The additions are vitamins B2-B12 . With very few being “ preservatives” to keep the potatoes and meat fresh during shipping across the country. Just because you see a scary chemical formula name doesn’t mean it’s something the human body can’t quickly flush from your system or need in the case of vitamins… Europe can get away with not needing the preservatives because the distances shipping the products are not so great that they would spoil quickly without them.

@@emanymton713 from where in all those ingredients did you get vitamins?
Perhaps very few are preservatives, but they point still stands, some of the ingredients if you could even call them that, are illegal in the EU, not because of distance, but because they shouldn't be in food in the first place! Those are tested as bad for the body or in some cases are banned because of safety, as in unsure what it does to the body.

If you buy more plant based options from the companies that produce both plant and animal products, they will start adding more variants of that and make more people interested in trying one of them, which can lead some people to considering switching to plant based diet, which is good for the animals. But its still a lazy solution to eat at Mcdo, no matter what you eat and very unhealthy and expensive for what you really get.

Do you guys know this? - Every few months I get cravings for McDonalds. The process is always the same. First there is the McDonalds hunger that makes you forget your reservations. And once you walk in there and smell the stuff, it lets you greedily choose the large portions. During the meal, the McDonalds eating frenzy sets in, which lets you eat all the stuff in record time and wich makes me want to order and eat even more. Then comes the Mcdonalds sickness that goes hand in hand with the McDonalds brick in your stomach and the McDonald's guilty conscience because you know that you really haven't done your body a favor. Lastly comes te McDonalds regret wich is enough to keep my hands off the stuff for a few months, until at some point everything negative is forgotten and the whole thing starts all over again.

Interestingly, same distance for Subway, sandwich is also hot when I leave, but cold when I get back, yet it still taste SO GOOD. That has me wondering about the quality of McDOnalds food. Good food doesn't often taste significantly worse just because it's cold to me.

Fructose is the sugar that is present naturally in fruits and plants. So glucose-fructose, also called sucrose is standard table sugar. The difference in the two basically come down to how they are broken up in human body. And yes, it is still not good for you in excess but corn syrup is the worst offender. Also I think they list the ingredient in the order of how much each ingredient is in the product and that tells you a lot also.

      From wikipedia:
High-fructose corn syrup, also known as glucose-fructose, isoglucose and glucose-fructose syrup, is a sweetener made from corn starch. As in the production of conventional corn syrup, the starch is broken down into glucose by enzymes.

    • @helloweener2007
      @helloweener2007 Рік тому +3

      Not exactly.
Standard table sugar is a double sugar or biose. It ius a milecule that is made of glucose and fructose. So you have a ratio of 50:50.
Glucose-fructose syrup is a mixture of glucose and fructose. So there is no chemical bond between them.
It has more than 50% of fructose which can go up to 90% of fructose.
Common high corn syrups are HFCS-55 and HFSC-42 which contain 55% or 42% of fructose.

There is actually a burger I crave so much, because it’s only available in January-February in Austria and probably Germany/Switzerland (?)… the Big Rösti. It’s a burger with a special cheesy-mustard-mayonnaise sauce, hash browns, Emmentaler cheese and bacon. It would be nice to eat some specials of other countries.
I’m not a fan of fastfood, but as long as you don’t eat it on a regular basis, it should be ok. We have a saying here „Genieße in Maßen, nicht in Massen“ literal translation: „enjoy in moderation not in bulk“. In German it forms a nice play on words, because both „in Maßen“ (in moderation) and „in Massen“ (in bulk) sound pretty similar (other emphasis). So if you eat something only every other day or once in a while, it stays special and you can appreciate it much more. I like this attitude.

There's a bunch of coloring agents that are either left out or outright forbidden in Europe because they're either bad for you or can cover up spoiled ingredients.
Of *course* no one would ever dream of using meat that's slightly past the best before date, but if you can hide it by injecting it with... I forgot what it's called. What’s Glucose and Fructose? Well, if you eat normal sugar, this breaks down to equal part of Glucose and Fructose. Glucose is burned by your organs and muscles. Fructose can only be burned by your liver, where most of the Fructose surplus is transformed and stored as fat. Thus, high-fructose corn syrup is the last you want to eat if to stay in shape. Fructose from full fruits is on a low level that the liver can handle, but not even fruit juice is good to you given the concentration of fructose you’ll get.

