Cannot wait for the video on how to pick out the right machine!!!
Working on it. :)
I found out the machine that the teachers used to teach students and bought that one
Today was the first time I found you. You were very clear, patient, VERY INFORMATIVE. THANK YOU THANK YOU AND THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
You are so welcome
I don't think a complete beginner would really know how good a machine feels for them? My recommendation in UK is Brother LS14. It's a fabulous machine for a beginner, I'm intermediate but it's one of my favourites. I have 5 which is kind of crazy but I love them all. ❤️ Thanks for a great video.
I'll check it out. Thanks for the information
I say… just as long as it isn’t a Brother sewing machine.
I'm in my 50s & have been wanting to learn how to sew so badly since my 20s that I have so much fabric that I've collected over the years of wanting to learn. My mom had bought a brand new baby lock before the pandemic but every time she tried to use it, got intimidated & went back to her 50 yr old Singer. LOL! So during lockdown, I used the manual & UA-cam to help me master making bobbins & threading her new machine. It's my machine now! But I did just like you said- I live in a small studio apartment but set up on my 1 table. When I need to put it away, it fits perfectly hidden away in my doggy steps. It was meant to be.
wonderful and glad to hear you are sewing!
Great tips, Jan. I've been thinking about upgrading on my sewing machine.
Thankyou. I'll be doing a tutorial here soon on tips for buying a new machine.
Thank you so much Jan, I’ve been sewing 🧵 for donkeys year’s, and I still make mistakes. I really really love ❤️ your no nonsense approach to sewing 🧵. It’s always so very very useful and helpful to, for any sewer to take notice of the tips and tricks you share with us all. Thank you so much for the free needle guide, that’s really really helpful and useful too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thanks again Mags.
Awesome tips. Thanks Jan
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tips!
Happy to help!
I couldn't find the link for the needle sheet, but wither way you have made my first experiences sewing, an absolute dream. I sat down with your tutorial yesterday and made 3 utility aprons... It was my first time sewing, and I loved it so much!!! thank you!
Wonderful! That is awesome!!!!! The link for the needle guide is here j-howell.ck.page/0a9fd4f007
thrift stores around here $25-$50. New rated #1 online less than $100
thrift stores are great
I always learn from you. Even though I have been sewing for years. TFS! Namesta 💓🐞💕
Wow, thank you. Are you feeling better?
Very useful tips, thank you Jan - I'm jealous of your sewing room😍
You are so welcome, and thank you.
Jan, your tips are spot on. I would add to your list: thanks to gifted teachers such as yourself and many others, anything you want/need to learn is readily available on UA-cam.
I think that NOT understanding (1) needles (type and size) and correct pairing with thread, use and fabric and/or (2) basic machine threading/operation are two of the basic struggles that many experience with "tension" or stitch quality issues. Schmetz has some great online info for the anatomy of a needle.
Not to quibble but... a Microtex needle works beautifully on cotton fabrics. In fact, I (and many others) do my quilt piecing exclusively with a Microtex needle.
Thanks for sharing
My favourite sewing machine is a Pfaff 1472, i bought it off ebay and the machine is 45 years old. It is my go to for all sewing projects. I did get a Janome quilting machine as it has a big throat space for free motion quilting. My worst was a Singer, it used plastic discs to do decorative sewing. I swear that machine hated me! The gal i gave the machine to absolutely loved it, she never had any issues. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks. You are so kind!
Thanks so much !!!
You're welcome!
Thank you! These are the tips I will use!
You are so welcome!
Another good one Jan, thanks. How about some types of baskets or bins. Maybe with tops or lids? Recycled fabric would be great for those. Thanks again.
Great idea!
Thank you. This helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
I’m a new sub and appreciate your content! Your vids are info-dense! Thank you & looking forward to new vids 💐💐💐
Welcome aboard and thank you!
