Interesting that they jumped back in time. My daily driver is a 1985 Xtracab. They also made the right move by making the manual available for lower models and not top models, that was backwards for a while. Missed an opportunity to make the Sport an Xrunner though.
I wish there was a two door model of every vehicle available, most people never carry anyone in the back seat and you could save cost, weight, and complexity with a two door model. My philosophy is, if you want to ride with me and the back seat is all that is available then you make the effort to access it, most vehicles that are two doors have a front passenger seat that moves forward and folds forward easily for you to climb into the back. Only exception would be for parents with baby seats, then the four door does make sense.
Sad that the access cab was removed. The utility package of the sr basically had all the same advantages but had operable rear doors. I like my access cab with the rear seats. I do occasionally carry extra people and for short trips it gets a butt in the seat, when I don’t need the seats I fold them up and I can throw stuff back there. It’s great and gets me the 6 foot bed. Sad the only way you can carry 4 people now is with the 4 door models.

Great looking design, minus the stupid air damn up front. Love the 2 door configuration. Albeit, they should have given the option to open the rear cab with a door. No seats, just cargo door access. Hate that there is no 4x4 and no V6 option. That rear locker is probably only good in low gear, thus not going to be any kind of drag stripping feature to lay rubber down from both tires. Sorry GM i have no need for a crew cab long box Sierra when a long box Canyon would do everything i need it to do, $20k more for what? The potential of hauling more then i actually haul?
I have always liked prerunners because they are designed for high-speed, off-roading, not slow rock crawling. I grew up with a 2wd farm truck, and my dad worked in the summer building roads. He put mud terrain tires on the back and street (highway) tires on the front. I watched him drive through deep mud in that truck, and he kept a set of tire chains behind the seat. When I was a kid, all 4x4 guys carried tire chains. I live in Canada, and it gets down to minus 45 degrees Celsius in the winter, and we have deep snow. My daily driver for the past 10 years was a 2wd Sonoma extended cab, long box with a factory rear locker. I recently replaced it with a 2wd Canyon extended cab, with a long box, and want to get a Baja Suspension for it. The Baja A-arms are longer, and you can mount 2 shocks on each A-arm. People talk about 2wd trucks like they are useless or obsolete. You can drive a 2wd in the snow just fine, but you have to have the right tires, drive according to weather conditions, and you need to know how to drive in snow. You can't just spin your tires because driving in snow is different than driving in mud. I do get stuck in the winter, but I carry a short steel shovel and tire chains and can get myself unstuck with a little digging. FYI - 4x4s get stuck, too. I believe that having a 4-wheel drive makes some drivers reckless because they believe their vehicle is unstoppable.
Honestly. This and no 4x4 for that option ensures it dies fairly quickly. It’s like Toyota said “They want a short cab long bed? Ha. Alright. Let’s give em that and make it as undesirable as possible so we can take it off the books as an option in 2025 when they don’t sell and nobody wants them.”
Looks Interesting . Is there just one engine option? Would rather not have a turbo. $$$$ to Repair later down the road. Looks like it will do well, Good looking Truck.
Going from the convenience of suicide doors ala Access Cab back to the XtraCab is a curious choice, but it has to be in the name of cost savings and maybe crash safety. I once dreamed of owning a Prerunner and ended up with a 2002 TRD SR-5 XtraCab V6 in Super White. It quickly became a letdown thanks to the famously awful seating position and a clunky transmission, but I loved the locker and good suspension. There's still part of me that wants one of these to relive my youth.

like... like it, if it was 4x4 trd off road , id buy one 6' box ,no need for a roof top tent ,just add a topper or camper shell and ones ready for camping /overland adventures
I think they failed with the xtracab prerunner. It should have been an access cab with the storage options as reaching over the seat all the time to reach something in the back is a PITA. Hell there is even a video of the chief engineer having trouble to reach something in the back. Also the rear suspension was a mistake with the leaf springs being under the axel as that limits the lift options and will probably only be used to lower the truck like what other people did with the Nissan hardbody RWD. The prerunner with be terrible for off roading. They can say that they moved to xtracab for crash tests, but I bet it is to save cost and the MSRP will still be more expensive than previous years for the prerunner. Also they should have left the push start as an option. If I ever do get a 4th gen I will probably get a crew cab and delete the back seats to get what I wanted out of the prerunner.

WHY did they not offer this configuration in 4WD?! The 4WD Tacoma has too long of a wheelbase, and too much glitz and electronic fubar to be a cult off-roader. The Tacoma platform dies in 2024.
The loss of the rear access doors ruins it. What a PITB it's going to be to have to reach over the seats every time to access anything. And then if you make a mess trying to get it out, what a disaster you'd have to deal with to clean it up with things probably ending up under the seats! What was Toyota thinking. No thank you. EDIT: Just want to add one more thing to this comment. The lack of easy access to the back of the Extra Cab is going to cause sales of that cab configuration to plummet and many will end up getting traded in as well as new owners realize how difficult that area is to access now. Toyota will take this as a "lack of interest" for this type of cab and simply delete it from the lineup. They will not accept responsibility for their mistake by adding doors to it in a future update. They will simply remove it due to lack of sales and move on. I hope I'm wrong. But I've seen this sort of thing happen far too many times with the auto industry in my lifetime. This is really sad because a lot of people have loved the Access Cab for it's 6' bed and useable space behind the seats for things you want to keep safe and out of the weather. But I really think this signifies the beginning of the end of the Access/King Cab. So sad.

