CORRECTIONS: 39:05 - Black Markets automatically activate when placed. Anastasia should have buried a treasure in this moment. 47:04 - Black Markets automatically activate when placed. Jonathan activated this Black Market due to the card effect but didn't do the automatic activation, which means he should have gained 4 more points. 1:01:13 - Jonathan forgot to use his -1 discount for cards. He should have 1 money remaining. 1:15:10 - Black Markets automatically activate when placed. Anastasia should have immediately gained 4p for her current 4 quests. 1:30:06 - Both Jonathan and Anastasia forgot to add a +50vp marker after completing the lap. 1:33:16 - Jonathan actually has 206vp, and Anastasia has 184vp.
Thanks for the playthrough! I have really enjoyed this because it is quite simple and fast but offers a lot of interesting choices. I think on 1:01:00 Jon payed the full 8 money for a card despite having one discount from the player board.
This was so much fun to watch. Your playthroughs are always great, plus your interaction with Anastasia was hysterical. She is so much fun! You should bring her back lol. I’ll be buying the game thanks to the two of you. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for the full playthrough, I like how the excitement of the players comes through in the Playthrough With Friends videos. I still think Maracaibo is the better game, but the decision space in this one also seems fun. Any plans to have a 3-player playthrough With Friends video with Anastasia and Nick? That would be fun.
I have purchased the equipment required to film a 3p game (that's how I made the John Company 2nd Edition playthru). Unfortunately, the logistics of getting two other people here to film at the same time has proved hard enough that it hasn't happened since. Also, Nick lives a couple thousand miles away so him appearing in person is unlikely :)
You both missed adding a 50-pt marker during end game scoring (at around 1:30:08). So Jon still won, but both scores were 50 points higher than you said.
1:03:07 Anastasia could have buried the Emerard first before taking the one for moving less than allowed ( immeadiatly gaining the 2 extra points she mentions here)
If Anastasia had taken the ship quest, she would also have gotten the 10 pts at the end. Therefore, I think she would have won by 1 point. I do like games where the scoring is so close.
The pirate theme is a good choice as this game feels more "free" than original Maracaibo. Looking forward to getting it when it comes state side. Hopefully sometime this year, correct?
Gosh, I have no idea how to adequately answer this. I will say that every time I played with Nick, he has beaten me. So that's a data point for the best player winning :P
It really varies from one game to the next, entirely depending on the complexity. This rulebook was on the shorter side when compared to Darwin's Journey :P Sorry, I don't feel comfortable sharing the details about it.
Fortunately the color of cubes doesn't actually impact the gameplay. In every playtest of this game the cubes were always grey, it's their location that matters. It is a bummer the different colors didn't work out for you though, they do help.
I'm halfway through the video and frankly I was bored by the game a quarter of the way through. I am not a fan of euros with a pile of symbology and very antiseptic feeling mechanisms, where the theme doesn't come through at all. It ends up feeling like an accounting exercise. Pirates! This should be a fun theme. It should feel like you're a pirate ship, not trying to decide what your engineering electives are going to be in your junior year. Another point, in general for any game designers listening out there, is that not everyone is a 20-30 year old with perfect vision. Small symbols and small artwork (Why tiny artwork in the middle of swaths of ocean?) detract from enjoyment for many of us. A board game board is normally at a distance further than is useful to look at with reading glasses.
I agree that the iconography is far too small in this game, it has been an issue for us while playing. That being said, I love this game. I have so much fun every time I play it, it'll be quite high on my "best of the year" list.
Thanks for this fantastic playthrough. We could all feel your and Anastasias excitment, very well done! Capstone Games will soon release it in NA.
Thanks for making another great game, and letting us join the playtesting process :)

Good catch! I've added a correction. I'm glad you enjoyed the playthrough :)
This is a great spin on Maracaibo, would love to play this some day.

I'm glad you found this fun, it was a blast to play!
Excellent playthrough. I was interested the whole way through. Some of your best work right here. Really showcased the game well.
Thanks, so glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Just played this for the first time today. Nice work on the rulebook, Jon! I found it very clear and it made it easy to get into the game 😊
That's so nice to hear, I hope you enjoyed playing the game too :)

Looking forward to watching this one. I really enjoyed Maracaibo but I have trouble getting it to the table anymore.
This is the main reason I have given away my copy of Maracaibo, but kept Pirates. Only one of these has a real chance of hitting the table.

Good catch! Depending on if other mistakes are found, I may end up adding corrections and re-rendering and posting a new version.
Such a neat evolution of "big" Maracaibo. Think I might look for a 2nd hand copy in October.
Fun game. Can’t wait for it to come to North America.
This game look great, Thanks Jon for the playthrough

When can we buy this in USA? Dang I need it already Jon!!!!
I believe around Gencon, not sure though. Hope you get a chance, it's great!
@@JonGetsGames Ya Alexander Just yesterday told me we are waiting on Capstone Games now.
I like this video and game!

I like this version where I win by 1! Let's all just say I did this :D
Jon you are evil, such a fun looking game and it seems to be out of print. Now I want it, lol!
Will soon be available.
@alexxpfister I got it...heh. Played once so far, I didn't win, lol. It's a fun game, will have to play again and get my pirate revenge.
The pirate theme is a good choice as this game feels more "free" than original Maracaibo. Looking forward to getting it when it comes state side. Hopefully sometime this year, correct?
Should be in Q1 or Q2 this year, so only a matter of weeks.
ohh this looks fun. Doesn't seem to be out in the US?
Not yet. Alex said on BGG forums that Capstone Games aim to release it on Q1.
With this being described by you as more tactical than strategic, what percentage of the time would you say that the best player wins the game?
Gosh, I have no idea how to adequately answer this. I will say that every time I played with Nick, he has beaten me. So that's a data point for the best player winning :P
How’s the pay for writing a rulebook? I’m guessing at least $1000. How many hours did it take you?
It really varies from one game to the next, entirely depending on the complexity. This rulebook was on the shorter side when compared to Darwin's Journey :P Sorry, I don't feel comfortable sharing the details about it.
I don't think you can just take 5 money 6:07 when landing on cards that add treasure to the islands ?
You can always choose to take 5 money and ignore the card you landed on. There is a reminder of this printed on the player ships.
john we cannot find this game to buy on amazon; is it publicly available for sale?
Capstone is releasing it in the U.S. in the next month or two. Hopefully available in the next few weeks!
Is there a date when this one will come out in the US?
Capstone Games said Q1/2024. So it should be a matter of some weeks.
First time I see you play w. Anastasia, love the energy. Thx for this video
Glad you enjoyed it, we certainly did while playing :)
Would Anastasia have gotten the bonus 10 for completing 6 contracts, if she had gotten that ship contract? Jon still would have won, but barely.
Yeah, she would have.
Ive missed the black market rule every time we've played 😅🤦🏼♂️
Both of you forgot a 50 points tokens, so really Jon ended up in the 200s
Yeah, we were having too much fun and completely missed those.
Poor color choice. Can't tell the difference between good and emeralds. :(
