I was glad to see Robin appear on here! I’ve been maining them since their appearance in Smash 4, and it’s nice to hear that somebody I think is reputable also sees their potential. I hope this video inspires more players to pick them up, because I’d love to see how Robin performs in the highest echelons of professional play :)
Been maining Robin ever since I played Awakening for the first time back in late 2016. I never understood why they were ranked so low in tier lists because honestly they can go crazy.
@@ArdorG. Robin I think requires patience in order for his durability to not be a huge issue, which for non Fire Emblem fan is hard too except compared to Hero or Ness.
I agree with you on Bowser Jr. I started playing him recently, and even if I don't win with him, i still have so much fun. He has a lot of strengths that I think don't get talked about enough like his aerial combos and long range pressure. Most people don't want to give him the time of day because he's bowser jr.
As a Lucas main since Brawl, it's nice to see him here. There's a few things he's needed only to go untouched for the second half of Ultimate's patches (nair and dair could be a bit more consistent for example, and you can still survive PKT2 at over 120% while Ness' kills rather low), but he doesn't get enough credit. I'm excited for his why no one plays video.
So happy to see Wii Fit Trainer on here. They're one of my favorites. Their moves feel so satisfying to land. Not to mention the entertainment value of all the whistle blowing and little exercise quotes. Lol Edit: Yes. Robin too. Once I found out Robin had a pretty solid recovery, my spike-happy self was real invested. Anyone I can force to recover from below is gonna have me coming down there to attempt a down air since I know that as long as I have the green tome ready I can up-b back to stage from a pretty long ways.
One of the things to keep in mind about Ultimate is that we really don't have any "bad" characters in the sense that they don't work or can't function in the competitive environment, just bad relative to what we think of as good. I don't think we have any underrated characters so much as we have underplayed characters given that we know they are good. Like I personally think Wii Fit is at least as good as Falcon, but I can't justify placing her that high given results.
I think Robin in HDR is almost perfect. I didn't think a float using wind tome was something I always wanted on the character, but here we are. Also books coming back faster but not so fast that your aerials are always godlike. It really is good design philosophy.
Lucario is definitely underrate imo. He’s got SO many mixups and he has a lot that’s safe on shield and Aura Sphere is REALLY good at catching landings and an underrated camping tool imo.
As a heavy lucas main not a lot of people give him time like how they do ness but imo Lucas is way more technical and fundamental which makes him better too learn imo
Lucas Zair is an amazing combo tool, it's just very hard to learn. if you can pull it off it turns Lucas into a deadly character. Look up Blucas and see him wreck Samsora's peach!

rosa is underated imo. she can do cool stuff with her luma desync’s and its so satisfying killing your opponent from afar. i also like rosa as a character in general. she is a hard character to learn though.

