    This was my first system. I have the vivid memory of my teacher asking the class if anyone had a games console. Bunch of kids put their hands up and said Atari or Grandstand. I raised my hand and said a Philips Videopac and he said "That's not a games console" in front of the whole class.

    This was the first game system i ever saw at my older. Cousins house. I was awestruck. I begged my parents for moths to buy me one and finally they caved in. I got a 7400 and played all the mentioned games. Eventually I sold it and got a C64. Much later a few years back I was visiting my cousin again and he handed me the Videopack with all the games. Really nice gesture. It now lives in my my gameroom

    I was so amused as the video kept going. I own the first three titles that you featured, almost expecting to have the majority of the games on your list. Instead, the only other one to show up was K.C.'s Krazy Chase. I seem to own 15 of the 47 games released in the USA, with their original boxes, so I'm almost a third of the way to a complete collection. One day I'll actually play my copy of Quest for the Rings, just to see how the hybrid video and board game works out.

    Killer Bees is one of, if not the best, game on the platform. It offers a bit more depth of play than the majority of O2 games and creates that "just one more" obsessive mindset.

    Attack Of The Timelords was the first Odyssey 2 game I ever played during a special event at my hometown's local game shop. That game made me get an Odyssey 2! Poor thing was getting almost zero attention at that event too!

    The Odyssey2 was my first console (by a few weeks) and remains among my top 2 gaming machines (the TI-99/4A being the other), with their expanded memory "Challenger Series" cartridges being the best on offer. KC Munchkin and KC's Crazy Chase (which compbined Pacman with a snake game) were quite good, PickAxe Pete was great fun for a paired-back Donkey Kong, and Turtles was a truly outstanding Arcade port (one of the best ports of the game available at home). The Classic "Clowns" (Circus?) became PT Barnum, but kept the fun of the original balloon popping mayhem.
    Odyssey's biggest deficit was the memory restricton (which meant that games were single player and single life (Turtles being a notable exception). The use of graphic primitives in ROM to save RAM also meant all the games had common sprites (the little dude introduced in Golf, appears in every game where a little dude is required and is pretty much the system's signature character.)
    Their board-game/video-game hybrids addressed the meemory deficit, by creating a unique expanded gamelay to varying degrees of success (Quest for the Rings allowed for a pretty immersive Dungeon and Dragons Game with minimalist graphics and real, physical coins to win.
    All in all, even taking the shortcomings into account, I'm glad I bought the Odyssey instead of the 2600. It wasn't a home arcade machine as much as the 2600 was, but there was a uniqueness to what it offered that made it a quirky delight to own (and its "The Voice" speech syntheser rivaled the tonal quality of the 99/4A). (the features also included among my favourite classic joysticks...with casing indentation ridges that locked the stick onto the 8 directions, making angled motion more precise than any other console.
    A VERY important clsing note about the Odyssey2 is that over half it's games were written by one coder...Intel Salesman Ed Averett. Many of the games you featured in this review were his. he wrote 24 of the original 40 cartridges in just under 4 years.

      The Odyssey2 was me and my brother's first console. The TI-99/4a was my first computer too. My favorite O2 games are: Pickaxe Pete, KC Munchkin, Freedom Fighters & Quest for the Rings. For the TI-99 it was: Parsec, Moonsweeper, Jawbreaker II & TI Invaders. I learned BASIC on it and wrote my own Hangman & Breakout games. I have just as many fond memories of these obscure systems as the other much more popular systems I got later. 😊

    I love how the commercials use footage generated by mulit-million dollar rendering mainframes to show the graphics of a primitive 8-colour console. ;-) Haven't watched the video yet but the only 'exclusives' I remember for this junker (prominently displayed at the Woodward's department store in the early 80s) were Quest for the Rings, Pickaxe Pete and K.C. Munchkin. Let's see what I missed.

    Nice boxes they had the Philips games just like Atari but a bit different.

    Atari was a bit more expensive but I don't remember that very well.

    There were a few games you picked that were in my list; I like Killer Bees but my fave is Pickaxe Pete. The smashing of two rocks and getting a key gave a great feeling. I thought Videopac games made the 2600 looked advanced but they had great gameplay. This list made me wish I kept the console.

    Both mc munch man,crazy chase and pick axe pete are the only ones am interested in but it’s just a little thing what’s makes it interesting to me,even popeye couldn’t save that console to being just feel boring in my opinion,
    It feels more like playing atari 2600 ET or atari 2600 pacman on a shit rainy sunday,
    I do like the aestatics of the console and controllers but that’s it,to me what it needed was getting more arcade ports to it wich should,ve over push the hardware to it’s limits rather then getting low end altered clone derivations of games for it,also i hardly call the odyssey a game console,i consider it more to be a hybrid computer system.
    Still trough i do see huge potential in that hybrid game system😁

  • @IsaacKuo
    @IsaacKuo 6 місяців тому +1

    Practically speaking, all Odyssey 2 games are Odyssey 2 exclusives. The hardware limitations forced all ports to be pretty different from the original games.
    I think that whoever currently owns the rights to the Odyssey 2 doesn't know they do. You don't see "quick cash" bundles of old Odyssey 2 software like you see with Intellivision or Atari or lots of others.
    It's a pity, because I'd love to see Odyssey get the same "treatment" as Atari VCS/ColecoVision Chameleon/Intellivision Amico. I mean obviously there are differences. Atari VCS is legit and a pretty cool product. Coleco Chameleon was 100% scam that ruined the brand. Intellivision Amico is ... somewhere in between? But anyway, ruined the brand.
    Come on! I want to see what happens to Odyssey! Scam? Success? Ruined brand? Triumphant revival?
    It's just ... Odyssey 2 was just so different and honestly had some weird and quirky different IPs. It has more potential, I think, than the other not-yet-ruined brand, Vectrex. Unfortunately, Vectrex IPs just don't have the same "kick" ... mostly it's just painfully unforgettable that Vectrex isn't Atari (with its many iconic vector graphics games). The Atari Recharged games with their iconic quasi-retro vector graphics look makes Vectrex even less exciting.
    But a neo-retro Odyssey 2? That could be weird and quirky and different. It's just ... I don't think it can happen until some lawyer sifts through whatever stack of legal papers happens to confer current ownership of the IP.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  6 місяців тому +1

      Actually, you do, the first Videopac bundle is already on Steam with more coming: store.steampowered.com/app/2193100/Videopac_Collection_1/
      The brand and the games are owned by the same people who did TheC64 Mini and A500 Mini amongst other things, they bought all the rights from Atari (bet you didn't know they owned it!) a few years back. They also own the rights to the CD-i and loads of its games too.
      I talked about all this a while back in my Videopac Amazing Facts video.

    • @IsaacKuo
      @IsaacKuo 6 місяців тому +1

      @@TheLairdsLair Ooh, this is cool! This is from after the last I had checked (which was a while ago).
      But if it's the folks who did TheC64 and A500 Mini, then they wouldn't ruin the brand in some interesting train wreck way. They'll just release a competent Odyssey 2 Mini if they calculate there's enough demand for it (okay, there probably isn't).
      Still, maybe the next Tommy wannabe could buy it off them, for the right price?
