Changing the radio station isn't the same as Whatsapping or scrolling Insta. Car screens and Android Auto / Apple Carplay have deliberately dumbed down interfaces that don't allow much typing or interaction.
Really glad they mentioned pedestrian impact safety, although briefly. Torn about the lack of rear window, since that's an important porthole to the driver of the vehicle. Not being able to see the person inside the car from the rear makes communication, anticipation and understanding what the driver is doing a lot more difficult.
That's a very good point. If I'm cycling past a line of parked cars I always keep an eye out for the ones with someone in the driver's seat because those are the ones that are going to door you. Much harder with this design and the electronic tools won't alert the driver, because the car will be turned off at that point.
There’s plenty of cars around now (and have been for some time) that are bigger and take up more space than this does. Really don’t think it’s an issue.
So as soon as the camera breaks you can't see anything behind you and ten years from now you won't be able to get replacements, which means the car will be basically scrap. Heck, even if the camera gets dirty you're going to struggle. Also, how well does it handle glare from the sun? You can bang on about 360 view all you like, but we already have that, in the form of very simple, easy to replace tech called........windows. Cars really are getting silly with all the tat they try to jam into them to justify the ridiculously high prices we now see.
Heck, while they're at it, remove the windshield and replace it with a 50" display.... Absolutely silly idea to replace windows and mirrors with cameras and screens. Wasteful, needlessly complex, inconvenient and unsafe!
@@tonyhawk123vans have large mirrors with blind spot mirrors too. It’s also a necessary part of their function to not have a back window, and people know this and will take extra care when behind them. The problem with a camera is that is has no peripheral vision and doesn’t pan around.
Yea haha. My daily is a polestar 2 and I love it. Best car. I also have an old old car that I drive couple days a month and just have fun but I would never have it as a daily because of the cars that we have these days.
Looks alright, out my price range. Am i the only one would wants a really old school feeling EV? I dont mean restomod but just a very analog feeling car with an EV powertrain. I am talking basic seats, door locks, knobs on the dash, no fancy over the top sensors in the wheels that adjust the suspension none of that. Basically as if they took a car from the 2000s and made it run on an electric motor instead of combustion. Cheap, fun to drive, gets you from A-B no fancy gimmicks or screens just a tool to travel in. For me less is more, i want something cheap and easy to work on that i dont really care about getting bush rash on or something or a sensor taking the entire car out that costs a few 1000. I dont care for headlights that are £800+ each none of that rubbish. Oh and glass, whats with them putting glass on roofs and stuff now! Just stop it nobody is looking up while driving right?
I am a Polestar 2 Dual Motor owner I will be keen to buy this car in the next year or so as our second or potential replacement Polestar. I look forward to test-driving it. We still love our Polestar 2.
Pretty disappointed by this- BRILLIANT video again from Jonny! I'm beginning to see why people are turning away from BEV. The tech isn't advancing quickly enough, charge times, battery range etc hasn't improved much in the last 5 years. In the meantime prices are going up, charging costs are going up and manufacturers seem obsessed with selling us cars we don't want or need. Who wants an SUV/coupe?! It looks MASSIVE and yet the boot is useless, my measure for a practical boot is a Volvo 240- can you fit a washing machine sized box in the boot? Nope, then its not a family vehicle. Everything about it looks enormous and yet the place where EVs make any sense at all is in 'urban areas' and yet, thats the very same place where space on the road is at a premium. I really wish a manufacturer would think about how cars are used in the real world, what the real world looks like and make something thats fit for that purpose, rather than trying to create a futurist, blade runner esq aesthetic that is neither practical nor appealing.
id love to have that Martin fella review this vehicle ,he was by FAR your best guest and i loved that RS1600 Escort ,Jonny that previous video was your best to date
Great video. Current Polestar2 LRDM owner here, and this is square in my sights as a next car. Overall, I think I'd like it - but I do have some reservations about a camera instead of a mirror, given how bad the rear view camera on the PS2 is once there's a mist of dirty road water and tree sap misted on the lens. Also you can keep the autonomous driving, I'd be un-checking that option! Oh and the labelling of all the parts with their eco-credentials looks ridiculous too ... stop that please Polestar, makes me look really self-righteous as the owner.
Agreed on the labelling - it feels like homes with 3d wording or a wall sign in the kitchen instructing visitors what to think. Keep the environmentally conscious materials but quit the self righteousness vibe.