Piranha plant is so underated. I was maining top tiers cause the seemed best for so long, until I got plant playing random with a friend, and fell in love with his trapping and edge guarding. Also dair up smash is the most satisfying kill confirm in the game, I love it.
I wanted to main Robin but he really struggles against rushdown characters which was the meta for a while. Against campers, Robin may have a chance of doing well if that is the direction of the meta going forward.
I would put Banjo-Kazooie on this. Attention on the pair almost immediately died out because they don't have any absurd DLC gimmicks, but they've still got a lot of great on them. - They have an up close boxing game not too far from being on par with someone like Mario in terms of speed, with standouts being jab, ftilt, up and down smash -The 11th fastest dash speed in the game -Recovery which can freely be mixed up due to not putting into free fall, adding on to infinite recovery akin to Snake C4 -The same weight as R.O.B. and Snake -Two projectiles that lead into combos, both of which are also good fallbacks to spam if needed. -Some of the easiest to land 2-Framing tools in the game with Down Tilt and Down Smash, along with FSmash and Wonderwing being absurdly early killing 2-Frames. -Basically FREE recovery at least 5 times a stock if needed. -A killing back throw and a down throw that at high percents can lead into 50/50 kills -Dr. Mario's Forward Air that autocancels off a short hop -And the one that I think most people forget. Banjo-Kazooie is a swordie. In all moves but dash and up tilt, Kazooie has no hurtbox. I don't think Banjo-Kazooie is top tier, hell I don't know if even low high tier but I can't fathom people putting them in bottom 10 bottom 20.
He does like literally no damage & lack any real combos and that infinite recovery thing has been proven to be impractical in actual matches both due to an opponent being able to interrupt you during the egg catch setups & the timing of everything being within like a 5 frame window for each step because you have to use down b at the right time, move to the exact right position to Z-Catch it without airdodging or using you double jump, and then use your double jump immediately to get blown up in such a way that you actually gain enough height with it. Doing it once offstage is somewhat reasonable, but any more than that in a row is prettymuch humanly unviable due to having less time to initially start the sequence of events
@@codyholley Banjo needs to be very patient and attack when the opponent makes a mistake or be campy if Banjo can't find an opening. He's kinda like Sonic in a sense. In Banjo Tooie, boss fights are about running away from the bosses until they expose themselves. It also take about 6 mins to beat the Hag 1 in Banjo Tooie as well. Also Banjo's nair can sometimes damage characters on shield. One trick I discovered is that Banjo can edge guard with nair, and if Shockspring jump isn't enough he can use Wonderwing to make it back on stage.
As a pit main I agree with all of it, even though pits have some well known bad hit boxes, his combo route and edge guarding shows that he can still be a viable tournament character. Especially with players like RaZe, Skylock, Coldweather and others proving that point too
Another thing with Lucas is that as you said, he is strong on offence at long, close and mid range, but on defence he is _baaad_ and he can't easily transition from a slight disadvantage in neutral back to true neutral then into an advantage state. He's a weird type of glass canon where he isn't really strong and fast but light, instead he is a force at most aspects of offence but once on the back foot his options and gameplan crumbles quickly.
Dude, my friend is a Pit main, and all I have to say is that Guardian Orbitars is the best down b in the game. It is literally a shield, IN THE AIR, and if you use it on the ground, it is a counter that allows you to hit Fsmash instead of a weak attack. Broken af
Another underrated character is Mii brawler People sleep on it just because its a mii, but this character is like Fox or better: -a strong juggle game. -a safe edgeguard option -All of his up specials are good kill options -a Nair which is as good as Link's (combo starter, escape option and sometimes a kill move) Like, some players like FirethePyro or Esam are exploring his potential, while Rizeasu Won a Major with him
@@lasercraft32 I think that's because of the stigma it has because it's a mii. Either it's hated because it's classified as broken, because of the surprise factor (you'll never know what moveset it has), or because "mIis R n0t r3al cHarAktherz!"
The character I mostly main in Ultimate is Pit because he sort of speaks to me on different levels. I like his design, his personality, his moveset (for the most part), I even really like his victory fan fare and series icon. There's so much of Pits character that like so much, and that's why I tend to gravitate towards him. But playing Pit can be frustrating because of is inconsistent hitboxes and poor air mobility. If those aspects of Pit were fixed, then I'd like playing him even more.
Ive mained Pit all of smash ultimate, but I ended up dropping him recently, not because I think the character is bad. He is still a lot of fun to play, but he doesnt fit what I think would be the playstyle I should have. I definitly suggest anyone to pick up Pit still tho!
Dark Pit / Pit have been the only characters that I feel I've actually clicked with. No other character even comes close to just how "right" they feel, even with all the inconsistencies
Duck hunt is so underrated that know one remembers the character, he's a good character it's just that he has a high skill ceiling which discourages a lot of people from playing him. He has so little representation and it doesn't help that raito has disappeared from tournaments.
His recovery is way too exploitable and his game plan is too easy to counter. He has some great confirms with drag down up air and disc but I just don't see him doing too well at the top level.
I want a video on Pokemon Trainer. Not sure if they're over or underrated, or just right. I just wanna see some good content with my 3 reptiles. That and a lot of yeet smash videos typically have the PT getting clipped.
Pokémon Trainer is cracked, but I won't ever deny that Pyra/Mythra caused his/her usage to steadily decline. Ddee still plays this character, but he now uses her a secondary for his new main, Enderman.
@@hambughrr8186 Unfortunate. It's hard to find a lot of good reps willing to stick with the char given I dislike Pythra due to both not being used to their physics yet and their VERY lacking up special horizontal movement. P.T. feels waaay more versatile for recovery.
Probably no one cares but here is my opinion on them: Lucas: you got it right, I also think he is underrated, he is just not really good in a meta where sword fighters and the like are omnipresent Wii-fit: broken ass specials, deep breathing is a comeback mechanic that you can access to at any moment, it’s so dumb, definitely underrated Pit/Dark Pit: I agree that they are a bit underrated, but I feel like it’s inevitable for characters with such boring moves and setups in a game where almost everyone has some sort of flashy/broken stuff about them Robin: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if their ressources didn’t run out and their mobility wasn’t so awful, they would be top 10 in the game easy, it’s like Sakurai tried as hard as he could to make Robin not as broken as in Fire emblem Awakening. Bowser Jr: it’s the only one I disagree with, I still think he is low-mid tier at best and a contender for bottom 10 in the game. You can sometimes get a little cheesed, but only you learn how to play around his setups, then the only thing he has going for him is his good side b and his decent kill power
I was a believer in Pac-Man since I started maining him 3 years into Ultimate and swore with my whole chest that he was underrated. Now he's unanimously top tier and almost unanimously top 10. Happy times.
really happy to see jr here. ive heard him called low tier and dismissed since the smash4 days, but he's still so fun to play and has so many ways to mix up gameplay. despite his competitive performance i find his matches so interesting and he's still one of my fav fighters. bonus points for the koopaling alts, this dude is fan service galore
Your biggest strength as a youtuber is being able to put into words what every high level smash player knows. We know because we put hundreds or even thousands of hours into the game and through our experiences we know everything your saying. I hope your able to do the same with other games. Maybe branch out into overwatch.
For another vid about why no one plays, I've got an idea for who: the Pits. The misconception as to why they're bad is because they lack killpower, but that's honestly not the case. In reality, the real reason is because they lack functional attacks(most egregiously, nair), have horrible air mobility(slow air speed and multiple, but low, jumps), a vulnerable straightforward up b, and an egregiously mismatched side B for an otherwise supposed to be nimble char. Honestly, for fixes, make his attacks function, first and foremost, but give him air speed, and replace his multiple jumps(which would be even better since he canonically can't fly) with a single bigger midair jump, and lastly, give him a different burst option side b that's weaker but quicker. Those changes would definitely turn him into an actual char, and a decent one at that. But one can only dream.
I don't know what people mean about his aerials not functioning... Forward Air and Up Air (at least in my experience) do perfectly fine at actually hitting the opponent. He also has a lot more range than people give him credit for, and is surprisingly fast.
IMO, Pit's NAir isn't even THAT disfunctional. Yes, its a bit small, but it is super rewarding on hit and 100% eclipses moves with similar problems, namely Belmonts' NAir and Banjo's NAir.
One character that didn’t appear here that I think really should’ve is Link. Insane combos that carry across the stage into death is scary enough, but he also has a ludicrous number of setups for traps and kill confirms, oppressive zoning between his 3 different projectiles (4 if Link is at 0%), and on top of that his N-Air is one of the best close-quarters tools in the game due to its combination of speed, safety, and huge hitbox, it even anti-zones because it just trucks through most projectiles. He doesn’t have a particularly great number of weaknesses either which is what holds back other characters with 0-death combos like Ice Climbers and Luigi. I think he’s got the potential to be on par with Kazuya/R.O.B, which I think are top 10. If a player with top level fundies put the time into mastering Link, he’d be terrifying
Really? I thought most people consider him high tier? His bomb from the first year was found to be an insane item to use, and link nair has been known to be amazing for a while. I’m pretty sure nobody thinks link is underrated,, most probably underate toon link as he’s seen as the worst link. Even then toon link ain’t that bad.
I would replace Kirby with Dark Pit personally. In my experience, Pit is only good against floatie characters However, even with Kirby’s faults, I think the stellar movement, edge guarding, and Up B makes Kirby are why Kirby is better than I’ve seen in most tier lists
On one hand, Kirby does surprisingly well against Palu and Joker because he low profiles a lot of their moves, and his tilts, NAir and Back Air are all amazing. On the downside, Kirby is very slow, has some of the worst specials in the entire game and is allergic to Aegis.
I personally think Dr. Mario is underated and not many people play him because its like Lucas and Ness, but he has pretty nifty combos and kill set ups
@@kreeperkiller4423 I understand the recovery issue, but I'm confused by the "horrible range" part... His hitboxes and attacks are the same size as Mario. Yet Mario is not low tier... how does he have horrible range? (Unless Mario has bad range too?) 😕 (Also... he doesn't need to be top tier, just not the lowest tier. He's underrated, not the literal best 🙂).
@@lasercraft32 Mario's one weakness is seen as his range but thats the thing it's his only "weakness". Not only does doc share that but he is slower, has a worse recovery, and his moves send at terrible angles which sometimes makes him worse than Mario at killing
Love the Lucas portion, boy has potential and I know it. I can’t wait to see the video on him, maybe I can learn from it as well. The point with sometimes it getting very awkward when fighting over the lack of tools is very accurate since it happens a lot. Also as a Lucas main I kinda have a mindset that Ness is just the better character, which kind of hurts my motivation to keep up with Lucas which I’m passionate in playing.
I completely see why he has potential. Maybe it's because of my bias playing him a lot recently or my love towards the EarthBound/Mother series, but looking at the arguments Vars was pointing out, I completely see it
Lucas isnt bad at all but I feel like hes way too technical and demanding in this game. Also the lack of Lucas players and how uncommon he is shows that people arent used to fighting him at all. There are characters who can get the job better then him with significantly less effort

