    4:12 "I hope he's not poisoning you."
Maomao: "I hope he is... Mmm tasty poison."

It’s cool that the women in this show stuck together to help each other … both Mao Mao and Lady Gyokuyou keeping quiet so that Lady Fuyou could find her happiness. At the end of the day, that’s all they can do in this society of absolute rule. We should be glad we are living in more civilized times. ^_^

Lol I love Faroh's thought logic sometimes because it's so different than my own that it makes watching her reactions so interesting and funny at the same time.

6:32 "Xiao" can mean "Little" or "Young" in chinese so in this case he is calling MaoMao either "Little Cat" or "Young Cat"

Marriage was a business deal for nobility (Peasants too sometimes) throughout history. Which is why most of them had affairs outside marriage. But still being with someone you don't care about or maybe even hate, having children with them and living your life like that till death is really awful. Even now in some countries they still marry off children for benefits and prestige.

8:46 “Why, what does that mean?” My speculation is that first of all, she may be shuddering at the thought of the women just being used as possessions that can be given to anyone, and second, you Lady Fuyou’s standing in the world is dropping from “Emperor’s concubine” to a “military officer’s wife.” So it’s a huge drop in social status.

Right! And that “drop in social status” and “value” makes her able to be “affordable” so her true lover can “buy her back”. Cuz if that drop in “value” didn’t happen, he may not be able to “afford her”! It’s all messed up, objectifying women, but it is something that those people back then had to do if they wanted to be together.

It certainly is gross - it's often simply sexual slavery, what is comes down to. So your reaction is completely valid imo. But it's really beautiful and that this couple found their way around these terrible conditions.

8:45 why ? eventhough i'm male though, but I can still know what those girls feeling. It's like, I'd rather be f by the emperor and live ihis luxurious life in the rear palace rather than given away to a military officer to be his f toy. I know the ending, just that if we're talking about how those girls feeling at those moment. that's all.

Its not like all of them are being sold off. Thats not a brothel after all. Most concubines are here on their own cause its a great honor to be the emperors concubine. Also the families of the concubines are getting huge favors from the emperor. You could hear about that at the beginning of the episode 1:35. And of course their kid can become the next emperor. So if your son becomes the next emperor you would want that as a concubine. So as a concubine you are getting a lot out of this arrangement.

I don't want to start a big discussion since Faroh is still watching the show, but the way you are presenting it I find a bit rose-colored and goes also against how the show unfolds its themes. Yes, there is great honor in being a high class concubine, but even this episode shows how brutal this system of social control is. The episode ends in a bittersweet way, because the resolution is a scam - an intentional circumvention of strict social order through tricks and Gyokuyou envies them. Even if you're privileged in this system, you're still severely trapped in it.

@@artisinventable maomao said it after all, the inner palace is similar to the brothels. It's a gilded cage.

And you are still better off than a beggar on the streets. They are still pretty privileged. Thats a fact.

@@teongreen5254 I wasn't even arguing that beggars have it better or something like that - what's even the point here? Mostly everybody in every society is still privileged in comparison to people worse off. I think thinking only in terms of comparative privilege exhausts itself pretty fast - narrative fiction doesn't have to be that flat. And again I think Apothecary Diaries walks the line between the romanticization and the fundamental injustice of courtly life quite well (for an anime especially).