To be fair though, the rear camera on the P2 is for reversing only and not a "rear view" camera as such, plus, it is situated just above the registration plate, so is bound to get mucky. The HD rear view camera on the 4 is roof mounted and has an overhung cover, I would expect they have run multiple tests this position in all weather types to ensure it remains clean and clear and meets all regulations. I am also a Polestar 2 driver , Launch Edition DM PP and looking as the Polestar 4 DM as my next car, no question.
Pricy The lack of a window is interesting. The designer is trying very hard to justify it but I'm not convinced. The studio lights being used is a direct result of it as an example. Is there uranus?! Such good camera work btw
Why is no rear window a “huge problem?” I'd say restricted FOV and blind spots are a bigger problem with rear windows, and a camera based system gets around that.
Had a polestar 2 for 6 months, great car, only downsides is the ride is really hard and the centre raised stack inside restricts leg movement and makes it feel claustrophobic. Currently in a 24 Highland and I get the hype.
“… In a way that you’re above the road.” Unlike all those non new SUVs where you sit below the road…. Just love the way designers talk. About as much sense as wine tasting notes.
I had one for 2 years and thoroughly enjoyed it; it always received a lot of attention as they were, and still are, rare (and have now been discontinued)! 🙂
I own a PS2, I just hope they have designed a way to clean the rear-view camera, the one on the PS2 gets filthy and is of very little use in a UK winter. I'll definitely consider this for my next car but also looking at Q6 e-tron, and of course the new Macan.
It will constitute a qualitative leap and shift in design and engineering in the automotive industry. The best shape ever, these are the cars of the future
I thought Polestar are going bust. Anyhow why do we need massive big EV's which are primarily more suited for city driving so we get another road crushing SUV that very few can afford or want.
No, Polestar are not going bust, Volvo is no longer investing in Polestar, possible reducing their shares. Which means Polestar gets more independant or Geely takes it up further.
Really like the current Volvo and Polestar design language. They all look really clean and classy, so much better than any Tesla offering. But I do wish manufacturers would stop using the SUV tag as a marketing gimmick. That is not an SUV! ( thank God!)
Would like to know the design thinking that resulted in the rear camera and window being mutually exclusive? Nothing to say that both can’t exist together, with the camera there to augment the rear vision when needed…night, big load, reverse manoeuvring etc. etc.
That's also going to be a tad annoying to drive behind. On most cars you can look through the vehicle at the brake lights of the one in front. Makes easier to anticipate on the highway. That's not going to be the case with this.
Great Vid Jonny! Is there a viewing depth perception issue with the car being reliant on the rear facing camera/screen? I know a number of other cars have this tech but they mostly have rear windows as well and can flip between screen and mirror, have heard comments about judging distance. Thoughts? Is there a 3D tech option available?
I worked in the same building as Polestar Germany and they regularly hat events where you could test drive them for an hour. Loved driving the Polestar 2 and I am seriously considering the 4 after seeing this. Love the back-end and the interior. I didn't know they made so few Polestar 1's, we'd always see several in the parking garage of the building.
I am a PS2 user for three years and very satisfied with the car especially the quality and design. Will definitely buy PS4 this year to replace my PS2. Can't wait
EVs are rapidly becoming more soul less than one could imagine. I don't see anyone getting emotionally attached to an EV in the way we love say a Lotus Carlton, a 911 or a Quattro or a real ICE car!
Sorry Jonny, after 10 mins I drifted off and started gazing out the window. There is something inherently dull about Ev's no matter how you spin it. I'm no EV hater, I have one, an MG ZS and I'm perfectly happy with it. Interesting it is not. Listening to a designer talking about certain little design features is really tedious. Oh well, carry on Jonny, look forward to your next one. 😁👍
Excellent video as usual, and a great looking car too. But removing the rear window and then trying to say "it actually has a rear window" while pointing to a camera? Give it a rest. If Tesla had done this the entire internet would be ablaze with people taking the piss.
Fabulous to see you Back doing 'design led' Car reviews, your the best in the business at this 👍. I used to love it in the early days when you and your notebook went off to the Tokyo motor show 👏
No rear window? Sorry, No. Plain unsafe in all public and private reverse parking scenarios. You need to crane your head to see round the corners. Cameras just don’t cover all angles, it’s an eyes on thing.
