      ladycroft214 I was 9 years old, I was scared of everything! Lol. Luckily TR1 was my last game, so I was older. Otherwise I'd die. ;)

      Forty fathoms done it for me. The creepiness of trying to swim away from the sharks and not drown at the same time was very stressful lol

    This is my favorite level in TR2. Huge and challenging, full of atmosphere and suspense, it's one of the best levels in the game.

    Absolute nightmare of a level.. You can get lost even with a map.. But that's the case with a lot of tr2 levels.. Just finished the mainly underwater levels and they are soooooo mazelike

    Perfect demo of how to play the game by someone who is very good at it. I like how you use the look key to show the viewer around the room a bit.
    Not played stupidly fast making it hard to follow but not painfully slow either. The balance is just right.

    The level design in this is so surreal, almost like some theatre of The unconcious with like trap doors, and weird water in front of The scene, strange secret comparments and over all, blocky arcitecture repeating The same folds. What is this place, a nightmare if you Ask me 😂

    I really appreciate your let’s play of this game because it feels natural. You take the time to look around and take in your surroundings.
    Also I am playing this level right now and I went a different way. I flipped the switch to open the hatch on the roof, but I managed to get into the glass pit without dying. I am able to progress, and got the secret sooner. But idk if that path was the right move. 😅

    Without any walkthroughs, I passed Opera House by simply long way running and jumped into the far balcony on the left, then got on the plane. without killing a lot, and not all secrets found, stucked in Level 5. Then, printed walkthroughs, and replayed all again until finished the game, but less fun reading walkthroughs, no UA-cam 1998-1999. Before year 1999. Wong

    This was a wacky ass opera house. The structure made no sense. I know it's supposed to be old and falling apart, but still.....

      The reason why the structures made hardly sense was because of the tech's limitations per level. You can still have a good game as long as the story and atmosphere is there which is why these older Tomb Raider's hold up. Heck I'd still play this game even if it were remade. Would love to explore a fully, falling apart opera house with henchmen wielding weapons but it would have to maintain the tone, the original had like faded carpet textures, dark cooridors etc...

      It certainly was, Sam. However, those first 5 TR games could easily take many weeks to complete. Sadly, games like Shadow can be completed in a few short hours. Graphics are so much better, but it would be so nice to get a new TR game where the levels took a good 2 or 3 hours to complete.

      These early Tomb Raider games might be graphically inferior, but dang did they have re-play-ability as well as a story. I hope Nicobass, and her supporting designers are continuing the un-official remake of Tomb Raider 2. The demo of the first level was soooo dang good and I can not even FATHOM what the other levels would look like. I'd would like to imagine that in the remake you could have 2 entrances to the Oprea House:
      1: Would be through the top of the roof or that dome like structure which would take you to center isles
      2: Through a window and airducts that would lead you to the Control Room to raise the curtains.

    Ah the days when Tomb Raider games were really challenging. TR 2 took me weeks to complete - TR 4 was longer! People don't have the patience to work things out now and spend multiple hours on a single level, preferring instead to refer to walkthroughs to complete a game as quickly as possible.

    looking back, I don't see how I or anyone else could find these small simplistic levels so damn challenging. used to think the levels were huge, and me and my sister needed a walkthrough to beat the game. video games really broadens your perspective over time.

      Genuinely asking. What modern triple A game with its quest markers and automatically filling maps is this complex to navigate and big, while also having every platform and layer being interactable? Genuinely? Because aside from dark souls i have played a dozen triple A games where all the “openness” is just meaningless fluff, a pretty backdrop to make you feel like you’re in a bigger world than you actually are, where you’re set on a linear path with no need to understand the level layout, you just walk to and fro and get hints from your NPC companions.
      And open worlds don’t count because those aren’t actually levels, navigation isn’t hard, it’s arbitrary, you go in any direction and always find something, you can’t get lost because it’s designed not to lose you, to always “entertain” you
      Comments like this always come off as ignorant, i’m a zoomer who used to look down on older games till i saw tomb raider and it opened my eyes to how something can be so big and complex from so long ago, and still be better designed than modern games. The only reason you think it’s simple, is because you’ve played through it already, that’s hindsight 20/20 and is meaningless as shit because you can apply that to every single videogame. It doesn’t change the fact that the level is fundementally complex, huge, and hard to navigate.

      @@jankengu3428 The thing is that the levels aren't big. If you'd "noclip" and zoom out you'd probably be surprised at how small they are. The opera house is just the starting area, the dome, and then the "auditorium" with the connecting basement and make-up area. They did an awesome job however at making it *seem* big by making the goal of each level completely obscured and unclear, but it's still an illusion of size. The levels aren't large by any modern standard, and TR2 actually was pretty linear, especially compared to TR3. There isn't any way to get lost really, just stuck because you don't know what to do.
      I replayed it for the first time since childhood a couple of years ago with no clear memory of what to do or where to go, and I finished it in 12,5 hours with no help. Now I finish it in 3,5 hours, which is testament to how small it actually is. Never said it's an *easy* game the first time around, I'm merely a bit surprised at how the levels seem to have shrunk in my older days, as we used to think they were absolutely huge in 1997.