Lucas - I definitely agree with Wii Fit - I kinda disagree but I think they are fine. It’s just matchup problems Pit/Dark Pit - I 100% agree. I believe that they can be a threat. Robin - I understand when people say that he sucks. I think they are not high tier or top but a solid mid. It’s either you have everything or nothing. Their matchup chart is okay (kinda bad). Bowser Jr - Hmmm…I agree that they are underrated. I’m just not sure where to place him.
I think another character that’s super underrated is banjo. The_hunter had a really good run with them at smash con and the character honestly has most of the tools you would need with lots of similarities to a character like link with some slight nerfs/reworks.
One of the main problems is that he has literally the worst damage output in the game aside from 0 aura Lucario and maybe SoPo. Almost none of his normals do over like 12% but he doesn't have long combos like Sheik. Also his base stats are really under tuned for a dlc character & he doesn't really have any horse$#@+ hitboxes like Joker or Snake. Also 2 of his aerials are some of the worst in their respective categories (dair & up air) & his Nair has the "mid tier Nair" hitbox of Pit & Belmont but doesn't have the combo potential or offstage kill power of those 2. Overall he is the only DLC character that was designed to be the same power level as the base game newcomers (most of which to this day are low tier or low-mid tier aside from the echo fighters) but also wasn't buffed in any meaningful way, like at all. Seriously I actually can't think of a single positive balance change aside from trying to fix multihit moves & adding literally 1% more damage to his dair or something stupid like that. He didn't even get that many useless changes, he was just ignored for most of the game's life. I didn't mean to devalue your opinion, Banjo just seems like a character that was fundamentally built to be a low tier
@@aronspiker72 I don't know why people keep saying Banjo's Up-Air is awful. It's very comparable to Mario's in many ways, it's just their awful mid-air jumps prevent them from taking full advantage of it. You put that move on a normal character & they'd push it.
Yea banjo is really good, he's probably the best ledge trapper, he has so many 2 frames, and cross ups, and a great ledge escape option, and 3 jumps. He's EATING if he back throws you lol. And then you just rack up damage in neutral till a tilt pushes them offstage. Very solid gameplan + 30% wonderwing gimmick lol
I would say that it has to do with not the movesets but the characters themselves because their movesets are actually really solid. After all, it is a crossover of the most renowned video game characters and a lot of players would want to play them before a Mii.
Apart from Megaman (who is finally starting to return to some of the results that he was always capable of), my pick for an underrated character is Toon Link. He is too quickly viewed as the awkward middle ground between Link and Young Link (or just a worse young link) when in fact he has a different gameplan and different strengths. Did you know Toon Link is faster than Young Link in the air and on the ground, has better frame data and range on most sword attacks, and is stronger on stray hits, with more reliable and consistent kill confirms. Problem is that his gameplan and strengths is a lot of running and camping while chucking bombs, and his combos aren't flashy so he isn't popular in the West. Despite all that, I would argue that Toon Link is the Zelda character with the most results, because there are 3-4 Japanese Toon Links (Sigma, Lvl 1, Manzoku) that consistenly get Top 16's, Top 8 and even wins over there, he just has nobody doing that in the West (similar to hero but on a bigger scale actually)
I like to said that most heavies are underrated as they are mostly seen as combo food and yet they have shown how good they are like Ridley, k Rool, donkey Kong heavies that are considered lower tier have shown to be really good
I think they key to this is you have to believe your character is a good pick to pick a character and dedicate so much time to them. Mains of top tiers will be validated by the tier lists every time. Mains of bottom tiers on the other hand, will always think the tier lists don't give their character of choice enough respect. The fairly balanced roster means even the worst character has a shot against the top of the line if you have an idea of what you're doing. I think nearly every character has some representation, even if it's very minimal
The thing with Lucas that annoys me is how many people compare him to Ness as if they're clones despite their wildly different movesets. Also, one thing Lucas has that you didnt mention are his surprisingly large disjoints, especially on moves like Fair and Ftilt (both of which are extraordinarily broken).
I think a big reason why Robin gets so overlooked is because there's so much misinformation and mistaken assumptions about the character. People find out about the run speed (2nd slowest in the game!?) and assume everything the character does must be unviably slow. They hear about weapon durability and assume everything must run out fast and take forever to come back to the point of crippling the character (actually only 10 seconds at most for the Levin Sword to regenerate, 12 for Thunder and Fire tomes, and a mere 6 for Elwind). This leads to Robin's weak points being overblown and their actual strengths being overlooked by nearly everyone who hasn't seen a competent one in action. Whole lot of the community's so dead set in assuming all Robin can do is run away slowly and spam projectiles until they run out that they completely overlook a lot of the stuff you brought up, and then some! Robin's air speed is smack dab in the exact center of the roster, and when combined with one of the earliest B-reverse cancels in the game (can bail out of a Thunder charge after just 7 frames), it makes their air movement really tricky. Robin can do swordfighter things because their Levin aerials actually have a bit more range than Marth and Lucina on average...except for Levin nair, which not only outranges every other nair in the game save Mega Man's, it outranges almost every _forward or back air_ in the game while still being fast for a sword aerial at Frame 7. Even Arcfire gets misunderstood--despite how it looks, it's actually not a zoning tool at all! It's a trapping move, and Robin can zone just fine with swordplay and Thunder spells. And that's not even getting into the high damaging safe-on-shield anti-rushdown cluster of pain that is Arcthunder. It's really nice to see another Smash UA-camr notice these things that so many other players don't give the time of day.
I would put Incineroar on this. While he is a much more polarized Ganondorf, he has unusually good frame data for a heavy, while Revenge gives him unparalleled kill power. While he is slow, the ever-present threat of Alolan Whip can deter low approaches, while his up-air can do a ton to opponents trying to approach to the air. His downtilt can two-frame, and his recovery is actually OK if you know how to use it well.
A char I've always liked playing is Mii Gunner. While the Miis do suffer from what Pokemon calls "4 moveslot syndrome" given the right combination as well as good knowledge of the combos and tricks you can do with them they can be a pain to fight. Sure they can be slow at times & they do rely on smash attacks to kill more often than not but they're good at getting to the point where an unprepared or careless foe can go down relatively quickly. They're also good at racking up damage too such as d-throw to up-air (up throw-up air works too but I find the former more consistent), Up air in general (which can also kill) or Flame Pillar into Charge Blast (which can also kill at a reasonable %), and Cannon Jump Kick while not having good horizontal movement & having decent vertical movement when timed right can meteor smash foes to their doom, with sair helping with vertical movement.
So I know he's talked about a lot, but I think, as a Sora main, he's even more underrated than people think. Alone, the idj Nair and fair loops are enough to put him in high a or s tier, because, while not always consistent, are waayyyyyyyy easier to do then, like, a wobble, and you can still get pretty easy infinite and confirms. Into fsmash, upsmash, idj upair, upb, bair, and I think at the highest level of play that shouldn't matter. It took me a week to be able to use them in games (1 to 2 to 3 loops per session). And my record is 18 loops in training mode. Each loop does like 15%, too, which, idk, it's a lot. I think just having the option is amazing BUT! He also has insane kill power from some stray hits. Bair starts killing normally at like 100-ish (stage dependent), upair about the same, maybe 120-ish? Then, his hitboxes linger for SOOOOOO LOOOOONG! And they aren't like Ike Nair big but they're also pretty quick and have a lot of hitstun -- and lead to the noooops!!! Up b kills REEEEALLY easily, too, and honestly people just play him too aggressively. He's best as a bait-punish character. You wait for them to attack -- maybe bait one -- and punish them with either a few good hits, or an insane-ass combo and leads them to 1 stray away from death. NOT ONLY THAT THOUGH! His fire -- comes out way too fast and combos, it's crazy. Ice, also, it freezes, does lots of shield damage, SHIELD POKES like 40% of the time, FREEZES, and is satisfying, it's so good. Also, using the spell is good for b-reversing, wave bouncing, AND stalling. Which, he doesn't use the movement a ton cuz he's not a movement character but it's good to have. And thundaga, while not great in neutral, can effortlessly end a stock in advantage, and is like a get out of jail free card in disadvantage -- which only adds to his insanely good recovery, since he can go anywhere just with side b and upb alone, not counting is double jump. He doesn't have good speed, but he has AMAZING movement when you learn it, he's very drifty in the air which can suck, but it also feels good when you learn it and can catch people off guard, especially when combined with stalling, and like, tomahawk grabs, false shield pressure. Speaking of shield pressure -- it sucks, but it's also good. From below platform, on some characters, if spaces right, uptilt pokes on a full shield. You can also use movement and upair to space a really nice bit of pressure and leaves him effectively unpunishable, and blizzard which melts through shields. Also, side b and lockon have some really wacky interactions when near the blast zones, so sometimes you can do some crazy shit with reversals or suicide kills. And his only weakness is some lag on a lot of his moves (even though you autocancel half the time), and him being light. Very light, but still reeeeally good. I don't think he deserves to be pushed off, and like you said in your why no one plays about him, he just needs time. I think he can be the only character besides Luigi that has consistent, good, practical 0-deaths.
Very good video! I want to see a "Why nobody plays Marth" video. He's definitely not as underrated as the characters you listed, but he's VERY close (like, top 10 underrated). I already know why people don't want to play him (and, no it's not just 'inconsistent tippers'), but I seriously want to ramble on and on about it while staying on topic.
If Lucina broke the camel's back regarding Marth's popularity in Smash Ultimate, then Pyra and Mythra pissed on the camel's corpse and uploaded the video to Instagram.
Being lowtier or "bad" doesn't necessarily mean they can't do well. These characters are powerful and will kill people, but there are characters in the roster that simply do their jobs better. Plenty of other fighting games have this going on too, where some characters are arguably mid from an effectiveness standpoint, but others in the roster just can access their win condition more easily and/or have more favorable matchup spreads. Thus actually pretty good characters just end up near or at the bottom, even though they can work quite well. Everyone you mentioned I agree are quite underrated. However I think Robin's issues do hold them back greatly, despite having some powerful things like Levin sword and Thoron. They are an objectively worse version of their Sm4sh iteration and just feel very slow and overdesigned with resource limitation. With already being kinda botched on release they only got power crept even harder by DLC. While the others are actually kinda underrated, Robin is just plain bad. But their best players know how to use them well.
I too, think both of those characters are underrated, but I can also identify another reason for their low usage that didn't get mentioned in this video: Underdogs Gaming. This channel is a collaboration between 4 UA-camrs known as Little Z, HopCat, Poppt1 and Director Cogger, all of whom have been pulling in lots of views for SmashTubers, thanks to the former three men having their own channels to draw in even more views. Lucas and Robin getting next to no love on Underdogs Gaming plays a subtle, but massive role in why people who are decently casual tend to avoid them, albeit for totally different reasons. Little Z used to play Lucas in Smash 4, but in Ultimate, they changed his combo routes by nerfing his Down Throw and changing how footstools work, both of which caused him to drop the character. As for Robin, he/she is the most neglected character on Underdogs Gaming, in fact, they only selected him/her ONCE outside of Random or silly challenge videos. To make things even worse, HopCat made a video ranking Smash characters based on how suitable they were for a content creator to main, and he outright said that he would've put Robin in the lowest tier if Female Robin didn't have a Belle Delphine costume.
Jr can be such a dangerous character if wielded by the right player, our local scene has a great Jr player (Young Eevey), and he made me realize how great the character is

