- I got a few questions about vibrato, so I made the second installment of the masterclass series about vibrato choices in a lyrical phrase - how to make the vibrato sound like a voice.

Use arm vibrato or push it with 3rd finger, sometimes you can't replace 4th finger with 3rd one, especially during double stops
I noticed that too. But if that's what someone learns from this video -- that in slow lyrical passages it's often a good option -- then it's a success.

I have only very recently come across Augustin. As a child of 12 years, I so wanted to learn the violin. I got to have one at home for a few months, but as my father had passed away, Mother did not have the money to pay for lessons. 60 years later , I get to attend our NZSO in NZ with Augustin performing. I likely be in tears , for I could not achieve.

Hi Augustin. I keep coming back to this tutorial whenever I am unsatisfied with my vibrato.
Brilliant articulation of what - in a trained and alert body/mind - has become largely a natural or organic function.
These videos are an absolute gold mine, even for non-violinists! Thank you so much. I've been feeling like my flute vibrato gets kind of monotonous sometimes. Thought maybe this video might help and it totally did!! Gonna start thinking of vibrato as a way to enhance the phrase arc, rather than just a thing that's always there.

Thank you. I felt that vibrato is kind of a intuitive to every violinist and come out automatically depending upon how he wants to color the phrase or set the mood.

Wonderful insights! Can you please give some technical advice on how to do vibrato way up high on the fingerboard where the wrist doesn't have as much freedom? I have trouble with vibrato up there because it makes the instrument shake and therefore makes the bow chatter. 🤔🎻 Thanks so much for making these videos and connecting with all us musicians out here! Hi Augutine. i use arm vibrato and when my arm gets tired it becomes inconsistent and vibrato stops at the middle of long notes. My frustration is growing

ive another idea: better double stops: i play rondo capriccioso and think it is hard to get fluent double stops, for example from 1st to 3rd position while changing hands from 2,4 to 1,2 without hearing a break. would be very interesting to hear. but very good video nontheless👍🏼
Thank you for this video! What is your view regarding the use of arm, wrist and finger vibrato? I heard people say only one should be used, others argue that they serve different purposes and others say that they can/should be combined or even merged (e.g. arm vibrato with a certain degree of wrist vibrato integrated). Personally, I was taught to use only arm vibrato. What is your understanding on this?

Great tutorial on vibrato! Thank you. I have a theory that simple double stops should be learned first before scales. How else can a student learn to play in tune when practicing scales if they do not understand first pitch and intonation, bow control, pressure and speed unless they first learn all these things from double stops. I always practice double stops first, then I go to scales. And I always practice extremely slowly in slow motion as if in pantomime and very softly. Your thoughts on this? - Ken - a 62 year old retired professional violist / violinist in Fresno, teacher and composer

Hello, are you supporting the neck of the bow entirely with your thumb here or using the shoulder support as well? i've found it very difficult even with a shoulder rest to do the vibrato motion without supporting the neck with my left hand in some way. Any advice?
i do sometimes support with the left hand but not really when i vibrate, that’s when i let go- mostly i hold it with the chin. if the left hand isn’t holding, it avoids the issue of the vibrato shaking the violin itself, rather than just moving around or against the violin.
@@AugustinHadelichViolin Thanks so much for getting back to me. Does this not cause pain or tension on the shoulder and chin to keep the violin up when pushing down on the string during the vibrato? I've tried doing this without a shoulder rest and it's very difficult. When i see you doing vibrato it looks as though your thumb is holding up the neck, unless it's just there for placement and ease of movement.

Augustin, is your vibrato in a specific rhythm to the music your playing? Meaning is it in some subdivision of the beat or moving between them? Or is it something more random?
Do you use support?
If your asking if he uses a shoulder rest, no. He uses a sponge-type pad that he places between his tee shirt and outer shirt. He discusses this in his video about posture advice.❤️

Can barely hear you man. Are you using a quality microphone? Check your recording level. Maybe you can try a mic you clip on your shirt, but that might make the violin too loud.
