- The age of commercial mountaineering is upon us, and while the results are impressive with a a staggering number of successful ascents on Mount Everest in Nepal and K2 in Pakistan, the downside is an unacceptable loss of life….with no end in sight. Nepal in 2023 issued a record number of climbing permits and all one needs to get that permit is the $11,000 fee…doesn’t even matter if you have a pacemaker and have never climbed a mountain,
In the first of several segments I speak with esteemed mountaineer and guide Adrian Ballinger of Alpenglow Expeditions. We discuss in this segment just how preventable most of the 17 deaths on Everest in 2023 were.

Adrian Ballinger is a British-American certified IFMGA/AMGA mountain guide, certified through the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA Rock, Alpine, and Ski Certifications) and a sponsored climber and skier. Ballinger is the founder and CEO of Alpenglow Expeditions, and has been guiding full-time for 25 years. He has led over 150 international climbing expeditions on six continents, and made 18 successful summits of 8,000m peaks.
He is known for pioneering the use of pre-acclimatization for commercial expeditions as early as 2012, which can cut the amount of time typically spent on an expedition in half. Adrian is the only American to have made three successful ski descents of 8,000m peaks, including the first ski descent of Manaslu from its summit. He is also the fourth American to have summited both Mount Everest and K2 without the use of supplemental oxygen.

My love for the mountains took a while to coalesce. It has been 33 years with my wife, who first taught me respect for nature beyond the campfire camping of my youth. While we will never see enough, we have a special desire to just see the Himalayas together, however we can. The history and mystery of those who literally found the way to these places is central to experiencing them for us. Many nights we have discussed details of treks, the people, the dreams, and the raw emotions of just being there during these expeditions. As my health becomes my greatest challenge, the mountains symbolize my dreams, and my learning of all these things from my wife.
Thank you for giving us topics to discuss. May we one day share thoughts while experiencing our dreams together.

I couldn't agree more. My late husband served 27 years as a Pararescueman in USAF. Our last assignment, and where we retired, was in Alaska.
I can't tell you how many times he put his life on the line for the stupidity of others.
If the person in trouble had done everything possible to keep keep themselves safe, to follow necessary rules to prevent getting into life-threatening situations, there was absolutely no heartburn about going after them and doing all possible to get them back, hopefully alive, and in as good of physical shape as possible.
This is fantastic insight, thank you so much. Adrian has a perspective that comes from literally years on the mountain, seeing things go down and especially seeing things change with the new era of commercialization. Thanks for watching and thank you for supporting the channel!

Adrian's approach is EXACTLY what is required as a minimum prerequisite prior to attempting the Everest's and K2"s of our planet. There is no doubt in my mind that it will reduce the unacceptable avoidable death count. The days of clients learning what crampons are at base camp must come to an end.
I so respect Adrian's willingness to loose a client to maintain his beliefs. Clients who are short roped up and down the mountain by a Sherpa owe their lives to them and as far as I am concerned did not really summit.
I would be very interested in hearing Adrian's thoughts on cleaning up the mounds of garbage and human waste left behind by most so called expeditions. As far as I am concerned if you are unable to haul down what was hauled up don't refer to yourself as a climber/mountaineer.

Great interview. I’ve never summited a beautiful mountain like Everest or any 8000-meter peak before, but definitely a dream. Or just to hike to base camp. I remember when I watched Everest Beyond the Limit. Super cool series. I wish I had the means to travel the world/high peaks. For now I’m stuck here in Norway 🇳🇴 Adrian is such an amazing person.

I admire Adrian's way of doing it the right way. I heard Russell Brice stopped doing guiding on Everest. I also thought he was a great guide too. It is so important to have the right guides.
I've spoken with Russell a couple times this spring....not sure if I'll be able to get him interested in an interview for the channel, though.

I keep hearing little tid bits here and there about the lady with the
Pacemaker . I am not a Doctor and i'm not a Mountaineer.. (just a hiker)The one newspaper article I read about her , Don't get me wrong I do admire her But everything she has done has been at a slow steady pace.. You can't do that on Mount Everest because time isn't on your side.. And also when you have a pacemaker don't you also have to worry about having the perfect oxygen at all times? This is the first time i've gave my thoughts on the subject and I am interested in others opinion. Everyone stay safe ✌️🌹

I know for a fact with I were a seasoned mountaineer, I'd not want people with no experience of 8,000 meters on my team.
How about don't go in the first place. Keep your garbage off the mountain...that might help

One day i want to go to napail not to climb everest but just to learn about the people's religion and i don't wanna climb the mountain it would be cool to clean it plus it would make the people happy