As a Jr. Main who causes hell for my friends in arenas (albeit the online meta sucks cuz of the crappy netcode) it feels nice to hear the turtle boi get his respect because his tool kit and semi rushdown playstyle is very fun and can be rewarding ^__^
Kirby is definitely an underrated character. His combo game is really good, his damage and kill power are great, an impressive edgeguard ability, his small size mixed with his ability to hurt box shift and dodge most attacks makes him very difficult to hit, his recovery has lots of range and his copy abilities makes him even more versatile. Too bad his flaws are equally as prominent as his strengths... He's not High or Top Tier, but definitely not Low imo. Solid mid tier 👌
If Kirby isn't low tier, then there's like 5 characters in this game that are low tier, and at that point, that's just bottom tier and mid tier is low tier.
I mean I wouldn't say they are under-rated, everyone besides like Ganon and Mac are viable in this game. And they all have serious flaws, in a game with characters that have insane strengths and minimal flaws. In a game where Lucina, an essentially perfect character, is arguably not top ten, someone has to be low tier. Basically, it's all relative
Lucario? Really? The homie is OVERrated. It’s been an average of B+ tier or something, even reaching in the As in Sm4sh. I’m always surprised how high my boi ranks, considering how hard he is to play & win with sometimes. Though I guess the skill cap for him is incredibly high, with many unique combos that take full on days to practice and get consistently, if you play a lot

