Platesolving and auto-centering in NINA!

  • Plate-solving and autocentering target is an amazing capability of advanced astrophotography software. NINA can communicate with third party (free) plate-solvers such as ASTAP or Astrometry.Net to precisely center the intended target, making imaging a breeze. In this video I am explaining all the settings related to plate-solving.
    Note that I made a mistake in the video - I forgot to download the G17 star catalog. Please make sure to do so!

    Cuiv, a great video and lots of good information. I will add that when I first used ASTAP it immediately failed. It gave me an error saying it couldn't find the G17database. I went back to the ASTAP website, downloaded te G17 installer, installed it and all was well.

    Yesterday I spent about 2 hours trying to make my iOptron GEM45EC work via ASCOM with Stellarium. The iOptron Commander just quit and crashed I had no idea why (looks like there are bugs in new version of it or Stellarium). I tried a different cable, I re-installed the drivers for it... then I decided to follow this tutorial by Cuiv (luckily I had ASTAP installed and used it in NINA for the manual platesolving), then !Magic! NINA worked well with my mount and just slewed it to the right location (I had NoSync turned OFF) - I have got an absolute catharsis after all that pain with Stellarium. NINA is a software we trust! Thank you, Cuiv for this short tutorial and for the promotion of this wonderful piece of software. I wish it stability and buglessness! Thank you, again, Cuiv!

    Thank you so much for these videos. I recently switched to NINA from APT. All I have to say is wow! What a difference. For the autofocusing and mosaic capabilities alone, I'm in love with this software. It doesn't hurt that I've also been an open source developer, so those decisions are dear to my heart. Cuiv, this is a great video with a LOT of good information. I always have had issues with platesolving (since I was using SGP) and this video helped me identify and understand a few parameters that I had wrong. BUT..."the cherry on top of the icing" was that you helped me understand why I was never able to perform an auto meridian flip sucessfuly. I always saw (with great dispair) how the mount and the software (SGP, NINA) were kind of "fighting each other" and the mount never settled after the flip. Even though it was not the main topic of this video, you pointed out how the Automatic Sync parameter was added to address issues with mounts that were "fighting" against the sync commands from NINA, which was exactly the issue I was having. Once I turned the Automatic Sync "Off" the mount did its first successful meridian flip completely automated!!!! Thank you for your wonderful videos. They are on the top of my UA-cam channel subscription list.

    Hello from Colorado. Thank you for the great videos. I've been wanting to use NINA since I first heard and saw the software. But it didn't support my EOS Ra so I got me an ASI Air pro and a ASI 294 MC Pro and that took care of me over the summer. But I thought I would just check on the latest nightly build to see if they finally had the EOS Ra and the CR3 Raw Format included and to my surprise it was. So I have been using NINA and my new Canon EOS Ra and I love the full frame image that NINA shows. Really shows of the Vignette of my WO GT102. The 294MC pro has the cropped 4/3 sensor and I could see the Vignette, but it was small. Until I looked at a full frame image. But I will say it is quite well centered in the frame. And I'm sure Flats will correct as they always do. Keep up the good Video's. Especially on NINA. I've got the simple sequence down. But still learning. ;o)

    Hi Cuiv, it's a long time since you recorded this. I really like your videos as I am learnning astrophotography besides my visual addiction to large dobsonian (Obsession UC22 under dark skies) and I have a question for you. I see in your videos that you can use the manual handpad of Eqmod after connecting NINA to your scope. For me it is impossible once I have launched NINA and connected it to the scope (EQ6R USB direct) whereas it works before doing that directly with Eqmod. Once NINA is connected, I have to use the hand control within NINA. Is it related to the evolution of NINA (I use the latest version used as of january 2023) or can you still control manually your mount with EQMOD after lauchning NINA and connecting it to your mount? Thanks in advance if you find time to answer. Frederic

    My solved DSOs are usually off centre. I understand the principles behind it. But it's almost as if the coordinates of the registered centre of a given DSO within the star database / sky coordinates is not the visual centre for AP purposes. I'm using ASTAP in NINA and its very fast but I have to manually recentre most objects. I'm using an Ioptron CEM40 and the GOTO is usually one degree off which is acceptable.... Would changing my Epoch make a difference? Also, I noticed that the centre of some objects in Stellarium are also off centre in exactly the same manner. I'm wondering / betting that a very small DSO would be better centred due to it not having a large vague nebulous area around it.

    Son of gun Cuiv I think you might have solved an intermittent problem I have been having. My Plate -solving rarely works the first time and sometimes not even the second time. I think it may be the sync to mount button may be the culprit. It has been particularly irritating because I had it set for two attempts then a 3 min interval for the second go through. PS. I did upgrade to the Beta N.I.N.A. but I am still using the baby sequencer. I really don't see any need for the Advanced sequencer yet. - Cheers Kurt

    Can you use the telescope after you first setup (and after polar aligning the mount) to plate solve and feed those coordinates back to the mount? Then every slew after that should be more accurate?

