Pressure Cooker Explosion - Lid Opening Under Pressure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- A test we conducted on a stovetop pressure cooker as part of the investigation on a case where we were trying to help a little girl that was terribly hurt. You can read more about the case and the result here: flarecord.com/...
In this test we bring the pressure cooker up to operating pressure then slowly release the pressure simulating a side vent release. At 3 PSI a pneumatic arm activates and opens the lid. The lid is not supposed to EVER open under pressure. If you're short on time jump to approx 55 seconds in.

The sound it makes is enough for me to stay away.
Pressure cookers are amazing, a work of wonder, changed my life honestly they are that good, to be fair mines a Yedi instant pot, cooks frozen chicken breast to tender in under ten minutes, a roast in less than 30
“ITS GONNA BLOW!!!”
The steam itself can burn the crap out of u if ur not careful
My sister opened it while still having like 5-10% pressure inside and everything inside the pressure cooker is blown away, thank god she gets away with only mild burns
So glad to hear she only had mild injuries. Pressure cookers are not supposed to open when there is pressure. But many still do. And even a small amount of pressure can send the hot contents flying. Be careful with pressure cookers. Or better still…find another way to cook.
Give her one tight slap on her face ..... if she is old enough to understand that what could have happened if there was enough pressure left in cooker .... stupid girl
Thanks for the experiment, now I don't need to try it myself 🤣
Not as bad as I thought but still terrifying
The bad part comes when your face is close to flying boiling water.
Bro that's not 100°C water it's 250°c water
Almost opened one a few weeks ago when it was still pressurised. Something told me otherwise and I was informed that had I opened it, the lid would have gone through the roof
Glad you didn't! And glad you didn't get hurt.
It'd be severely traumatizing in so many levels. Always trust your gut.
I was so lucky that I didn't open the pressure cooker when I was 10 years old. My dad leave it down and I tried to open it forcefully
Wow, you sure were lucky! Thanks for sharing.
I know a teenage girl who sustained 40% second degree burns all over her body after she tried to open a very large pressure cooker without releasing the steam. Luckily her face remained unharmed but arms, shoulders, chest, abdomen and some parts of upper legs were so badly burned the doctor had to peel off all the dead skin. She still has white scars all over her body, she learned a lesson a very hard way.
me to but opened it its a huge explosion and my face chest full of arms and its happend 10 days before my birthday.... remember safety first removed the whistle and leave it 30 min then or 1 hour to opened it
dude i almost did this to myself i opened it while the pressure was still building up. thank god it didnt fully build up
Pressure cookers should be designed so that it's impossible to open when on full pressure. I have one and you have to press the lid on first then turn the lid around like 10cm, there are these cogwheel like extensions on the outside and on the lid too and you have to turn the lid until these extensions overlap and then the lid is secured. When it's on full pressure it's impossible to turn the lid and open it due to the huge force pressing against these extensions.
Thank you for removing my urge, intrusive thoughts of opening a pressure cooker while under pressure :)
Hahaha... you're welcome. ;)
This video was 50 seconds too long
How is this even possible? Pressure cookers should be designed so that it's impossible to open when on full pressure. I have mycology as a hobby and use it to sterilize grain spawn jars, when done sterilizing I open the pressure release valve and the steam escapes violently via a small tube. When no more steam escapes, it's safe to open.
You are right, when its on full pressure it can't open due to the friction between the lid and the pot flanges. But when the pressure begins to drop there comes a point when it can open. For this particular model that pressure is 3psi. This experiment trys to open the pot when it reaches 3psi. Because this one has a defective locking mechanism it can open.
My mom used to say that ,when i was in my mom's womb , she opened the lid with under the pressure...but anyhow we survived with a little burns**🤧,
THANKS FOR THIS INFORMATIVE VIDEO.....
I have an instant pot the lid twist which which secures it and when it is pressure cooking it automatically locks the lid where when the float valve rises The thicker part of the bottom valve automatically pushes out the locking mechanism where the lid cannot be turned which keeps the lid on a track and it cannot be pulled off until it’s twisted counterclockwise which that locking mechanism stops that from happening when float valve is raised up hearing pressure mode. However people need to be careful when they buy some of the stuff on Certain web sites and you see it really cheap because some research has shown with anything there are counterfeit items and you want something that is going to be sturdy and actually made by Annie manufacturer who makes the product which is laboratory tested. Sometimes people make a mistake to try to pick one up and move it while it’s cooking as I said mine has a locking mechanism but if that mechanism for some reason was to fail and you accidentally twisted or drop it while you’re moving it ain’t no telling what could happen. With that being said I’ve never had an issue with mine it’s pretty safe.
Good points. You can't always trust the lock. Also keep in mind when they "test" these they don't test every one. Just a few samples at the beginning of production. That means, in effect, you are the one testing the one you buy. Be careful with pressure cookers!

