You know, I used to be pro-duracell coppertops, never used to have any issues with them at all.
Then a few years back, nothing but problems with them.
I've now switched to Energizer Max / Energizer Max Plus, and the Energizer Lithium batteries.

Did I seen correctly - You tried to measure Riso of cable 300/300V with test voltage of 2500V? You shouldnt use more than 500V.

You will burn the insulation if you use unreasonably high voltage.
During testing, it is inappropriate to develop minor defects that do not affect normal operation into dangerous ones, which, reducing the electrical strength, may appear during operation.

NZS/AS3000 has some specifications to be met by insulation testers so it would be useful to know if that meter actually complies. Some do not so are useless for compliance testing. On the 500 vdc range the meter should maintain the nominal open circuit voltage within +20% and -10% across a 1M ohm test resistor and similarly on the 1000 vdc range maintain the nominal open circuit voltage with a 10 megohm test resistor.

@@TheDefpom There are potentially more issues with this meter. The supplied leads appear to be just regular multimeter leads probably claimed to be good for 1000 volts so completely unfit for purpose as a 2.5 kV insulation tester. Also, the regulatory requirement in NZ and Au and probably many other counties is for the insulation resistance to be 1 M ohm or higher for regular 230/400 volt installations. As you showed, this meter appears incapable of displaying down to 1 M ohm. There is a good reason why proper insulation testers from reputable brands like Megger, AVO, Fluke etc are far more expensive - they pay attention to guaranteeing to meet international standards and assuring safety.

I don't understand, the probes that came with the meter are rated at 1,000 volts. Should they have a higher rating than the tester's output?
Glad you are slowly getting better. 🍻

The guaranteed insulation breakdown voltage of each probe is greater than 1000V. When measuring the insulation resistance of an electrical installation, the probe wires should be placed so that they do not touch each other, the equipment body or a person. In this case, I think everything will be fine.

The leads are rated for 1000V at 10 Amps, these output upto 2,500V at far below 10 Amps, around 3mA typically.

The E&V Bakelite Megger will still be working when the Aneng has long since failed and gone out with the trash. I was lucky enough to find a Bakelite Evershed & Vignoles Megger in pristine condition, really well looked after, even the leather case is like new. Paid around £30 on eBay but worth every penny. In rougher condition you can sometimes get one for around 15-20.