I've driven my Polestar 2 now for 3 years and can honestly say, I have very rarely turned my head to look out the rear window when reversing. The reason? Superb reversing camera giving a 360 Degree all round the car view, collision sensors that work faultlessly and warn in an ultra wide angle, where the human eye cannot. It is just a matter of getting used to trusting the technology. If you are unable to do that, then perhaps you are not ready for the future just yet.
The closest thing to an EV estate until A6 Avant e-tron arrives, upgrading to this from my PS2 which has been brilliant. 300 miles of genuine range also without having to drive like a grannie.
Yes, every EV review video seems the same. Range, boot size, inflated sale price , endless scrolling through iPad sub menus to alter the heater fan etc.
Looks great. To big, to heavy, to expensive. Filling up road and car park space with SUV that’s a coupe. Hmmm. And the revolutionary light up logo. Eat your heart out Riley and Woseley. 😆
Still never buying a Chinese / Chinese-made car. edit : Currently owning a Korean EV and a Japanese EV, China is the issue here. Want that Renault 5 though.
Polestar 4 will be made in both China and Korea. What is the issue with being made in China anyway? Have you considered where the majority of parts that make your phone, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, cooker works, not to mention both your Japanese and Korean built cars! lol
Beautiful design ! Long wheelbase, short overhangs, and perfectly balanced proportions...seems shorter and lower than what really is. From the back it gives hints of Volvo PV444 in a "retro-futuristic" kind of way. I don't give a damn if its not the best EV of the market, the fastest or the most efficient, because as a piece of design its just formidable.
4.84 metres in length, 2.14 in width, that is a MASSIVE car. I know that's not what Polestar is about, so it's a bit off topic, but I wish someone would make something small that still is a good all-rounder EV. There was an early batch with the Renault Zoe and the Pegeout e208, but it seems that all the interest has died down on that kind of car and no evolution of the concept of something-more-than-just-a-city-car is coming up. I'm looking for a car like that myself but the only option in the market right now if it's your only car is the ID.3/Cupra Born.
City car sized EVs just aren’t profitable enough for most manufacturers to bother. Time was a small car meant less options & less equipment but those days are long over and thus small cars become less and less profitable as people demand the same kit as they’d get in the next model up but for markedly less money. With EVs costing a premium already, most people would look at the price of a genuinely small EV and turn their nose up, understandably. Honda E was getting on for £40k new and you could get a whole lot more car for either the same money if you went ICE or maybe 10-20% more if you stuck with EV. Not that anyone actually buys a brand new car anyway, but that’s the reason, ultimately.
So if the rear camera fails, you can’t check your rear view mirror before braking suddenly like I do in our car. Car looks great to be honest, but no actual rear window could be a deal breaker for most people
It’s still got side mirrors if you need to see behind sans-camera. Not only that but considering how awful rear visibility is in plenty of cars *with* a rear screen and the fact that vans with no rear windows aren’t constantly causing pile-ups I really think people are overstating the importance of having a rear screen & traditional centre mirror.
Compared to many ev manufacturers I’ve always found the Polestar’s pretty. Ioniq 5 being the exception. I think they are great. They have a whiff of Marstro to them. Am I crazy ?🤪

Changing the radio station isn't the same as Whatsapping or scrolling Insta. Car screens and Android Auto / Apple Carplay have deliberately dumbed down interfaces that don't allow much typing or interaction.
@@MyMednastrue but it is distracting and pulling your view away from traffic. No one is just a stoic in their car is my experience.
Totally. I love my EV but having to take my eyes off the road for a second or two every time I need to change something is not good.

Really glad they mentioned pedestrian impact safety, although briefly. Torn about the lack of rear window, since that's an important porthole to the driver of the vehicle. Not being able to see the person inside the car from the rear makes communication, anticipation and understanding what the driver is doing a lot more difficult.
Especially since the one driving behind can’t observe the traffic in front!
That's a very good point. If I'm cycling past a line of parked cars I always keep an eye out for the ones with someone in the driver's seat because those are the ones that are going to door you. Much harder with this design and the electronic tools won't alert the driver, because the car will be turned off at that point.
Wonder if our roads and car parks are going to increase in size to accommodate these ever larger vehicles, no, thought not
There’s plenty of cars around now (and have been for some time) that are bigger and take up more space than this does. Really don’t think it’s an issue.
