I don't think player elimination is an inherently bad mechanic, but rather should only be used in games that take max 15 or so minutes to play, preferably less. That way people are only sitting around for a few minutes and can still be enthralled in the fast paced action of the game before shuffling up and starting again
Secret Hitler only eliminates a couple of people in the last few turns, and those eliminated players can still win if the rest of their team wins.
There are also games like Blood on the Clocktower where even after a player is "eliminated", they can still influence the game's outcome from beyond the grave.
Game-in-photo IDs:
1:26 - (The Settlers of) Catan [also 3:30]
1:29 - I'd guess Dominant Species
2:24 - I don't know (Looks kinda interesting, though)
^update: It's "Die Dolmengötter."
2:28 - Tiny Towns
2:59 - Power Grid (possibly an expansion map)
3:02 - Carcassonne (with an expansion, possibly Princess and Dragon)
3:33 - Azul
(3:46 - Dune)
3:48 - Cosmic Encounter
3:51 - Risk
8:14 - Pandemic
8:17 - Mysterium
10:05 - Viticulture
12:41 - Clue (if you're American)
12:43 - Secret Hitler
Laurie is such a natural talent. I love all of the WT guys in their own ways but I am always engaged with Laurie's content.
I ❤️ Eurogames and I ❤️ Laurie's explainers. So it's no exaggeration to say that I have been waiting for this video ever since PN/NRB started.
And it's exactly as fantastic as I hoped it would be.
Laurie always has real good looking backgrounds and sets. His eye for aesthetics is wonderful. I appreciate it a lot.
Appreciate this. Having fairly recently gotten into modern board games I now find myself often explaining the concept of modern/Euro-style games to people who think the classics we grew up with are still the prevalent style of game. Was looking for a good way or video to explain it and this will be my go-to for that purpose!
Also iI want to say, Eurogames usualy have indirect, isntead of direct player interaction, not no interaction at all, and have less/minimal randomness, not no Randomness.
ALSO also most eurogames have actually less and very very focused and streamled Rules, isntead of heavy, thematic rules.
Yeah this video is actually full of oversimplifications if not outright factual errors like claiming TTR is American when Alan Moon is actually English. The only thing American about TTR is that the publisher Days of Wonder was founded by French expats in California before moving operations to France.
We need a video about "Ameritrash" games history, to level things up.
I love heavy euros from Uwe Rosenburg. And then I also love dice based games with luck involved as long as the mechanics are interesting. I love a ton of games. I just want more games!
Oooh, does this mean we'll be getting two collection starters for eurogames later this week? Looking forward to it!
Underrated Video, Not Just because of the funny Sketch in the beginning. Thanks for the work!
I'm getting serious into board gaming and I seriously googled this yesterday. You guys are great!
Reiner Knizia's games are 100% euros but at the same time they often got player interaction cranked up to the max.
There’s always going to be a trade off when luck is added or taken away from a game.
I find ticket to ride rather fun because I feel it has the proper mixture of luck and strategy.
You can get lucky in getting the train colors you need which is very helpful for a new player
And I love the change in momentum when everyone realizes their plan abs you get a whole turn of everyone drawing a card and it just feels like everyone especially the new players
Got it.
I never feel bored with it though
Or that my strategy is useless, like sorry. I can play it several times and be intrigued by each new game.
Luck based games do have their place, I remember playing sorry and candy land as a child, but I also don’t play them anymore.
Finding a way to remove luck without disadvantaging new or non strategic players should be a goal in game design.
There's plenty of room between Candyland and chess.
I always think of Diplomacy when people complain about losing from the start of the game. I think Diplomacy is clever, because yes, “the ones who can win” will be decided the first turn. There’s theoretically no luck, although playing against people who hate you is bad luck.
But you don’t have to win in Diplomacy. You can keep losing the whole game while trying to “lose less”. If you roleplay the thing, just assume you’re responsible for your own country and you don’t want to lose more territory. Deciding the player(s) you want to side with is more important than winning, you want safety and you want reasonable requests for that guaranteed safety. There are an infinite number of ways you can play as a “losing” player, but you never get bored (unlike Risk, lol).