Robin appears to have an insanely high skill gap. There are so many factors to into consideration. You would need to be a patient genius to use him correctly.

I agree with you on Bowser Jr. I started playing him recently, and even if I don't win with him, i still have so much fun. He has a lot of strengths that I think don't get talked about enough like his aerial combos and long range pressure. Most people don't want to give him the time of day because he's bowser jr.
As a Lucas main since Brawl, it's nice to see him here. There's a few things he's needed only to go untouched for the second half of Ultimate's patches (nair and dair could be a bit more consistent for example, and you can still survive PKT2 at over 120% while Ness' kills rather low), but he doesn't get enough credit. I'm excited for his why no one plays video.
So happy to see Wii Fit Trainer on here. They're one of my favorites. Their moves feel so satisfying to land. Not to mention the entertainment value of all the whistle blowing and little exercise quotes. Lol
Edit: Yes. Robin too. Once I found out Robin had a pretty solid recovery, my spike-happy self was real invested. Anyone I can force to recover from below is gonna have me coming down there to attempt a down air since I know that as long as I have the green tome ready I can up-b back to stage from a pretty long ways.
One of the things to keep in mind about Ultimate is that we really don't have any "bad" characters in the sense that they don't work or can't function in the competitive environment, just bad relative to what we think of as good. I don't think we have any underrated characters so much as we have underplayed characters given that we know they are good.
Like I personally think Wii Fit is at least as good as Falcon, but I can't justify placing her that high given results.
I think Robin in HDR is almost perfect. I didn't think a float using wind tome was something I always wanted on the character, but here we are. Also books coming back faster but not so fast that your aerials are always godlike. It really is good design philosophy.
Lucario is definitely underrate imo. He’s got SO many mixups and he has a lot that’s safe on shield and Aura Sphere is REALLY good at catching landings and an underrated camping tool imo.
Looks like someone understands he's the character I'd recommend any novice player start with. He literally gets better the more you suck in a match

rosa is underated imo. she can do cool stuff with her luma desync’s and its so satisfying killing your opponent from afar. i also like rosa as a character in general. she is a hard character to learn though.

Piranha plant is so underated. I was maining top tiers cause the seemed best for so long, until I got plant playing random with a friend, and fell in love with his trapping and edge guarding. Also dair up smash is the most satisfying kill confirm in the game, I love it.

I would put Banjo-Kazooie on this. Attention on the pair almost immediately died out because they don't have any absurd DLC gimmicks, but they've still got a lot of great on them.
- They have an up close boxing game not too far from being on par with someone like Mario in terms of speed, with standouts being jab, ftilt, up and down smash
-The 11th fastest dash speed in the game
-Recovery which can freely be mixed up due to not putting into free fall, adding on to infinite recovery akin to Snake C4
-The same weight as R.O.B. and Snake
-Two projectiles that lead into combos, both of which are also good fallbacks to spam if needed.
-Some of the easiest to land 2-Framing tools in the game with Down Tilt and Down Smash, along with FSmash and Wonderwing being absurdly early killing 2-Frames.
-Basically FREE recovery at least 5 times a stock if needed.
-A killing back throw and a down throw that at high percents can lead into 50/50 kills
-Dr. Mario's Forward Air that autocancels off a short hop
-And the one that I think most people forget. Banjo-Kazooie is a swordie. In all moves but dash and up tilt, Kazooie has no hurtbox.
I don't think Banjo-Kazooie is top tier, hell I don't know if even low high tier but I can't fathom people putting them in bottom 10 bottom 20.
He does like literally no damage & lack any real combos and that infinite recovery thing has been proven to be impractical in actual matches both due to an opponent being able to interrupt you during the egg catch setups & the timing of everything being within like a 5 frame window for each step because you have to use down b at the right time, move to the exact right position to Z-Catch it without airdodging or using you double jump, and then use your double jump immediately to get blown up in such a way that you actually gain enough height with it. Doing it once offstage is somewhat reasonable, but any more than that in a row is prettymuch humanly unviable due to having less time to initially start the sequence of events
The only redeeming move for banjo is wonderwing and you only get 5 of them.
@@codyholley Banjo needs to be very patient and attack when the opponent makes a mistake or be campy if Banjo can't find an opening. He's kinda like Sonic in a sense.
In Banjo Tooie, boss fights are about running away from the bosses until they expose themselves. It also take about 6 mins to beat the Hag 1 in Banjo Tooie as well.
Also Banjo's nair can sometimes damage characters on shield.
One trick I discovered is that Banjo can edge guard with nair, and if Shockspring jump isn't enough he can use Wonderwing to make it back on stage.

As a pit main I agree with all of it, even though pits have some well known bad hit boxes, his combo route and edge guarding shows that he can still be a viable tournament character. Especially with players like RaZe, Skylock, Coldweather and others proving that point too
He also does well against Steve, you just jump shoot arrow and hook it over the wall that the Steve puts up makes materials a pain

Another thing with Lucas is that as you said, he is strong on offence at long, close and mid range, but on defence he is _baaad_ and he can't easily transition from a slight disadvantage in neutral back to true neutral then into an advantage state. He's a weird type of glass canon where he isn't really strong and fast but light, instead he is a force at most aspects of offence but once on the back foot his options and gameplan crumbles quickly.

