supportive on that topic and I've just failed at everything I've tried including several attempts at a college degree beginning when my class hadn't even graduated highschool yet. I've tried meds throughout the years w no help so I don't use any now but am about to try ketamine therapy. I even have a family business that was started specifically so I could take it over that I can't do more than a short stent working at. My question is about consistently being treated. I haven't been treated in years at this point, although I am about to begin this new therapy I mentioned and am going to start going back to a community counselor or psychiatrist if I can talk my mom into paying for the latter (no insurance) and she just agreed to pay for this extremely expensive therapy. If I can't afford the psychiatrist, will the free clinic counselor do esp given my almost 20 yr history beginning at 13. My diagnosis is absolutely undeniable, but I know it's about proving it to a judge and I've always heard how hard it is and also not wanted to admit I can't care for myself. Also have a 13yo son and it makes me rely on others for daily schedule things and to help buy his Xmas, etc and I feel it's time I do what I can to at least be less of a financial burden on anyone who will help and be able to better provider for my son. Thanks so much for your video and hopefully a reply :)

    I had a severe case diagnosed at 14. Been suppressed medically til 2001 then discontinue meds. And 2018 had a death in immediate family 1st birn son ODd. Ended in the hospital 1 month later with an enlarged heart. Bow just over a year and my bo symptoms are back with a vengeance and along with intermittent so called blackouts where I lose time and end up in odd places. Like the woods, in restaurants sitting in fetal position under a table, standing in a mall for hours in one place to name a few. I have been unable to return to my former work of 11 years. But not sick in bed and indo have parts of some days I am fully functioning. But when im.nuts I'm nuts and its scary. I may have other underlying issues now too so waiting for diagnosis with all this Covid. What's ur take on this and should I just push for unemployment and hope to find a different employment or is the risk too high and I should just naturally get the documentation and at least apply for disability. And hope I score a treatment before approval...

    • @ssdattorney
      @ssdattorney  4 роки тому +3

      There has always been a tension between disability and unemployment. When you file for unemployment you are saying that you are ready, willing and able to work, whereas when you file disability you are saying that you are unable to work even a simple job. My feeling is that if you can work, you should, and if you can't be reliable at a simple job that's when to look at the disability option.

    • @onlyme8870
      @onlyme8870 4 роки тому

      I am naturally a worker just the mind is not stable and bo keeps going way to high creating the severity headaches that shut me down. Nothing at the moment is permanent in my opinion just the symptoms disable you until true diagnosis and treatment or suppression or remedy. Thx for the straight answer it's what I was asking for.
