    i love the way mother nature removes the fish, empties the pond and whips out the pressure washer.

      Yup, standard "we clean ponds for a living" BS. Sure, clean a pond if you want but save all the "natural" BS. I use a DIY Muck Mop vacuum. Way easier. Same as vacuuming a pool.

    So, empty the pond completely and clean, add de-chlorinated water, remove all filter media with good bacteria, and the fish now survives straight away? I find this method fishy.. =/

    Those fish will be dead by morning. There was no attempt to acclimatize the fish to the ph of the new pond water or the differing temperatures of the water. The water from the original pond that went into the holding tank should have gone back into the pond and the new water added slowly. Pond salt should have been added. Those poor fish didn’t have any oxygenating plants added. Water lily’s are beautiful but the fish need under water plants. And carrying the fish in the net! Don’t get me started…The pond guy knew about the building/construction of a pond but nothing about the maintenance of the life within it.

    I’m sorry but this was barely useful. All I learned from this is to call a professional. None of the major steps like how to pump out the water for instance were demoed. I inherited a pond a few months ago and was really looking forward to watching your tutorial because they are usually very informative.

    I wish that this old house would start making their longer episodes where they build or restore a home like they did before the pandemic? Things have opened up and yet it seems like these videos like this one that is very short are in the field? I am not much into the live videos but the long videos or the videos that had a continuation until the project was complete?

    Only thing I would do different is fill the holding tank with fresh water and then run a recirculating pump to keep the water cool so the fish don’t have any issues.

    Barley straw is the key to algae

    • @eagles5769
      @eagles5769 2 роки тому

      Plants alone can do the trick and is the cheapest. I save all my plants in my garage over the winter and they usually survive for the spring. With barley straw, you will have to keep buying it, but I know that does work too.

    How does one convert old swimming pool to a recreational pond?

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 2 роки тому

      Clean it, remove the chlorine from it, either by running without chlorine or anything for a month, or simply change the entire water volume by draining and filling again. Then you change the filter sand completely, or change the filter to a new one, air column filter and smaller pump, and leave to settle for a week, then put in some starter culture of bacteria for the filter. After that then start with some small hardy fish, let them acclimatise, provide food, shelter using plants floating in baskets, and some rocks to act as hiding space, and leave for a month to settle down. then add more fish to the capacity of the pool, though if they are liking the place the small ones will grow and breed.