Another consideration: my background is mostly videogames, and I always found odd how board game enthusiasts blame luck for deciding who’s the clear winner. In a parallel with, let’s say, racing videogames, something with a lot of randomness and chaos like Mario Kart represent the “casual” side of them, you can get first and get annihilated by random items thrown at you by the “bad” players behind you (interaction; chance). This is a specific game design choice, it’s a family game. I wouldn’t play something like Forza Motorsport with someone who never played it, because unlike Mario Kart there’s no randomness, no interaction, the most experienced player wins and that’s it. 🤷♀️
@@jacopovilla1590 That’s a very good comparison.
living in german part switzerland board games are huge and me kids play a game if not daily every second day
I've been wanting you guys to do deep dive on Euro Games! Thank you!!
Just because something is new, doesnt make it better. It makes it different. Just because something is old, doesnt make it trash, it makes it different. If you suck at one kind of game, you will like new or different games you are good at. For me, "American" style games and "Euro" games are just two different styles of game that provide one outcome: fun. I can like Star Wars and Star Trek at the same time. I do not have to choose between them.
Nice Spiffing Brit cameo.
I'm new to the hobby and I've been curious about this myself. I get it now! Thanks brother!
ADAM: Anyone got a favourite Eurogame they'd like to share?? Hit us up BELOW!!
I'm really hoping that Dice Hate Me games gets out of their funk - they were initially set up with the idea of euro style games with more interesting themes, so Compounded for example does a lot of the same things as Catan (but without the annoying effect of the robber forcing players to go turns without getting resources). Great Heartland Hauling Co is an excellent intro to the pick up and deliver genre. Brew Crafters looks like something much more interesting than the farming of Caverna/Agricola.
Favourite Euros:
-Compounded
-Suburbia
-Dice Hospital
-Pandemic
In general though, I want games with a much stronger narrative feel like Dead Of Winter, things that me think about things from a different perspective while Euros tend to be dressed up abstracts
Been playing Concordia on Table Top Simulator since I lack the money for a physical copy at the moment, but it's high on my wishlist once I do have the money for it.
Comfy tier - Chakra
Complex tier - 7 Wonders
Hardcore tier - Marco Polo
I LOVE Scythe. Does Mysterium count? That's my favourite of all time.
@@ollywinkles I don't think Mysterium is a Eurogame. That one is more so co-op and party-like. Still fun though, just in a different way!
I didn't quite get what "euro games" meant before, but you put into words what I didn't know how to explain as to why I like the games that I like versus what my friends prefer.
I just enjoy smart games. That's it.
I did not expect you to drink all of that. Good on ya!
"Looks like we're going for a hard Brexit..." 😂😂😂
I am from germany i play these kind of games for 25 years now its crazy that i didnt know people dont play those kind of games everywere. i realise now why i hate random factor in pc games now because i we dont have those in our bord games
Not European nor American, yet I still don't like the same aspects of Euros several of you mentioned. I tried A L-O-T, do like many, but I like the most party games, hidden roles, and whatever encourages the social aspect of a board game: interact with each other!
Great video. Helps explain it so well.
How does this definition reckon with Catan having a big slice of luck AND antagonistic interaction?
Around since the mid 2000s? I must have imagined going to Spiel, with veterans, in 1995 then.
You don't need to obscure the leader if you allow inter player "activities" to alter who it is.
Great overview!
Loving this channel!
Awesome video. But I don't think the dice thing is on the market with Euros nowadays. Dice drafting has seen a renaissance these last few years. Teotihuacan helping to lead the charge and now we got tons of games using dice in creative , balanced ways.
If I was to say a definition for Euro, it's not a lack of luck, but that luck can be managed and mitigated.
GLoomhaven has euro mechanics, but the sheer randomness of monsters and no actual deck building mechanics makes it firmly out.
I feel like engaging more modern euro games would change this video a bit. The modern euro feels like Euro/American Hybrids. I mentioned Teotihuacan and its use of dice. But you also have games like Near and Far, that has a fantastic worker placement element but weaved in a narative story that's highly interactive.

Ticket To Ride's designer, Alan Moon, is actually British.
American here. I’m going with “best thing in the world and I’d really like to be a part of it again”
Nice to see that Ol’ High jump John made it out of the bedroom.
That's some good German there Laurie! Starke Leistung
Really, rain water? Couldn't put whiskey in there to represent Britain? Nah, nah course not, that'd be madness, a Scottish drink representative of Britain? That is insanity.
So how would you describe Aussie style board games? It seems to be the trend that a lot of VHS/ DVD interactive board games originate from Australia. Are they classed in their own category of board games?