      @Gonken88 You could say this about ANY game, if you no clip through any game you'll realize, how small it is, except those games actually ARE illusions of choice because they due tend to be linear and restricted environments that don't interconnect.
      Also find it funny how you still have yet to mention a modern game as big or complex as Classic Tomb Raider and how you're STILL using a hindsight argument as a crutch when you can go on gaming forums and here DOZENS of people talk about how short a game really is when they do it over literally 3 times lmao, you could say this about Hollow Knight which is LITERALLY like a 40 hour game on average, or 90% of open world games since the world is literally fluff to play around in. You've still yet to make a point or argument. That actually matters to Tomb Raider.
      Also just because TR2 can be more linear that TR3, doesn't mean it's linear overall, The levels, I'll even use Venice specifically, can be opened up in a multitude of orders and can even have certain things skipped entirely (like the boat) yes, you need to open certain things absolutely, but the level is open so you can do them non linearly and put of order. Other levels like Opera House may be more linear, but it doesn't change their complexity and how layered and interconnected they can be, especially compared to modern games, which you still haven't mentioned which match it btw.
      Also do you not realize "getting lost" is literally not knowing what to do to get to where to go? This is like saying "actually a forest isn't that big and confusing, it's just that the forest is tricking you by obscuring your vision of the sky and looking all the same, it's just a trick, just an illusion!" Yeah...that's the point of exploration, figuring out how to orient yourself and get through something confusing or unclear...relative to your circumstances.
      Also just want to re-emphasize that you've still yet to actually mention any game that matches classic Tomb Raider's size or complexity. And still relied on a hindsight argument I already addressed in the first response...lol

      @@jankengu3428 Ok, I don't know if you have autism and I insulted you because you think this game was exceptionally hard or something, or it's just the typical Gen-Z-I-can't-take-having-my-opinion-refuted-BS, but there is absolutely no reason for any sane person to make such big deal out of this as you're doing.
      You're literally ackowledging most of everything I've said and then you split hairs about it in some desperate attempt at making a point as if you're actually pissed off about this, while talking about whether a game from 1997 is "large" or have complex levels when an amateur speedrunner can finish it in 3,5 hours. It's not large, it's not complex, and whether other games are the same or not, it doesn't change anything regarding this particular game. It is linear - there's only one way of completing the levels, they start in one end and finish at the other, and there's hardly any backtracking to speak of sake for perhaps wreck of the Maria Doria. And how you define "getting lost" is just that; a matter of definition - it doesn't change the fact that worst case scenario is that you'll be running around the same three or four small areas for hours wondering what to do. We called it getting stuck in the old days when you were still roaming your dad's sack.
      As for mentioning a game that is bigger than Tomb Raider, I didn't take that seriously as you're setting the rules for what type games can be mentioned so it fits your agenda while games like this aren't made anymore (mostly because they're too small and simplistic and because with youtube, people would just look up what to do when stuck and they'd finish the game in 5 hours). *Your* personal definition of what games fit the bill or what is "fluff" doesn't apply to real life, you don't get to set the rules. You just come off as spoiled with a really shitty attitude, and I've already speculated as to why that might be. But, bigger games: Uncharted 1-4, Dead space, Metal gear solid 3 or Peace walker. More complex games: Silent hill 4, Grim fandango, Escape from monkey island. Just because you found TR2 to be exceptionally hard doesn't mean that it actually is, *but* to your defense I've actually thought while replaying old games like TR and Hitman that they must be extremely confusing to the younger generation as they're used to dumbed down gameplay with maps, hints and quest markers "lol".
      So maybe you've just proved my own point to myself 🤷. People like me who started out in the 16-bit era are amazed by games like Fallout 4 and their huge open worlds while people like you who were born with a smartphone in your hand get your mind phucked by games that actually requires some thought to figure out. Doesn't mean that they're big and complex though, just that the constant decay of the human race is ever so prevalent. But again, your obsession about this still troubles me, there's something off about all this, and if there's one thing I can't stand it is to be patronized by today's youth, especially when they're not within arms reach.

    Great video and game. I recently bought a PS2 with an RCA HDMI converter on my 46 inch 1080P smart LED Samsung TV but the picture is blocky and blurry, no matter wat video settings i use on the ps2 or my TV, especially with the textures, when i play tomb raider games(ps1) on my ps2. Is there any thing that you use to get sharper picture? Like a PS2 component cable or something?

    I just beat this level yesterday but the game freezes at the end when running into the plane. Even tried to dodge it by using level skip and still freezes. The disc is fine I think I need to try it on a station other than ps3