Large European cars are selling since forever
Wider than a Mercedes Sprinter van!
Nobody's forcing you to have one. Just buy another car.
Nobody's forcing you to have one. Just buy another car.
Heck, while they're at it, remove the windshield and replace it with a 50" display.... Absolutely silly idea to replace windows and mirrors with cameras and screens. Wasteful, needlessly complex, inconvenient and unsafe!
You can still see behind you by using the door mirrors...
@@ulwurand nobody asked for your "opinion" so just get used to the fact that yours has no greater value than anyone else's.
Focus on ambient lighting? This is not a car.
And why is this not marked as an ad?
It is not an ad, because it's a walk round video where I got chance to speak with the designer.
@@TheLateBrakeShow C'mon - its a bit of an ad in that there was precious little "journalism" - just lots of sage nodding and agreeing.....
£60K to £70K for a family car filled with unnecessary tech turned me off straight away. No thanks.
Jeez, that's HUGE! So, that's genius (not) when the rear 'window' camera breaks/gets covered in ice/leaves/dirt etc.
Drama xD
“When”? As they said, vans and supercars already have it. World hasnt imploded yet.
@@tonyhawk123vans have large mirrors with blind spot mirrors too. It’s also a necessary part of their function to not have a back window, and people know this and will take extra care when behind them.
The problem with a camera is that is has no peripheral vision and doesn’t pan around.
It's shorter than a 5 series with a lot more rear passenger space.
Isn’t he one of the nicest guys you’ve seen from a vehicle manufacturer on video. Props to Jonny, mega high quality video as always 🤝🏻
Having no rear window makes no sense - especially for dog owners. If they make a wagon variant I’d be interested
Another excellent review 👏🏽
''Sorry sir ..we don't put back windows in wagons either''😑
Check out the Fisker Ocean. That one comes with a rear window that opens as well as a pair of side doggie windows.
Joke's on them; My wagon is always full and I can't see out the back anyway.
I don't care if dogs travel in a suitcase.
@@thursdayblackhave nothing to do about that. It’s about makin more room for head and so on for people sittin
Very polite Johnny. First they take away all the switches, then they start on the windows!
When they come for the steering wheels, they'll be no one left to defend them!
That is just fine. Much much better than for example getting rid of half of the steering wheel or stalks :)
3:54 "Thanks for giving you some of my time..." 😊
Day to day driving these things are the future. But I still love the feeling of driving a totally manual, non - tech pre 2000’s car :)
Next they will get rid of the windscreen and fit a camera. Windows are good they let in light.
I am a Polestar 2 Dual Motor owner I will be keen to buy this car in the next year or so as our second or potential replacement Polestar. I look forward to test-driving it. We still love our Polestar 2.
Great vid. Good looking thing. Also enjoyed JS: "Max, thanks for giving you some of my time" 😂
So I wasn’t the only one thinking about that phrase. I find it funny too. 😁
This car looks superb, sadly it’s just too expensive, cheers fella 👍😉💪
Agree. Maybe by a 2 year old one?
They make cars people want to buy. Just not you.
@tris 100%. We need more traditional wagons and small to medium hatch backs. Way more practical and efficient
Looking at the numbers of EVs being sold I politely disagree. @@MyMednas
Having seen the gaudy interior of the BMW i5, this interior looks so much cleaner and elegant.
Definitely and it's really cool
Your voice is the epitome of calm and soothing, drawing me into every detail about cars. It's the reason I hang on to every word in your videos!
id love to have that Martin fella review this vehicle ,he was by FAR your best guest and i loved that RS1600 Escort ,Jonny that previous video was your best to date
Purity of the logo… lol. This video could have skipped the marketing waffle guy 😂
It may be the first car with no rear window but lots of vans have no rear window. Not a problem in daily driving.
My dog really wouldn’t like going in the back of this
designers do talk in their own 'nerdy' language - and then Johnny comes along with 'thats a big old flap that' with a big smile !!
Currently out of my price range but I'd love to find a pre-owned one in a few years.
Crash safety could be greatly improved if it didn't have a front window. Why don't they leave that one off, too?
Pricy
The lack of a window is interesting. The designer is trying very hard to justify it but I'm not convinced. The studio lights being used is a direct result of it as an example.
Is there uranus?!