    • @CuivTheLazyGeek
      @CuivTheLazyGeek  3 роки тому

      The Platesolving syncs the coords to the mount in the first place, so effectively they are fed to the mount and every slew (in the vicinity of the object) afterwards is more accurate - it's an automatic side effect of plate-solving!

    Cuiv, if I have EQMOD and Nina set to use the JNOW epoch, then do I still need to set the target coordinates in the Sequence tab using J2000? If I use the Sky Atlas to set a sequence target, then will it use JNOW or J2000 coordinates? Won't this cause confusion between EQMOD and Nina?

    • @CuivTheLazyGeek
      @CuivTheLazyGeek  4 роки тому

      J2000 is usually the reference for targets, but never fear, NINA converts to what the mount expects (e.g. JNOW for your), if the setting under options -> general -> astrometry is set properly (although the proper epoch may now be taken from the mount directly, so that setting may no longer exist - not in front of computer)

      Welcome to the field of AP! You have a long but fun (and sometimes frustrating!) road ahead of you! You are correct, I never bother to do a star alignment. Hi Cuiv. I have converted!! I ran N.I.N.A. last night for the first time other than trials setting up gear. It worked really well although I need to tweak my autofocus settings a little. Only issue was the centering. It plate solved after the first slew but when centering the target stars were streaked slightly. You mentioned a settle time in your video. Where do I set that please? Thanks for all the videos so far. Without them I doubt I would have switched. Clear skies.

      Woohoo! Welcome to the wonderful world of NINA! As for the plate solve, ASTAP is indeed very particular about star shapes. For the settle time, you have one for the first plate solve after meridian flip, and one after each slew. I think I have both set to 15 seconds. Number 11 here nighttime-imaging.eu/docs/develop/site/tabs/options/imaging/ and number 7 here nighttime-imaging.eu/docs/develop/site/tabs/options/equipment/ . Good luck!

      Cuiv, The Lazy Geek Thank you. I’m still finding my way around but getting there. I had set the settle time to 10 secs. but don’t remember doing it! I’ve increased to 15 now. Maybe it was a gust of wind that caught the scope as it’s an SCT with a big heated dew shield. I’m going to try sorting the focus settings tonight using your videos to help. Thank you! I am a SGP user who has many questions.
    1- is the G17 catalog good for any field of view or is there different catalogs to get for the different telescopes one can own?
    2- Does NINA show the frame that is platesolved in the image window? It is nice to know if you are getting closer visually.
    3- Once the image is centered with ASTAP, is there a " center here instead" functionality to change the framing before starting to image?
    4- If the center of the frame is changed as in #3, can that change be saved in NINA for another imaging session on the same target but a different filter?
    Thank you again.

    • @CuivTheLazyGeek

      Welcome to the dark side Ha El :)
      1. If you have an SCT, you may want to go for the G18 catalog - but otherwise, G17 should work for most focal lengths
      2. Yes, the platesolved image is in the image window, so you can check it visually
      3. Not really a center here instead function - you'd need to go back to the framing wizard. Doable, but less convenient.
      4. Yes, just add the new center as new sequence target, then save the sequence!

    I’ve been a subscriber since early on and your videos have been instrumental getting my setup operational with NINA. Two days ago I installed the latest beta update to NINA and found some of my specific references to location files and keys on my laptop were gone and had to be reestablished. For example, I had to redo the plate solving set up, the color scheme and a few others. Is there a way to save these settings as a sidecar file somewhere and then reload it into a new version? This was a real pain to look up, reestablish these settings up again and get everything working again. Thanks again for your time and effort putting these videos together. We appreciate it!

    • @CuivTheLazyGeek

      I haven't used the Beta version yet (not since 1.10 came out!), but typically what you describe is linked to an instance of NINA not being closed properly, and launching a second one. The second instance will not have access to your usual profile. I assume you now have several profiles in the Options General tab because of that. The solution is simply to kill all NINA processes (or rebooting) before launching NINA again.

    I know this is a three year old video, but it's an issue I am currently trying to understand. I am using NINA with EQMOD. I have my telescope and SkyWatcher EQ6R mount on a permanent pier in an observatory, so it rarely moves and I rarely ever bother with a polar or three point alignment. But at startup I do an initial plate solve and try to sync it. Frequently, that results in an error message stating NINA could not sync the data. (The telescope is usually pointing near Polaris at that time since it's where I park it). So, if I understand correctly, I can go ahead and slew to target because the error report is just a harmless quirk in EQMOD and NINA can still navigate the telescope correctly? What you just said at 15:05--if sync in the Options: Telescope section is set to on, NINA might not have trouble with sync when doing a plate solve from the Image tab option--I think that may have resolved the concern.

I havent yet managed to remote blind solve in NINA useing the same image. APT is faster cleaner and easier to use. I will still keep trying to get to grips with NINA but i dont see me changing any time soon