Thank you!❤😊
You are so welcome
Oh Jan, how I wish we were neighbors! Lol! I am a completely self taught sewer and become easily overwhelmed so when I read my sewing machine book, I end up more confused. I still know nothing about changing sewing feet, needles & stitches so I end up always using the same. My mother was a sewer and passed away before I began sewing and oh, how I wish she was here for me to ask my 100’s of questions. I appreciate your videos more than you can imagine. Sincerely ❤
Cindy, UA-cam (Jan and many others) is your friend here. You can search for anything that you need. I'm completely self taught.
I’d love to be neighbors! Kudos to you for teaching yourself and what a tribute to your mother. I just lost my mother 2 weeks ago and there are things I wished I could’ve learned some things that I never asked about. Keep it up.
I’d you ever have a question please send me a note. Fibersandtwigs@gmail.com
Just found your channel and love it! New to sewing so this is all great info for me. Thanks so much!😊
You are so welcome
Just found your channel. So informative. Thank you so much. And subscribed 😊
Awesome! Thank you!
As a home dec sewer for many years, I have one simple suggestion to avoid costly and time consuming mistakes. Never attempt to rush through finishing a project if you’re tired or working late at night in a poorly lit room. I have inevitably woken up the next morning to discover mistakes that were totally avoidable 😢
Great advice. Thank you
Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you
You're welcome
I've been sewing on and off for about 50 years, really buckled down to it in the last 5 years and am excited to find another up-cycler. I'm hoping to work on all thrifted and up-cycled sourced products to sell at the Farmer's Market next summer and you're a woman after my own heart. The only tip missing for a beginner is to have an iron and use it throughout your projects. Subscribed and looking forward to diving in.
And know the difference between ironing and pressing
Wonderful! Yes, an iron is definitely a must! Thanks for the comment
I have been sewing for more than 50 years. I've never had a machine that didn't have tension issues...🤔😂
I hear ya!
Omg, I thought I had a curse!
Loved this! Thank you Jan! You explained these tips very articulately:) If you find some extra thread, fabrics, any cutters, threaded bobbins, mini machines, buttons, zippers, patterns .. yes (Jan’s secret hidden stash;) oh and patterns please 🙏 send any extra cool stuff to 684 pike run drive daisytown, Pa 15427 ..❤we love you Jan! 🎉 please keep sharing your wisdom ..thank you
You are so welcome!
It’s a Pfaff! The best!
i agree
I didn’t even know rotary cutters came in such a small size as that Fiskar one!
Dont buy fiskar one, it so bad just bought that one, didnt cut properly, return it bought the same one didnt cut properly it so weird. I returned it, now there a high suggestion one i just bought on amazon, maybe i got 2 defective ones but i google and some reviews said fiskar cutter pretty much are as great as others.
Martelli makes the best rotary cutter
That stinks. So weird. Thanks for the comment. We'll see if anyone else has an opinion
Take different fabric types with you when trying a machine. Thecstores only supply easy to sew on samples.
Great idea!
I’m surprised you are using Dual Duty thread rather than one of the smoother, better European type threads. If you look at the thread under a magnifying lens to see how fuzzy and rough it is. If I am having trouble with breaking thread or bad stitches I find the dual duty is very often the reason. I very rarely use it only if I’m desperate for a certain color.
Is there a way I can send you a picture of what my sewing machine is doing to my fabric? I am brand new and discouraged.
FYI I'm working with a Singer Curvey.
You can email a photo to fibersandtwig@gmail.com and I will take a look.
I have several machines also upward of 10 but only 1 serger! (3 of those are my Momma's that i inherited). Wouldn't part with those for the world.
that is nice
What’s the purpose of a serger and why do you need it.
Sergers finish the fabric edges and sew a seam at the same time so they don't fray. They are not a necessity but very useful.
I’m having trouble cutting straight
Are you using scissors or a rotary cutter? If you arn't using a rotary cutter, they can be real helpful in making straight cuts.
I don't know how to print out the free printable needle guide

I bought a cheap sewing machine and it was so frustrating to use because the engineering was pathetic
yes, some machines are so hard to sew on.