"Normal" white sugar (i.e. sucrose, from sugar beet or sugar cane etc.) is a double-sugar molecule called disaccharide, so it can be broken into two parts: 1 part glucose (which is not very sweet) and 1 part fructose (which is very sweet). This is done in your stomach, but can also be done by cheap bacteria enzyme processes in the industry. To achieve a certain level of sweetness (which is important to keep people hungry and addicted) the industry adds cheap sweet fructose, in the US made of corn syrup (starch) by converting glucose to fructose by a different bacteria/enzyme. But: In nature we normally digest a more or less 1:1 mixture of glucose and fructose. That's important, because the human body has some problems with fructose in higher amounts and many people don't really tolerate fructose that good. High levels of fructose in you guts will likely damage the intestinal flora and often leads to osmotic diarrhea. The absorption of glucose is completely different, to put it (very) simply: Your body needs one molecule of glucose to process one molecule of fructose. If you ate sucrose (normal white sugar) this is fine, because one molecule of sucrose gives a 1:1 ratio of glucose:fructose.
If you split sucrose into its parts, you get a glucose-fructose-mixture of about 1:1. But if you convert corn syrup into fructose, you get a much sweeter (!) mixture with more fructose than glucose (or other sugars). The sequence of words is important here: a fructose-glucose-mixture has more fructose than glucose (fructose is named before glucose) and vice versa. A glucose-fructose-mixture is normally tolerated by most people's guts (more glucose than fructose) while the opposite fructose-glucose-mixtures can make some people sick. So it's a very good idea to avoid any food that contains high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), but the US food industry still has a very strong lobby, so you won't get any warnings about HFCS in the USA whereas the European Food Safety Authority has finally some warnings now, see "Tolerable upper intake level for dietary sugars" by EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens, 2/2022.
Or short: Just avoid any added sugar, and fructose is the bad guy among all common sugars.

Here in the UK, the wrap of the day is extremely popular. It's usually ordered alongside a normal meal and eaten the next day or before the rest of the meal but the wraps are very popular. Also I feel like McDonald's/Maccies here are partly lower in calories and more healthy due to a lot colleges/sixth forms (11th and 12 grade) being placed directly next to McDonald's in a town so everyone goes there for lunch.

When I went to McDonald's in the past I often said "I am going to McD., I am craving this sick feeling afterwards." (Which actually was always meant literally ... compared to our everyday food, this type of fast food is, ehm ........... )
This said, I heard from colleagues from the US, that the quality of our McD food is better by far, esp. the meat. And seemingly also less depending on where the restaurant (sigh) is located, compared to the US.
Germany has also excellent fast food choices, like Currywurst (curry sausage, served with an excellent sauce, curry powder and fries or bread) and the famous Döner Kebab , a turkish-german invention (kebab, onions, tomatoes, all kind of salat and garlic, curry or safran and hot/spicy chili sauce in a nice special bread). Also, fresh bread rolls with all kind of toppings and Pizza is very popular, among many other street food choices, in this regard, Germany is quite multicultural.
So, burgers have to be quite good to compete. And since American fast food has always had a really bad reputation over here, as being very unhealthy, in comparison to local food, I guess they tried to do things differently over here, starting with smaller portions, probably less sugar, no corn syrup, less calories etc. ... (And with the McCafe area idea, where everything tries to be a bit classier, with porcelain plates and mugs, real glasses, metal flatware etc., where you can get actually nice sweet pastries and coffee.)
And I guess, if you open up a McD in, say Paris, you have to have excellent quality for sure, French cuisine is hard to beat.
(Actually, food quality in Europe is really high in general. Guaranteed by EU and country regulations.)

While mostly they're all pretty similar, I found that the US had the tastiest (probably because of more salt/sugar/flavourings etc), and Romania had the least tasty. I did get to try McD in Russia, before it was removed relatively recently, and it was fairly standard. Anyway, give me BK every time... well, almost every time - sometimes I just want a McD!!! 😁

I'm going to play devil's advocate for once. It's crazy that the US versions "need" all the aditives, but the names of those products are sometimes just scary to people not used to organic chemistry naming conventions. Basicly, all molecules that are composed with carbon have these convoluted names that sometimes make them sound like lab produced poisons. In reality almost everything coming from the living world is carbon based and has one of those scary names. For instance "Propylene glycol alginate" is a complex sugar extracted from brown algae, not saying that it is safe for consuption, I don't know, but the scientific names can sometimes dramatise things.

And our budget told us (besides of the taste of genuine british citchen we tried once) to stick to McDonalds, Burger King and Pizza Hut. And it tasted not different. And once in Beijing, we visisted McDonalds. That was in the late 90es of the last century. Our Guide told us, only children visit that, but there were a lot of grownups cued up, and only after some people left new ones were allowed to enter. The taste was definitely the same as here, only the Fries were sooo much better!

Double cheeseburger costs more than double than a single cheeseburger, so you get more for buying 2 regular cheeseburgers. And about nuggets, buying 2 sets of 4, its cheaper than buying a set of 6 or set of 8, and actually extremely cheaper. Like here in latvia a set of 4 nuggets costs 1.2 eur, a set of 6 is 2.5 eur, and a set of 8 is 3.9 eur. So you buy 2x4, and you save nearly half of price. I wonder hows it in usa.

The vegetarian options are not likely to taste the way the name makes you think. It is usually named after the protein source, i.e. beans, but often is "designed" to taste similar to other menu items. As a "long term" vegetarian I can't tell you if it tastes similar to the meat version, nor would I care if they weren't, but they often try to get it similar so meat eaters will also purchase it from time to time.
I have not tried many of those, both due to the above comment and the fact I haven't been to the UK in... over a decade(?), so I can't tell you how different UK and US taste. Then again I haven't been to the US in years and don't think I'd have hit a McD's on "every" trip so no idea how long it has been since I ate the US version either.