Thank you, I was curious but not curious enough to try it myself 😂
Do not try this at home.
I bought one today and using it correctly I feel like I need to stand behind a blast shield.
Scares the shit out of me 😂
Using mine for the first time tonight, making beef stew. These comments got me spooked as all hell!
Chernobyl in a nutshell
+ Heat
+ Size
+ Pressure
+ Radioactivity
Remove radioactivity and you have pressure cooker
This test was only at 3psi? Would love to see full 15psi, the water continues to boil for a long while... 240f water.. yikes.
It's quite surprising it's that violent at such a low pressure.
We found that with this particular model at 15 psi the friction of the lid's tabs with the pot's tabs was strong enough to prevent it from opening.
Most of the pressure cooker accidents happened in the same way. I have met some people during social work project who sustained burn injuries after they tried to open a pressurized cooker. Unfortunately there's no safety mechanism used in locally manufactured pressure cookers in poor countries which can prevent a cooker from opening which is still pressurized.
@@komalshehzadi3524 Yes exactly, but even in rich countries, like the USA where this was, the supposed safety features and "locks" can and do fail. Extreme care must be taken, or better yet, cook without pressure.
@@MrRolandOchoa I don't know man. You are being a bit unrealistic. Lets not cook anything, because cooking needs high temperature, don't use water because we can get drown. Don't go out because we can run in front of a car and die.
Safety features needs to be there so i'ts don't blow up from pressure. Don't opening a hot pressure wessel is just common sense as "don't eat the glass" "don't stub yourself in the heart with the knife". You can blame it on the company, but then you can blame everything on some company. "Oh I killed someone while tryin to rob a bank? Blame it on the knife maker because it lacked safity stickers." USA has gone crazy with this kind of things, look for your fkin children and don't try to ruin other people lifes for your stupid fault you twat.
And the disgusting part is that the $26 million she received will probably end up in the greedy pockets of American healthcare providers who overcharge for care that is free in most civilised countries.
unlike europe I like not paying 60% of my annual income and being able to afford a military
@@noahallard1313 and here I am in Poland paying 8.5% tax, you muppet
My mom did this today and the beans went everywhere
Woah! I hope she's ok. Dangerous things they are.
Is she okay?
I guess we'll never know her fate
Pretty sure it didn’t happen. You can’t just by accident open a pressure cooker 😂
@@rickhunter6513 why not
thanks, i wont do it myself from curiosity anymore
Can these things just explode if you don’t open them
Oh yes--- if the something goes wrong with the pressure relief valves (foaming from beans is often a culprit, over filling is another) then the pressure can build up to the point that they explode like a bomb. Here's a picture of the stove after one of our controlled experimental explosions: qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-31381b37362ba6dd2b8bedf74c359634-lq
So yeah, place under water and use a spoon to lift the regulator to release the steam. Then open it. Don't be dumb
Hello, and greetings.
If you can tell me what was the pressure reading when the lid was opened?
I could not find any info on the net about maximum psi pressure before the pot warps...
In this experiment the lid opens at just under 3psi.
3? Holy crap… they go up to 15
Thanks i've always been wondering 😂
wow only 3 psi crazy
I did this once when the cooker had like 10 or 15% pressure. Burns on my arms, stomach and face. Was blind in my left eye for a week.
Wow. Sorry to hear you got hurt.
I literally tried to force one open but gladly it had a safety lock on it.
Wow. Be careful. What my experiments showed me was that at full pressure most are very hard to open because of the friction on the locking lugs (tabs on the side of lid and pot) but as the pressure drops there is a point where you can open it. The only thing that stops you is the lock. If the lock is faulty or not there like in some models then it can open. Play it safe.... use a microwave. ;)
How old were you?

@@KimberlyGiroud Haha 😆 glad you didn't open it, you wouldn't look pretty if you did...
Lol i was so dumb, i actually opened it...after leaving to cold for like just 10 minutes...one moments later, i was covered with chicken broth and burnt skin to be lefted on my shoulder and hands...
That's terrible.
Luckily, i wear spectacles 😀😀...couldve gotten more worse that
I put on a helmet and war gear before I open mine 🤣🤣🤣 or when I go into my kitchen
That's so Scary !!!!
That was scary
Who else was about to do this
This is essentially what happened at chernobyl but with radiation.
Thanx 😐
This should have been 10 seconds
Was this a work project?
yes
Screw those things, not in my kitchen
Love the gun shot sounds too. Pcs are not going to explode like this.
I know what to give you for christmas
Fucking scary
anyone here after "rasode me koun tha????"
Excelente experimento resuelve curiosidades, sin que nadie salga lastimado 👌
Sí, el experimento funcionó bien. Gracias.
Idk I really want those hard-boiled eggs right now this doesn't seem so bad
The water is far above 100 degree...
Your eggs will end up being hard-boiled all right.
Welcome to the dark side.

@@komalshehzadi3524 The problem is the parents, not the kids. These things should only be used outside a bomb shelter. XD
I played the explosion part in 0.25 speed 🤯🤯
wasn't that bad
Thats boiling hot water being thrown all over you bro
@@KillerRatedM that's will be very bad if someone near around.
@@keefa79 yeah, usually there is someone around to actually open the lid. Imagine this is an explosion at 3psi or less ,these things go up to 15psi or more.
Lame... HEAT the thing up to pressure, THEN open it ! This is a VERY misleading video. If you open that thing at 15 psig / 250f, this would be on a whole nuther level... Pushing some steam or air in it is just plane fake.
Kurt.. the point of this demonstration was to show that when you open it at low pressures the contents erupt. At high pressures like you mention the lid's tabs provide enough friction that opening it becomes very difficult with the plastic handles breaking often before the lid rotates open. Thanks for your comment and the opportunity to clarify.
Explosion @0:54, thank me later.
Thanking you later, now.