The front air dam is removed with 9 bolts. I like that Toyota removed the nearly-unusable rear jump seats, making the area more functional for cargo-only (especially with the locking compartments). We're lucky to still have the option of an ExtraCab model, with other carmakers eliminating that choice. I wish it was one of the trims offering the manual trans, but I could live with a good 8-speed auto.

Notice the rear bumper. I guess they re thought the one piece bumper thing.
WHY did they not offer this configuration in 4WD?! The 4WD Tacoma has too long of a wheelbase, and too much glitz and electronic fubar to be a cult off-roader. The Tacoma platform dies in 2024.
Frontier still has long bed
A Trail Hunter Xtracab would be on my list.
One day I will need to replace my ‘85 Pickup Xtracab.
Once it finally wears out anyway! Lol!
They need to offer this with the hybrid setup with the trailhunter option. This thing will sell like hot cup cake!
So sad.
I don't understand why this truck will have leaf springs in the rear and they aren't offering it with a manual transmission.
This truck is fantastic! But if there are no rear doors, that passenger seat needs to fold down AAANNND flip forward! Please Toyota
That's to bad 😢 that this truck did not come with a 4 wheel drive Option package That truck would be a nice simple Without all the Bells and Whistles truck
Awesome to see Toyota offering a vast variety of options while including standard safety tech and cruise control. Who would have thought... 😏
I had a 2000 toyota coup that had a 2.2L. It didnt have 465 lbft of torque but they musy be squeezing that little battery and motor for all its got in this big truck to het that man
The PreRunner looks awesome! I’m so glad they are still offering an access cab with a standard rear seat delete - just space.
Screw your Access Cab I like my 2002 regular cab the new frame in the new shackles Nation high in the back and go the front tickets eyes but not that big only weighs 2700 pounds without you any later generation Toyota or a l l s h i t
Mabe the Toyota people held back a model with a front locker !!!??? Doubtful …..lol
Oh Me likey xtra cab tacos. That should have decent performance and fuel economy too.
I am not happy with new toyota Tacoma . The front bumper nearly goes to the ground on all models . First time I go to minnesota on the forest roads that going be rip offed . I never understand why make a truck without 4 wheel drive that take fun out of it
It was called accessory cab in 2013 not a double cab I bought the 2013 version
The pre runner is one of the worst ideas for a trim next to the trd sport. It’s such a small difference in price for a huge difference in re-sale. And the towing and gas mileage difference has historically been almost completely the same
2WD Gross lol
Can’t beat Toyota 👍👍
I hope other manufacturers see this and do similar deletes of their back seats.
so you can only get a 2 door with 2 wheel drive, no 4 wheel. if you want 4 doors just buy a 4 runner.
Nothing gets my caveman blood flowing like storage.
I like it already
Sounds like somebody's gonna trade in their Colorado.
Great video! Thanks. Soooo.....Toyota....where is the trim that could compete against the Ford Maverick??? I love Toyota' vehicles but it seems that they are not paying attention to what the consumers are asking for...we need a 4-5 seater cheap Toyota pickup so we don't have go buy Ford Mavericks...please Toyota!!!!
Stand by....rumor is Toyota has a whole new truck just to compete with the Maverick.
Is there any way to get this door configuration with 4x4??
Andre, get out tour tape measure for a air dam comparison. Gm vs Toyota
With that chin spoiler they should’ve named it the Amish taco 😂
Love it! I hope they move the Hazards to the left tho, closer to driver.
Already know Ford and Chevy stink.
Toyota should bring back the X runner
Cool that the passenger seat folds flat. It would be great if you could fold forward towards the dashboard. Make more room for back
The front air dam is removed with 9 bolts.
I had a 2002 Tacoma Pre-Runner Double cab TRD w/ V-6 that I bought new. Best vehicle I've ever owned. It had a locking rear diff and that got me out of most situations I was going to get into. Sold it to my nephew with 275K miles and he just turned over 300K. Never used any oil between changes.
Prerunner Hilux is available in Asian markets...i have a 2022 version in white don't need 4WD here but otherwise identical less front diff and cvs!
Finally, a truck I can get behind.
NEW TACOMA IS THE CLASS LEADER WITH NO PROBLEM .❤👑👑❤. OBVIOUSLY Naveenthemachine WILL POST HIS DUMB COMMENTS .😂😂
When will we know pricing and mpg?
Honestly I prefer leaf spring over coil.