Dude, my friend is a Pit main, and all I have to say is that Guardian Orbitars is the best down b in the game. It is literally a shield, IN THE AIR, and if you use it on the ground, it is a counter that allows you to hit Fsmash instead of a weak attack. Broken af

-a strong juggle game.
-a safe edgeguard option
-All of his up specials are good kill options
-a Nair which is as good as Link's (combo starter, escape option and sometimes a kill move)
Like, some players like FirethePyro or Esam are exploring his potential, while Rizeasu Won a Major with him
Brawler is nightmarishly fast, and really really strong. I'm honestly surprised nobody uses them, they feel like Fox on steroids.

I love watching smash more when characters are more random like pit vs mr Mario. Than repetitive like rob vs hero
The character I mostly main in Ultimate is Pit because he sort of speaks to me on different levels. I like his design, his personality, his moveset (for the most part), I even really like his victory fan fare and series icon. There's so much of Pits character that like so much, and that's why I tend to gravitate towards him. But playing Pit can be frustrating because of is inconsistent hitboxes and poor air mobility. If those aspects of Pit were fixed, then I'd like playing him even more.
Deadass if they just fixed either his inconsistent hit boxes or his air mobility (doesnt have to be both) he would be such a fluid character.
Ive mained Pit all of smash ultimate, but I ended up dropping him recently, not because I think the character is bad. He is still a lot of fun to play, but he doesnt fit what I think would be the playstyle I should have. I definitly suggest anyone to pick up Pit still tho!

Duck hunt is so underrated that know one remembers the character, he's a good character it's just that he has a high skill ceiling which discourages a lot of people from playing him. He has so little representation and it doesn't help that raito has disappeared from tournaments.

His recovery is way too exploitable and his game plan is too easy to counter. He has some great confirms with drag down up air and disc but I just don't see him doing too well at the top level.

Pokémon Trainer is cracked, but I won't ever deny that Pyra/Mythra caused his/her usage to steadily decline. Ddee still plays this character, but he now uses her a secondary for his new main, Enderman.

Probably no one cares but here is my opinion on them:
Lucas: you got it right, I also think he is underrated, he is just not really good in a meta where sword fighters and the like are omnipresent
Wii-fit: broken ass specials, deep breathing is a comeback mechanic that you can access to at any moment, it’s so dumb, definitely underrated
Pit/Dark Pit: I agree that they are a bit underrated, but I feel like it’s inevitable for characters with such boring moves and setups in a game where almost everyone has some sort of flashy/broken stuff about them
Robin: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if their ressources didn’t run out and their mobility wasn’t so awful, they would be top 10 in the game easy, it’s like Sakurai tried as hard as he could to make Robin not as broken as in Fire emblem Awakening.
Bowser Jr: it’s the only one I disagree with, I still think he is low-mid tier at best and a contender for bottom 10 in the game. You can sometimes get a little cheesed, but only you learn how to play around his setups, then the only thing he has going for him is his good side b and his decent kill power

For another vid about why no one plays, I've got an idea for who: the Pits. The misconception as to why they're bad is because they lack killpower, but that's honestly not the case. In reality, the real reason is because they lack functional attacks(most egregiously, nair), have horrible air mobility(slow air speed and multiple, but low, jumps), a vulnerable straightforward up b, and an egregiously mismatched side B for an otherwise supposed to be nimble char.
Honestly, for fixes, make his attacks function, first and foremost, but give him air speed, and replace his multiple jumps(which would be even better since he canonically can't fly) with a single bigger midair jump, and lastly, give him a different burst option side b that's weaker but quicker. Those changes would definitely turn him into an actual char, and a decent one at that. But one can only dream.
I don't know what people mean about his aerials not functioning... Forward Air and Up Air (at least in my experience) do perfectly fine at actually hitting the opponent. He also has a lot more range than people give him credit for, and is surprisingly fast.

IMO, Pit's NAir isn't even THAT disfunctional. Yes, its a bit small, but it is super rewarding on hit and 100% eclipses moves with similar problems, namely Belmonts' NAir and Banjo's NAir.

One character that didn’t appear here that I think really should’ve is Link. Insane combos that carry across the stage into death is scary enough, but he also has a ludicrous number of setups for traps and kill confirms, oppressive zoning between his 3 different projectiles (4 if Link is at 0%), and on top of that his N-Air is one of the best close-quarters tools in the game due to its combination of speed, safety, and huge hitbox, it even anti-zones because it just trucks through most projectiles. He doesn’t have a particularly great number of weaknesses either which is what holds back other characters with 0-death combos like Ice Climbers and Luigi. I think he’s got the potential to be on par with Kazuya/R.O.B, which I think are top 10. If a player with top level fundies put the time into mastering Link, he’d be terrifying
Really? I thought most people consider him high tier? His bomb from the first year was found to be an insane item to use, and link nair has been known to be amazing for a while. I’m pretty sure nobody thinks link is underrated,, most probably underate toon link as he’s seen as the worst link. Even then toon link ain’t that bad.

I would replace Kirby with Dark Pit personally. In my experience, Pit is only good against floatie characters However, even with Kirby’s faults, I think the stellar movement, edge guarding, and Up B makes Kirby are why Kirby is better than I’ve seen in most tier lists
In my experience Kirby's Up-B is super easy to punish. Its like Cloud's but slower.
On one hand, Kirby does surprisingly well against Palu and Joker because he low profiles a lot of their moves, and his tilts, NAir and Back Air are all amazing. On the downside, Kirby is very slow, has some of the worst specials in the entire game and is allergic to Aegis.

