I cycle on the old tracks they put down a path to Paisley and you can actually see the abandoned platform and the old path in the platform down to the road, really fascinating
@REAL CAGGY55 Same but mines is the greenock and Ayrshire railway up the gibby its me zak from greenock the nine archs viaduct was demolished in 1970 its at devol glen a wee cut down at the start when u doing the greenock way and I can meet you there sometimes I had to go greenock toon after school zak from greenock
Just found this classic piece of video. I used the train from Paisley Canal to Glasgow most weekdays and was an objector to the closure of the line. Really enjoyed this posting.
At the18:02 mark you see the old goods shed. I remember as a kid my fiends and I snuck in there as it had been abandoned (or so we thought) for a couple years, found someone was storing about 20 vintage cars inside. Was really cool.
I was based at Thornley Park telephone exchange for about 6 months in 1972/3. I used this line to get to and from Glasgow Central. I was lucky in that the timing of the trains at Paisley (Canal) made it a more convenient service rather than the ones via Gilmour Street.
I have been looking for this footage for a long time. I used to play on the Dummy line, right up to the canal line when I stayed in Foxbar. I wanted to travel on this line but never did. At least I can see it now. Its a shame they closed this line. Would be a profitable line now and a handy bypass to Glasgow from the Elderslie junction. Many thanks for sharing this
This service if reintroduced would take many cars off the road. There have been many new housing estates built and all these new people have to commute to Glasgow and Paisley by car now. Even a tram system using the old track beds I think would be profitable.
I once had this dream of me meeting real caggy 55 lol and my dad went to London with my gran to see family look how much central station changed my granda used catch a train from gibshill to highholm school
With population growth along the line and a societal switch back in favour of public transport - plus more efficient, electric trains . . . I wonder how the line would do today if it where re-opened
ScotTVHeritage was this deliberatelyrun down to closure with agreement to electrify the Largs/Ayr lines. I’ve always thought that this route today electrified and terminating in upper port Glasgow would be as successful as the Airdrie-Bathgate, the Alloa line and the borders line.
Now that several routes in the Glasgow to Edinburgh are electrified this lost railway could be included in these newly integrated services (which now include North Berwick and Alloa) .therefore, why not Kilmalcolm to north Berwick /Alloa serving the Country’s two major conurbations
@@allancopland1768 well aware - actually a railway worker myself. I'm referring to the Kilmacolm section itself. Although Paisley Canal to Elderslie would also be worth considering.
Just discovered this. Brought up just around the corner from Mosspark Station and we used to get the train into town. Often saw the APT at Shields Depot. Remember the line closing then it being reopened as far as Paisley Canal (new)
I suppose the real question is: why did it close? Politics, is the answer. The former Strathclyde Regional Council wanted to show that it was serious about running a lower cost railway. Closure was followed by the Strathclyde Rail Review, advocating truncation of the Neilston branch amongst other things. What the public indeed got was a more efficient system, with driver only operation on electric routes and (ouch) those single lead junctions. The context of course: Thatcherism. Now discuss, giving reasons for your views!
Wondering if a video exists of the piece that was lost before this. I'm thinking line went on to Port Glasgow at one point? Presumably to Gourock or Wemyss Bay too? I've been in the pub at where I think the station was in Kilmacolm a few times, and I also lived yards from the disused Port section of the line. Used to play there as a 4/5yo when I lived on Moray Road and would love to see the train winding its way down. How it got from Moray Road to the Port Glasgow station is beyond me as it was a ridiculously steep downhill drop. Also been told the shop Amadi's in Port Glasgow was a railway carriage.
It’s really interesting this cause I always went along this track on my pedal bike when I was little after it got made in the 90s I love going out my way to look at the old line from Greenock up to the top of port Glasgow were I am from it should still be here busses are unreliable
From memory, the bucket was empty from the (probable) to refill the station fireplace, as it was unloaded at Kilmalcolm - but didn’t see it going back filled!
What utter nonsense. It just made life harder for people, especially youngsters who were trapped in the village after they cut the evening bus service.
Would love to see a video of the trains going up the Port Glasgow line my house is on Auchenbothie Road just alongside the old railway which used to run right through from Kilmalcolm to & from higher Port Glasgow right down to Greenock & beyond xx
This is a great record of something that, quite frankly, should still be there. Thanks for posting.
Buses out that way are ridiculous, definitely needs this line back

Definite lack of vision there . Building over the track bed in Paisley was monumentally stupid
Love the pre-electronic destination boards at Central Station. And I agree with other commenters that this line should never have veen closed.

Great memories getting the train from Quarriers Bridge Of Weir to Glasgow for a day out as a teenager.
When we lived near Crookston Station in the sixties, I used to get a steam train from Crookston to Mosspark West to go to Cardonald Primary.

Short and sweet bit of history there, thanks👍
Thanks for the video As have started a wee project on the history of the paisley canal line and this is a brilliant find :)
Carla Sandilands how are you getting on with the project x

There’s a cycle path now so the track couldn’t go down also I do it

Took a few trips - always seemed well supported on my journeys
The Kilmacolm branch was a victim of Serpell alongside the Woodside and Clayton West branches.
Bloody hell.. I cycle through this route on the bike path and it looks barely recognisable, I'd love to go back in time for a week to this period.
Great footage ScotTV. Do you have the full unedited film by any chance? Thanks
It saddens me too... as you saw, with just 3 passengers it wasn’t self-sufficient. ☹️

Always thought that this line could be reintroduced as an alternative line to Glasgow Central from Greenock. Shame it's not considered.

Not a train buff but I have nostalgia for the area I grew up in so this is fascinating to see

All that Scottish blue enamel and semaphores. Lovely. I wonder what happened to all those totems,do you have one? 20:57
Why did the guard pick up a bucket at bridge of weir ?
Either a bucket of coal for Kilmalcolm Station, or a bucket to mop the train’s floor during lay-over at Kilmalcolm??
Such a shame 😔This could have been Presevered for Classic railway outings 🛤️
Been along the path to houston & crosslee, station house is now gone. Should've never left
Kilmacolm and indeed Bridge of Weir would both benefit from a train service again. Buses are bloody useless out that way as well
My brain when I read about closures in
the 1960s is like Meh, Beeching
the 1970s is like OK?
the 1980s is like what the actual flip
The train in the film was almost empty. Closure inevitable.
What was the bucket for?
Closed our line to Lochwinnoch same year, thanks for nothing Dr Beeching
This happened long after Dr Beeching.
14:16 what's the story with the bucket getting taken on the train?
From memory, the bucket was empty from the (probable) to refill the station fireplace, as it was unloaded at Kilmalcolm - but didn’t see it going back filled!

The good thing is that Kilmacolm will retain some of its identity not being so easily gotten to from Glasgow.
