Just tremendous. I wasn't looking forward to trying to put in spikes, and this actually works well enough, and it costs nothing. Thank you for posting this.
I had just ordered a 5th string capo from Amazon 5 minutes before seeing this video. I immediately cancelled the order and will pop on over to the nearest dollar store for a Bic pen. Perfect! You just saved me $30.
Thanks!! I was a bluegrass banjo player 30 yrs ago & had to have a special capo installed. Now I've got me a banjo again & I'm not playing any concerts so I'd rather just find a DIY solution. I'll try yours!!
Thank you so much for sharing this video. Popped into a music store today to see how much this little capo would cost for the 5th string. I was told they Start at 60.00, which is Insane. I'm sure I can find a bic cap lid around here and if not a bic pen is cheap to purchase to get the cap, lol.
Just one more suggestion for your incredibly great hack. I sliced the back of the ring part once. So now it will clip on to one of the brackets when not in use. Keeps it handy and prevents loss. Thanks for this super great capo!
Just done it! Awesome. I've only just bought a Shubb capo for the 4 strings for £20, but the idea of spending another £50 or so just to capo the 5th string?! Making it £70 in total?! Nuts. Thanks to this I'll never look at a Bic biro pen lid in the same way again! Thank you Bic and thank you Shaun for saving me a ludicrous amount of money! :)
It's a simple great solution! I bought my banjo seven years ago and while I was waiting to install my three railroad spikes I tried this... Now I still play my instrument with the bic cap!
Thanks for this idea I play 6 string banjo however If you put a high D on the 6 string it sounds more like a 5 string. I have seen some players put Nashville high strung strings on with improves the sound even more some use Dadgad tuning and put rail road spiks in the neck but your idea will let me experiment without acting the spikes.🤩👍
This is the BEST thing I have ever seen! I've been looking (for years) for something that does not require drilling. And it's within my price range, LOL. Thank you so much! Now I will be tearing the house apart looking for a pen cap.
Thanks for showing me that. My old banjo teacher told me about it but I didn't get it. I'm one of those that needs to see it to understand. Thanks tons!!!!
I use a self tapping screw tucked under the fifth string (between fretboard and string)the threads keep it from slipping and you can store it slipped under 1st 2nd 3rd on the head stock, even screw it under on its side.Find the right size by trial.place the head facing down to clear the fourth, twist to adjust.
thank you so much! i recently decided to convert an acoustic guitar to a banjo and wanted the 5th string. With this idea I will be able to do what I need even If I have to modify it somehow for my guitar. Good stuff man!
Just made one - well, 3 actually. Absolutely brilliant. Not so effective as you move further up the neck but I think that's to do with the banjo's action which, in my case, isn't very good.
Dude...this looks GREAT...but I can't see it swell enough to know what you're doing !!!!!!! I'll watch it again...or could you post it again...UP CLOSE...with MORE LIGHT ?

Much thanks from across the pond.
Sheer genius. The simplest solutions really are the best. I hated the idea of putting holes in my banjo. Cheers mate.
Lol brilliant mate👏👏👏
Thanks for the helpful, and frugal tip, much appreciated. Happy New Year to you too!
Thanks for the tip - that's so quick and simple to do!
Thanks for showing me that. My old banjo teacher told me about it but I didn't get it. I'm one of those that needs to see it to understand. Thanks tons!!!!

Good one Shaun!!! Got to try that one out.
Nice one! 😃
That’s a great trick. I tie mine off to a string on my strap so not to lose it.
This is such a smart idea! 5th string capos can get quite pricey.
BRILLIANT thank you for posting
Great tip, cheers for the instruction!
Great tip, thanks for posting.
Only took me 20 minutes to find a cap to a Bic pen. Now, if I just don't lose it while look for that hacksaw!
Sound my friend .

Wait, how did you attach it to the banjo?
You rest it under the string where you cut the groove in the stick part look how your banjo is sitting on the peg on the 5th string it's the same idea
thank you great idea and CHEAP!!!
Thanks sir !
Genius
