Reason #11 - pretty soon, some blues player will show you a jazz chord they snuck into the turnaround to be just a bit different and explain the mechanics of it. And it will make sense and your knowledge of theory will grow.

No doubt John he's an excellent teacher but I think you have to be very careful about just wanting to water-down down everything to just three chords all the time.
The fact that blues music rarely deviates from 12 bars and three cords is what makes it kind of makes it boring and bland for listening purposes.
I agree with him for a quick learning perspective as far as a beginner goes who wants to quickly ' learn tunes' and impress others as his primary motivation.
But for me even though my journey was much longer and I unconsciously took the polar opposite approach, ( since I couldn't read music) I hunted in the couch covers for great sounds. That experimenting, the willingness to hit a bad note or the wrong note, constantly experimenting searching for the sounds as what made learning piano and bass personally exciting for me and a life-long enjoyment I can have until I pass on.
I've NEVER gotten bored with learning music. It's the most self motivating and rewarding Journey I've ever taken.
As Bill Evans said, I didn't deprive myself the opportunity to discovere for myself great sounds. That's what's made my music journey ( perhaps not a commercially successful one) WELL worth all the struggles to be where I am now. That's what makes it fun for me.
If I were only going just to play three chords I wouldn't even bother playing music anymore. Variety is the spice of life.
In any case, I do want to thank Johnny for guiding me to the right couch covers and cushions to look under four great sounds to save time.

@@philburpalooza8 hi, how long would it take me to complete the Bigginer and intermediate blues course, putting one hour a day?
Reason is, I want a good piano foundation for improvising and playing by ear.
I don't want to waist time.
      I won't read any sheets.

    • @philburpalooza8

@@BestTrader-hp2sd honestly I don't think I'm qualified to guess how long it would take. When I talk about my journey being a long circuitous one I'm not joking I had NO lessons (until discovering half dozen excellent teachers on UA-cam Johnny of course with another guy named Kent Hewitt) have been at it for close to 40 years... and play well enough to be an accompaniment person for almost any genre of band music... sound pretty good now. My OWN Journey was pretty unstructured for the first 30 years. For playing professionally and gigs I was a bass player since I was 17 . And then I finally had enough money just 9 years ago to own a full-sized keyboard when in the last nine years and have made excellent progress.... probably my most Genuine Music Talent is my precise ear. I can hear pitch difference in recorded music between 432hz mellow A 440 mainstream A and 448 concert pitch. A when it comes to notes.
Not having a full size keyboard was main The Factor on why I never learned proper voicings for chords even though I could hear them instantly. The last 7 years I've been playing catch up. And now that he puts out really basic music Concepts I can even read some music. Not being able to read music is what cost me studio gig studio type jobs playing keyboards and bass. I had to go out and make a real living in the real world but the street smarts I got I don't regret it. Everybody's path is unique.
Long story short if you follow the course and go a much MUCH more disciplined route I imagine you'd sound pretty good even after 3 to 6 months.

I'm learning jazz DB for 2.5 years now. And that's true. At my level, much easier to walk a blues line than a jazz line. But it's a work in progress. Moreover, learning jazz intricacy profits for other style of music.

Someone already added an eleventh reason to study blues first. But here is a number twelve: blues “cookie cutter” style format offers a solid foundation to develop hand independence at a super high level that will eventually make learning all other genres far easier to learn in the future...yes, Jazz but not just Jazz (any genre that you desire).

re #5 3 keys, that is incorrect. It only goes for piano and jazz bands. All guitar pop groups play blues in the keys of E or A. Jimmy Rushing only played blues in Eflat.

I have been playing the piano for long time and realized jazz play is far beyond blues play...
Elton John and Billy Joel play the piano excellent but can't even get near to jazz while Bruce Hornsby or Stevie Wonder can. I can hear it.

I don't care how many chord are in a jazz standard, it's still easier than trying to play those repeating left hand patterns that blues songs have. You almost never play straight chords in the blues. I am referring to playing solo piano, not accompaniment style (melody in the right hand, chord in the left).

Hell yeah you know you got three chores but you can express those three chords and boogie woogie or you can express it. And a salsa style and my reggae style reggae sale a classical music style he can express it in different tempos or you can play like a roll. Slow ballerly sound etc
