- From "I've Known Rivers And Other Bodies" (1973)
Recorded in performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival; July 7, 1973.
Gary Bartz (Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Vocals)
Hubert Eaves (Piano, Electric Piano)
Stafford James (Bass, Electric Bass)
Howard King (Drums)
Brings me back to when I first heard this song on the great, departed Denver jazz station KADX. Then years later when I was a jazz DJ I used to play this song quite a bit on KUVO, also in Denver. Now I drive a bus in Las Vegas and I find myself singing this song as I drive. The river of life flows on and music connects it all together.
I remember listening to this song back in the 70s on w j z z in Detroit
Talk’n bout Rosetta Hines bruh. They don’t know. Pure Detroit. 😎
This song makes me happy for no reason. I just feel so joyful every time I listen to it.
A must have on your jazz playlist ❤
Just beautiful. I could listen to this on loop for hours.
It is reminiscent of a couple of Pharaoh Sanders tracks -Rejoice & You've got to have freedom. To me it's the piano in all three tracks, as much as the saxophone, that sets them apart. All three are spiritual jazz classics.
Thank you to my HS beloved Paul for sharing this song with me. And saying it instantly reminds him of me. What a compliment. 💗
Very soothing to hear this song at this very unprecedented time. Who knows where this corona virus thing will end. This song transports me back to a simpler time in my life. It has always made me think of the Creator and His beautiful creation of which we are a small part. I have been very blessed to see some of it-- South Africa, Egypt, Makkah and Madinah, and most recently Algeria and Turkey. I don't know whether I'll ever travel internationally again. This virus has ushered in a change of such a gravity that who knows whether things will ever return to what they were before corona virus. What keeps me hopeful, however, is knowing the Lord of the Worlds is "oft forgving, most merciful" as He says in His Book. Thank for sharing this beautiful poem set to the music of the incomparable Gary Bartz.
Cool
This just popped into my mind today so here I am.
Thank-you Earl.
Caleb Rodriguez we've both got great taste in music. Have a chill and good life fam✌
Taken from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, the one time member of the MIles Davis band Gary Bartz, fruity tone aligned with his emotional approach on saxophone makes this track a classic
This puts me in a spiritual place
I dedicate this to the greats Langston Hughes, Kobe Bryant, Dr Frances Cress Welsing, Malcolm X and George Floyd. Much love and respect ❣️🙏
Love this music, it heals my soul and brings peace

Giuseppe Ungaretti - I Fiumi
If y'all want a real treat, you need to check out Courtney Pine's version with Cassandra Wilson on the vocals....omg.
Too hip! He has been the stuff for a while, totally underappreciated
Kwabena Cawarrie Love LANGSTON HUGHES poems. Love Gary Bartz and the NTu troop
strangely terriffic, yes, evocative of Pharoah.

You are so right. Carlos was a friend of mine. He was one bad dude but never got the accolades he so rightly deserved.
