Apparently they did that because they thought American readers wouldn't understand what "philosopher's" meant.
It had nothing to do with them thinking American readers wouldn't understand what philosopher's meant. They did it because they thought sorcerer was more American and American children would be more interested in a book that had sorcerer in it instead of philosopher.