Love the Lucas portion, boy has potential and I know it. I can’t wait to see the video on him, maybe I can learn from it as well. The point with sometimes it getting very awkward when fighting over the lack of tools is very accurate since it happens a lot. Also as a Lucas main I kinda have a mindset that Ness is just the better character, which kind of hurts my motivation to keep up with Lucas which I’m passionate in playing.
I completely see why he has potential. Maybe it's because of my bias playing him a lot recently or my love towards the EarthBound/Mother series, but looking at the arguments Vars was pointing out, I completely see it

Lucas isnt bad at all but I feel like hes way too technical and demanding in this game. Also the lack of Lucas players and how uncommon he is shows that people arent used to fighting him at all. There are characters who can get the job better then him with significantly less effort
Very technical definitely, can argue he has a even or slightly favorable matchup to Steve. Underrated due to better recovery options and range, excellent edge guarding, etc

I think another character that’s super underrated is banjo. The_hunter had a really good run with them at smash con and the character honestly has most of the tools you would need with lots of similarities to a character like link with some slight nerfs/reworks.
One of the main problems is that he has literally the worst damage output in the game aside from 0 aura Lucario and maybe SoPo. Almost none of his normals do over like 12% but he doesn't have long combos like Sheik. Also his base stats are really under tuned for a dlc character & he doesn't really have any horse$#@+ hitboxes like Joker or Snake. Also 2 of his aerials are some of the worst in their respective categories (dair & up air) & his Nair has the "mid tier Nair" hitbox of Pit & Belmont but doesn't have the combo potential or offstage kill power of those 2. Overall he is the only DLC character that was designed to be the same power level as the base game newcomers (most of which to this day are low tier or low-mid tier aside from the echo fighters) but also wasn't buffed in any meaningful way, like at all. Seriously I actually can't think of a single positive balance change aside from trying to fix multihit moves & adding literally 1% more damage to his dair or something stupid like that. He didn't even get that many useless changes, he was just ignored for most of the game's life. I didn't mean to devalue your opinion, Banjo just seems like a character that was fundamentally built to be a low tier

Yea banjo is really good, he's probably the best ledge trapper, he has so many 2 frames, and cross ups, and a great ledge escape option, and 3 jumps. He's EATING if he back throws you lol. And then you just rack up damage in neutral till a tilt pushes them offstage. Very solid gameplan + 30% wonderwing gimmick lol

I would say that it has to do with not the movesets but the characters themselves because their movesets are actually really solid. After all, it is a crossover of the most renowned video game characters and a lot of players would want to play them before a Mii.

Apart from Megaman (who is finally starting to return to some of the results that he was always capable of), my pick for an underrated character is Toon Link. He is too quickly viewed as the awkward middle ground between Link and Young Link (or just a worse young link) when in fact he has a different gameplan and different strengths. Did you know Toon Link is faster than Young Link in the air and on the ground, has better frame data and range on most sword attacks, and is stronger on stray hits, with more reliable and consistent kill confirms.
Problem is that his gameplan and strengths is a lot of running and camping while chucking bombs, and his combos aren't flashy so he isn't popular in the West. Despite all that, I would argue that Toon Link is the Zelda character with the most results, because there are 3-4 Japanese Toon Links (Sigma, Lvl 1, Manzoku) that consistenly get Top 16's, Top 8 and even wins over there, he just has nobody doing that in the West (similar to hero but on a bigger scale actually)
I like to said that most heavies are underrated as they are mostly seen as combo food and yet they have shown how good they are like Ridley, k Rool, donkey Kong heavies that are considered lower tier have shown to be really good

I think they key to this is you have to believe your character is a good pick to pick a character and dedicate so much time to them.
Mains of top tiers will be validated by the tier lists every time.
Mains of bottom tiers on the other hand, will always think the tier lists don't give their character of choice enough respect.
The fairly balanced roster means even the worst character has a shot against the top of the line if you have an idea of what you're doing. I think nearly every character has some representation, even if it's very minimal
The Radiant Dawn basecamp music works pretty well for a background filler (which it was obviously designed to do.)
The thing with Lucas that annoys me is how many people compare him to Ness as if they're clones despite their wildly different movesets.
Also, one thing Lucas has that you didnt mention are his surprisingly large disjoints, especially on moves like Fair and Ftilt (both of which are extraordinarily broken).
I use like all the Fire Emblem characters, and I do agree on Robin for sure
I think a big reason why Robin gets so overlooked is because there's so much misinformation and mistaken assumptions about the character. People find out about the run speed (2nd slowest in the game!?) and assume everything the character does must be unviably slow. They hear about weapon durability and assume everything must run out fast and take forever to come back to the point of crippling the character (actually only 10 seconds at most for the Levin Sword to regenerate, 12 for Thunder and Fire tomes, and a mere 6 for Elwind). This leads to Robin's weak points being overblown and their actual strengths being overlooked by nearly everyone who hasn't seen a competent one in action.
Whole lot of the community's so dead set in assuming all Robin can do is run away slowly and spam projectiles until they run out that they completely overlook a lot of the stuff you brought up, and then some! Robin's air speed is smack dab in the exact center of the roster, and when combined with one of the earliest B-reverse cancels in the game (can bail out of a Thunder charge after just 7 frames), it makes their air movement really tricky. Robin can do swordfighter things because their Levin aerials actually have a bit more range than Marth and Lucina on average...except for Levin nair, which not only outranges every other nair in the game save Mega Man's, it outranges almost every _forward or back air_ in the game while still being fast for a sword aerial at Frame 7. Even Arcfire gets misunderstood--despite how it looks, it's actually not a zoning tool at all! It's a trapping move, and Robin can zone just fine with swordplay and Thunder spells. And that's not even getting into the high damaging safe-on-shield anti-rushdown cluster of pain that is Arcthunder.
It's really nice to see another Smash UA-camr notice these things that so many other players don't give the time of day.
I would put Incineroar on this. While he is a much more polarized Ganondorf, he has unusually good frame data for a heavy, while Revenge gives him unparalleled kill power. While he is slow, the ever-present threat of Alolan Whip can deter low approaches, while his up-air can do a ton to opponents trying to approach to the air. His downtilt can two-frame, and his recovery is actually OK if you know how to use it well.
Banjo. Heavy, side b to get back to ledge, grenade for damage + combos into WW. Eggs can really trip people up if your smooth with them.
A char I've always liked playing is Mii Gunner. While the Miis do suffer from what Pokemon calls "4 moveslot syndrome" given the right combination as well as good knowledge of the combos and tricks you can do with them they can be a pain to fight. Sure they can be slow at times & they do rely on smash attacks to kill more often than not but they're good at getting to the point where an unprepared or careless foe can go down relatively quickly.
They're also good at racking up damage too such as d-throw to up-air (up throw-up air works too but I find the former more consistent), Up air in general (which can also kill) or Flame Pillar into Charge Blast (which can also kill at a reasonable %), and Cannon Jump Kick while not having good horizontal movement & having decent vertical movement when timed right can meteor smash foes to their doom, with sair helping with vertical movement.
So I know he's talked about a lot, but I think, as a Sora main, he's even more underrated than people think. Alone, the idj Nair and fair loops are enough to put him in high a or s tier, because, while not always consistent, are waayyyyyyyy easier to do then, like, a wobble, and you can still get pretty easy infinite and confirms. Into fsmash, upsmash, idj upair, upb, bair, and I think at the highest level of play that shouldn't matter. It took me a week to be able to use them in games (1 to 2 to 3 loops per session). And my record is 18 loops in training mode. Each loop does like 15%, too, which, idk, it's a lot. I think just having the option is amazing
BUT! He also has insane kill power from some stray hits. Bair starts killing normally at like 100-ish (stage dependent), upair about the same, maybe 120-ish? Then, his hitboxes linger for SOOOOOO LOOOOONG! And they aren't like Ike Nair big but they're also pretty quick and have a lot of hitstun -- and lead to the noooops!!! Up b kills REEEEALLY easily, too, and honestly people just play him too aggressively. He's best as a bait-punish character. You wait for them to attack -- maybe bait one -- and punish them with either a few good hits, or an insane-ass combo and leads them to 1 stray away from death.
NOT ONLY THAT THOUGH! His fire -- comes out way too fast and combos, it's crazy. Ice, also, it freezes, does lots of shield damage, SHIELD POKES like 40% of the time, FREEZES, and is satisfying, it's so good. Also, using the spell is good for b-reversing, wave bouncing, AND stalling. Which, he doesn't use the movement a ton cuz he's not a movement character but it's good to have. And thundaga, while not great in neutral, can effortlessly end a stock in advantage, and is like a get out of jail free card in disadvantage -- which only adds to his insanely good recovery, since he can go anywhere just with side b and upb alone, not counting is double jump.
He doesn't have good speed, but he has AMAZING movement when you learn it, he's very drifty in the air which can suck, but it also feels good when you learn it and can catch people off guard, especially when combined with stalling, and like, tomahawk grabs, false shield pressure.
Speaking of shield pressure -- it sucks, but it's also good. From below platform, on some characters, if spaces right, uptilt pokes on a full shield. You can also use movement and upair to space a really nice bit of pressure and leaves him effectively unpunishable, and blizzard which melts through shields. Also, side b and lockon have some really wacky interactions when near the blast zones, so sometimes you can do some crazy shit with reversals or suicide kills.
And his only weakness is some lag on a lot of his moves (even though you autocancel half the time), and him being light. Very light, but still reeeeally good. I don't think he deserves to be pushed off, and like you said in your why no one plays about him, he just needs time.
I think he can be the only character besides Luigi that has consistent, good, practical 0-deaths.
Very good video! I want to see a "Why nobody plays Marth" video. He's definitely not as underrated as the characters you listed, but he's VERY close (like, top 10 underrated). I already know why people don't want to play him (and, no it's not just 'inconsistent tippers'), but I seriously want to ramble on and on about it while staying on topic.

