Legacy of British colonial heritage. As you are in the hill country, even the tea is the legacy of the Brits who introduce the plant from China. Tea plant is not native to Ceylon, yet it had a very colourful journey all the way from China, via Sikkim. It was to break the Chinese historical monopoly on tea, which drained Bris coffers, and ultimately lead to opium wars. It was in a place called Haputale where the first plants were planted by a Scotsman. I think Haputale is not far from the "Little England', hope you can pay a visit with the help of the locals. If I am correct India too has a little England in Simla.

I thought tea plant is native to Sri Lanka, as it is promoted as Ceylon Tea. I am aware there are hundreds of varieties of Chinese tea in China, including many black tea types. Thanks for the information.

@@thetruthseeker5448 There are many varieties of tea. If from China, the tea will represent the name of origin. Senna tea is not from China for sure. Ceylonese tea is uniquely from Sri Lanka as it is my favourite with sweeten milk. Glad you replied.

@@thetruthseeker5448 *First* commercially mass produced tea was *planted* from Chinese seedlings were in Haputale by a Scotsman James Taylor. His plantation still exists as much as his bungalow/residence. And then spread throughout the colony to cater the UK. Chinese black was the most sort after in the British high society. Haputale tea meant to be exported to London, and after few auctions it picked well as it originated from the same Chinese specie, to replace shipments from China and their demand for higher prices. Tea was planted purely for British market not for local consumption only a fraction for expats and few locals. The rest is history, with opium wars, HK etc, all due to high prices for Chinese black tea.

Your history lesson is partly Wrong, Tea was not commercially planted first in Haputale, it was first planted in Loolcondera in Kandy. @@timetoreason7090 , also check again on the opium wars you are talking about.

I love Nuwara Eliya. The weather is much cooler than the south and the east of SL. Victoria Park is worth a visit. It can be drizzly at times, so be prepared!

Love your experience of the colonial British times brought back. Certainly looks really different to other places in the country including the climate, enjoy your time and keep posting more clips for us to get an overall idea of this beautiful country.
I need to make a mention of something a bit concerning which disturbs to see while everyone understands as backpackers you only look for real cheap things and thats fine, however even in many of your previous clips we see you bargain for even 2-300 rupees for everything, even entering their park at 500 Rupees which is only 1pound 20 p , you'll didn't want too pay?
End of the day this is a beautiful country fit for any type of traveller from budget people like you to medium spenders and high end spenders, so please don't give this really cheap impressions in cost for everything you do or ever where you stay as this really does not showcase the other extremes available for every type of traveller to this beautiful country. Please take this comment in good spirit as its good to see you enjoying this classy country.

Hey there! Thanks for watching the vlog and taking time to comment 😊 Nuwara Eliya, like most parts of Sri Lanka is a beautiful place! We love it here.
You are correct, we are at the beginning a worldwide backpacking trip funded by savings so us backpackers do need to make sure things fit into a budget whilst also experiencing as much of the country as possible. We didn’t pay the 500rupees on the video as it was just starting to rain so it would’ve been wasted, we went back the next day and enjoyed it off camera. Being a tourist in many parts of Asia requires you to haggle for prices, as you may or may not know, the prices for things when a tourist approaches is waaaay higher than the original, local price. Even any honest Sri Lankan will tell you to haggle and barter as tourists pay well over the odds of what the product/service is usually worth. This is not endemic to Sri Lanka but in most of Asia. We will always leave good tips to honest people who deserve them, on or off camera 😊
We are now in Colombo and we are filming / documenting the modern side of the country and showcasing what Sri Lankan luxury hotels look like. These videos will be released very soon and we hope to shed light on Sri Lanka’s development and modernisation 😊🇱🇰

Nice to see your travels in SriLanka. Few tips on your videos though. No matter you say it's a beautiful country we don't get to see much of it through your videos. All we see is your face. And camera jerks and rotating of the camera gives headache. We don't need to see your face every time you talk. You can talk in the background while you show the surroundings then we get to see the beauty of where you travel. After watching ur videos all we have watched is your face not the places you have travelled