Such good camera work btw
I did giggle at that a little bit. If only there was an easy way to get more natural light into the rear of the car...
Very cool, but how is the dog going to stare out the back? 🐶😢
Me: Polestars are really good looking cars you know.
Also me: Well hello, Max...
Used to drive vans a lot, can't say I particularly found no rear window a huge problem.
I came to say this! I drive a transit just now without a back window 😂
Same. And my last two cars have had no rear wiper, which if you live in the UK, means you can't see out of the back for 70% of the time anyway. 🤣
Why is no rear window a “huge problem?” I'd say restricted FOV and blind spots are a bigger problem with rear windows, and a camera based system gets around that.
This weights like a van, too.
@@ElTio.45-70 does it aye? 😂
It's a sleek looking beast, one of the better looking EVs to date
I saw my first Honda e this morning. Cute little thing.
I had one for 2 years and thoroughly enjoyed it; it always received a lot of attention as they were, and still are, rare (and have now been discontinued)! 🙂
Designer wearing a black turtleneck... Now that's innovative 😂
Only sold to car designers, architects and Steve Jobs (well, I guess he's off the list now) 😂
I own a PS2, I just hope they have designed a way to clean the rear-view camera, the one on the PS2 gets filthy and is of very little use in a UK winter. I'll definitely consider this for my next car but also looking at Q6 e-tron, and of course the new Macan.
This is the coolest!
That will be fun to park in a regular underground car park.
Stop making EVs no one cares, these companies are going to bankrupt themselves if they carry on 😂
It will constitute a qualitative leap and shift in design and engineering in the automotive industry.
Nothing to say that both can’t exist together, with the camera there to augment the rear vision when needed…night, big load, reverse manoeuvring etc. etc.
So,you didn’t watch the video?
That's also going to be a tad annoying to drive behind. On most cars you can look through the vehicle at the brake lights of the one in front. Makes easier to anticipate on the highway. That's not going to be the case with this.
Take some advice, don't follow so close....remember...only a fool breaks the 2 second rule! lol
This one flips from mirror to camera also.
Another great video Johnny. You always seem to build up a good rapport with designers.
It’s all about the wheelbase :)
Bad Base 🎶
Love the design concepts. Would have liked to see how the rear camera that replaces the window actually works.
BMW wishes they would have turned the X6 into something like this! WOW!!! The Polestar 4 is SICK!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It really is amaz design
Stunning. If I had the money then that is what I would buy
8:30 - wait tor the cheeky smile!
The Vision bros are demonstrating the future of motoring. Wear a VR inside to see outside of a vehicle with no windows.
This looks more like a sedan liftback with just a more practical roofline compared to sedans.
I like the car honestly..
Beautiful, minimal and aesthetic design 🥵
No camera never ever breaks! So don’t worry about having no back window.
😬
Back windows also never break...right?
Or rear view mirrors that never break...right?
Stupid
I used to love it in the early days when you and your notebook went off to the Tokyo motor show 👏
14 cameras ..big brother stuff
its a pretty vehicle for sure, love the front
Fell asleep after 3 mins, no thanks
Yes, every EV review video seems the same. Range, boot size, inflated sale price , endless scrolling through iPad sub menus to alter the heater fan etc.
@@jimpackard8059Yep, my idea of hell.
Another fantastic first look at a new Car Jonny, through its not the car for me, you cannot fault the tech in this car.

67k for a family car when average Joe gets £11.00 per hour???? Doesn't add up really

👍🏽
I prefer a 3 minute stop at the V-power pump.
We have an E Tron, Cupra Born, Touareg TDi in the family and it’s a fight for the EV keys as we aren’t daft in what costs the least to run!!
Thanks Jonny - love your style. The car looks amazing.
Thanks for watching!
I'm sure i spotted two knobs in that Polestar Jonny! 😅
Never drive a van then pal lol
Great that you got the designer there with you also going over the design. Always the best review when you do them :)
Compared to many ev manufacturers I’ve always found the Polestar’s pretty. Ioniq 5 being the exception. I think they are great. They have a whiff of Marstro to them. Am I crazy ?🤪
Absolutely disgusting in terms of safety. People driving behind it can’t observe the traffic in front for NO FUCKING REASON!
Don't follow so closely then! LOL
Awesome another standard looking oversized EV, guess the rear window delete makes it even more like a van 😅