Yeah, I often main some of these underrated characters. Including the ones Vars didn’t mention in the video.
Being lowtier or "bad" doesn't necessarily mean they can't do well. These characters are powerful and will kill people, but there are characters in the roster that simply do their jobs better. Plenty of other fighting games have this going on too, where some characters are arguably mid from an effectiveness standpoint, but others in the roster just can access their win condition more easily and/or have more favorable matchup spreads. Thus actually pretty good characters just end up near or at the bottom, even though they can work quite well.
Everyone you mentioned I agree are quite underrated. However I think Robin's issues do hold them back greatly, despite having some powerful things like Levin sword and Thoron. They are an objectively worse version of their Sm4sh iteration and just feel very slow and overdesigned with resource limitation. With already being kinda botched on release they only got power crept even harder by DLC. While the others are actually kinda underrated, Robin is just plain bad. But their best players know how to use them well.
When i saw the word underrated and see lucas and robin i smile greatly. More people need to try them.
I too, think both of those characters are underrated, but I can also identify another reason for their low usage that didn't get mentioned in this video: Underdogs Gaming. This channel is a collaboration between 4 UA-camrs known as Little Z, HopCat, Poppt1 and Director Cogger, all of whom have been pulling in lots of views for SmashTubers, thanks to the former three men having their own channels to draw in even more views.
Lucas and Robin getting next to no love on Underdogs Gaming plays a subtle, but massive role in why people who are decently casual tend to avoid them, albeit for totally different reasons. Little Z used to play Lucas in Smash 4, but in Ultimate, they changed his combo routes by nerfing his Down Throw and changing how footstools work, both of which caused him to drop the character. As for Robin, he/she is the most neglected character on Underdogs Gaming, in fact, they only selected him/her ONCE outside of Random or silly challenge videos. To make things even worse, HopCat made a video ranking Smash characters based on how suitable they were for a content creator to main, and he outright said that he would've put Robin in the lowest tier if Female Robin didn't have a Belle Delphine costume.
Jr can be such a dangerous character if wielded by the right player, our local scene has a great Jr player (Young Eevey), and he made me realize how great the character is

Kinda interesting how I used to play a lot of these characters a ton in sm4sh. I still occasionally play them today, but maybe I’ll try picking them up again now
As a Jr. Main who causes hell for my friends in arenas (albeit the online meta sucks cuz of the crappy netcode) it feels nice to hear the turtle boi get his respect because his tool kit and semi rushdown playstyle is very fun and can be rewarding ^__^
Kirby is definitely an underrated character. His combo game is really good, his damage and kill power are great, an impressive edgeguard ability, his small size mixed with his ability to hurt box shift and dodge most attacks makes him very difficult to hit, his recovery has lots of range and his copy abilities makes him even more versatile. Too bad his flaws are equally as prominent as his strengths... He's not High or Top Tier, but definitely not Low imo. Solid mid tier 👌
If Kirby isn't low tier, then there's like 5 characters in this game that are low tier, and at that point, that's just bottom tier and mid tier is low tier.

And they all have serious flaws, in a game with characters that have insane strengths and minimal flaws. Lucario? Really? The homie is OVERrated. It’s been an average of B+ tier or something, even reaching in the As in Sm4sh. I’m always surprised how high my boi ranks, considering how hard he is to play & win with sometimes. Though I guess the skill cap for him is incredibly high, with many unique combos that take full on days to practice and get consistently, if you play a lot