Incredible video
was that a wild spiff on the cheese.... 4:42
Adam labeled as Overlord made me giggle
I’m early so I don’t have a witty comment. Hope everyone’s doing good! ❤️
The most deterministic game in existence is Candyland. Who wins is already determined and you're just finding out. Therefore candyland is a Euro game
Interesting
I assumed Eurogames were more about being language neutral
Like Dixit
But this really opened my eyes
By the way everyone. BOTH Eurogames and Ameritrash are respected (despite the name.) the video doesn’t really get that across
❤ Thank you for thoroughly distilling exactly why I avoid Euro games like the plague. They’re not so much games but rather tedious work assignments DISGUISED as games. They’re a vehicle for left-brained players to feel like they’re playing a game as they put on a solo exhibition of their independent math skills. They pack all of the excitement and interaction of watching your quiet smart dad put together a circuit board for a remote control. Sure, it’s satisfying to watch it all come together as your German dad can finally turn on the TV at the end. But this little exercise has all been about him showing off his aptitude and teaching. Maybe he can invite over OTHER dads on the spectrum next time and they can compete to see who can put together the remote fastest or with the least amount of circuits. Or MAYBE, we can all play an ACTUAL game, and just humor dad every once in a while.
could you BE anymore obnoxious?
As a reply video this works really well. Don't we miss those? Reply videos.
As an American its totally fine you guys think we're dumb. We are. Were also smart. And dumb. Mostly dumb, but smart sometimes too.
Laurie you sir are a maniac!
American games are impossible for my parents to comprehend, however they loved tickets to ride and games like that.
That’s why I don’t like terraforming mars. Feels like I’m playing alone with friends around who also play alone. Almost as if everyone was on their mobile.
6:17 You can't really push to end the game in Monopoly (except by
offering to sell other players small things for all the money they have).
>>
8:17 I must take issue with the idea that strategy was founded by German family games.
>>
8:33 Bold assumption that we know what these mechanisms/genres are... Also,
hand management can be traced farther back, specifically to trick-taking games.
>>
9:52 Rather like asking if it matters what genre we describe a song or a film as.
>>
12:40 Was Cluedo really the best you could come up with for a "thematic dice-chucking game?"
Great vid. Current fave is Gizmos. Rain water - ha! 🇬🇧
Great video
Still not use i fully understand what makes a EuroGame a EuroGame, but am pretty sure Agora is one. Like that.
How'd you drink that shit?
What does 'please drink resonblepsy' mean?
Dude your humor is on point.
You forgot the dutch flag when you said rain water
Are dice truly random?
Not highlighting palinka for Romania and Unicum for Hungary
He is explaining the Eurpoean Union, not Europe. Other than that, great video!
Arin Hanson brought me here
Beer before liq... oh dear...
Someone tell me where to get that beanie
I just like to play because it is the only way I can interact with people and my anxiety doesn't go crazy .
Euro games are not divisive
Me, who hates this style: nah
Yes Germany has the best games.. Good German Laurie
So Guinness ain't beer, is that what you're saying?
Dutch Beers. Good joke Laurie, they mostly produce horse wee.
I always find it ironic when people say euro games are solitaire-ish. I'm an avid eurogamer and wouldn't be caught dead playing a solo board game. Obviously that's just my personal taste but I do feel those people might be underestimating the importance and pleasure of the subtle interaction eurogames provide. To me it makes a world of difference.
So basically, if it weren't for the Nazis, we'd all still be playing Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit.
I honestly dislike the expression. Not the thing itself but as a German speaker it sounds really odd.. it's like calling an American game "dollar game". It doesn't sound good.
Brexit was the best decision.
I am wondering if you really understand what these "eurogames" are, since there are so many... just flat out wrong statements. Most "eurogames" have player interaction. It might not be direct, but there is always indirect interaction. No game is one where players have 0 interaction. Take Catan, which started this all. It has shit ton of player interactions. You can actively block your opponents moves, you trade with your mates, you discuss actions, you can move the robber... there is a lot of interaction. Just because these games focus less on "directly attack opponent" does not mean there aren't any.
Other is argument about luck, a lot of eurogames incorporate luck as stalemate breaker or something that shakes up the board EXACTLY to avoid "okay, this guy won already". Eurogames want everyone to be on board and have chance to win. Eurogames also take away a lot of "bullshit luck", AKA "I did everything correctly but I lost because the dice were not with me". With Eurogames, you can (usually) point to moment where if you had taken other decision you could have come on top.
The EU is not Europe.
Shows vodka, but no Russian flag..... BRUH
