Researching for my first potential cruise. And I agree, this is a silly little interaction to give a smile to an unknown stranger, hoping for nothing in return, except possibly finding a smile left by another. We could all use a little more childlike joy in just giving someone a smile!

I went in my first cruise last year and didn't know about the ducks until right before we left. We then found about 6, even when we weren't looking and it absolutely made us smile! So much so that I have 65 ducks ready to go with us on our 2nd cruise in 3 weeks! It's such a great piece of joy for kids and adults alike!

I bring about 2 dozen ducks with us when we cruise.
Can't hardly get them placed and the crew snags them up. Set one on the bar, crew instantly grabbed it and yelled "Who's got the ducks* bartending staff went crazy as I tossed ducks to them.....word got out I had ducks and got free drinks the rest of the cruise.
Personally handed one to the Captain who had his wife with him. She took it from him and invited the wife and I to their table...
    Do not underestimate The Duck!
We have labels made up with Cruise, ship, date of cruise and our names on them. Then attch the lable with rubber bands around rhe ducks neck.
CruiseTip: You can never take too many ducks.

My wife bought some ducks for our cruise in February, on the Oasis of the Seas, and she hid 5 or 6 of them, and was so happy when she found one (which she kept, I think). We had joined a FB group for our cruise and people were posting a bunch of cruise duck pictures on there during the cruise.

Great Lucy. As former international flight attendant, we would leave general notes, usually in a log book in a crew lounge. Every international hotel that took crew had lounges where we could check in our rooms, have coffee or internet, or meet friends for an evening dinner out. For security reasons, we always stayed at many very "posh" and fancy high-end hotels. These lounges kept us out of the common guest areas and provided the items and services. They often would have a concierge to book theatre tickets or dinners at restaurants, just lots of things. For several years a parent who had a child in elementary school would bring a book for the crew to sign the give it to us to pass around. We could see everywhere in the world the book traveled and the dates. There was always a note in the back with the childs name and address and the date they requested someone try to mail it back to them, say after six months. It was good fun for the youngsters and fun for the crew because we, too, could see where in the world and on which airline the book had traveled.

Oh my god this is so funny I actually collect rubber jacks for completely unrelated reason, when I was a child my mom and I used to go to a rubber ducky race so now it’s a sentimental thing for me. But I’ve seen the rubber duck shop in other UA-camrs videos and I thought the same thing because I didn’t know about the rubber ducks on the cruise ships I literally thought why would they open a shop of just rubber ducks they can’t sell enough rubber ducks to stay in business 😂 thanks for the heads up on all this when I finally get to go on a cruise I’m definitely bringing ducks! I’m going to be on the lookout for the most interesting ducks I could find between now and then!

    Lucy,
Thanks for a fun video! 😀 🦆 (something I really needed after this past week)
I've never heard of Cruising Ducks either (but, then I've never been on a cruise ship).
    🦆🦆🦆 I can just see it now....little Cruising-as-Crew Ducks "paddling" around from ship-to-ship. 🦆🦆🦆
(once you find the one, or ones, that you like....maybe you could even sell 'em as Cruising-as-Crew Merch, for all your viewers to spread around)
Ya' know, with the Bimini Crew Tour, Captain Giovanni interview, (and your sharing of your "up's" and "down's"), and now this fun video....wow, you've started this contract out with some fantastic productions!
    Keep up the wonderful work!
But, don't forget to "take 5" once-in-a-while (maybe even have a glass of red). 😀

When I was in college 1982 I found a message in a bottle on Miami Beach. It had a message. Long/Lat date and a name/add/address in West Germany. It was tossed in the Sea off a cruise ship in NE Canada. Took a year. And circled the whole north Atlantic. We wrote the people and got the story.

I found one, brought to my then 7yr old niece for her to open and it turned out to be a note to dead person. Like they went to ocean to drink to their dearly departed and then wrote them a goodbye letter and put it in the wine bottle. Awkward to try to explain to a kid. Needless to say we took it back to same beach and put it back in the water. I no longer open the messages in a bottle. Your experience was far better than ours.

@@bizburgess1947 for sure, but awesome, never met anyone else who has found the fable bottle. The one I found had a screw cap that was so corroded that we ended up having to break the bottle to get to the note. Would have loved to have been able to keep it together. Was learning German in college at the time. Was able to decipher the letter. The name and address ended up being the granddaughter, a teenager at the time of the people who dropped it off the ship. We sent our letter to her both in english and German. She was much better at English than my German. For the letter that was returned. She was quite surprised her grandparents never told her about it and had forgotten about it themselves till they got our letter.

My wife bought them from party shops and Amazon. We got some rather nice ones, including St. Paddy's Day ducks (we cruised on the Anthem of the Seas during St. Patrick's Day), and even a small box of tiny ducks, which we hid without labels because they were too small.
My wife probably had the most fun just hiding them. We were looking for them everywhere. I even overheard a little girl saying she just found her first duck on day 5 of a 7 day cruise, so I surreptitiously pointed her mother to a duck that my daughter just hid. It was wonderful to see the joy on the little girl's face when she found her second duck in just a couple of minutes.

Hi, was on a the Carnival Miracle to Alaska in September of 22 when we found our first duck. Then we started paying attention to the nooks and crannies in the public areas and found several more. Was cruising on RCL Enchantment in December of 22 and found one. I usually write down the information from the duck and re-hide them for others to find.
Looking for ducks? They can turn up just about anywhere but places like plant bed and pots, window sills, the ledges of pillars in public areas. They are sometimes just above or below where your normal gaze falls. I have never seen/found one in a location that would put you at risk when you attempt to retrieve it...meaning, they will be found in locations that where they can be casually and inconspicuously hidden. Happy Duck hunting!

There's a rubber duck shop in Dubrovnik, Croatia which is a popular cruise port. But I feel like I've also seen them in London.
I knew of the trend to hide ducks on cruises, but I still found it strange that a business would open only selling them, so I think there may be other trends to collect them other than just cruising.
I've been on 4 cruises in the last year and I've only seen one duck so far, but I'd like to hide some on my next cruise on P&O Iona in May or on Brilliant Lady in January.

Theres a lady that 3D printed a whole bunch of octopus and put them all over Valiant Lady when we were on it! (december '22) I think hiding octopus is going to be a virgin thing now as well lol

I saw a girl set one back in February, I had no idea what she was doing. I picked it up, was confused, so I left it, lol. Hopefully someone in-the-know found it.
