    Here's what happens inside the transmission when you get a hard gear crunch on shifting. In our case, it's 2nd gear, so I show the worn out synchronizer ring and explain exactly what causes "grinding gears".

    I seem to be getting some weird grinds on my RX-7 FC now and then on upshifts for no reason. Clutch is all in too. They've stopped happening lately. Currently it happens when I mess up on downshifts because I go too fast through the motions and sometimes the gear stick doesn't go into place as fast asI expect it to. I usually get them right though. Gonna take it a bit slower.

    Great explanation! I was having some transmission problems in my vehicle, getting an intermittent crunch when shifting from 3rd to 4th initially. Took it to a shop, they claimed to have fixed it, but even after returning to the shop for adjustments two separate times the crunching still persists. Now it likes to crunch sometimes when down shifting from 4th to 3rd and sometimes from 4th to 5th. It's strange because the shop can't replicate it and it only seems to happen after I've driven around town for at least 30 mins to an hour. I've tried to dwell longer between the clutch being depressed and moving the gear lever and tried being fast and precise while rev matching, same, sometimes a crunch sometimes no crunch. Any ideas? (They gave me the old syncros from the first shop visit.)

    Thanks for this video. May I ask you some questions? When both input and output shafts are not moving, clutch pressed and car at rest, what ensures the alignment and the synchronization between the sleeve teeth and the blocking ring teeth or between the sleeve teeth and the gear teeth? Can those end up to a point-to-point condition and impede the engagement or the chamfer on the teeth will always make them sliding sidewise?

      It actually can last for years if the driver understands mechanical sympathy! You can shift patiently and gently, and even use another gear’s synchro to help. But it will do more damage to the gear and shift collar the longer it has to crunch!

    If I've got a worn synchro, Would it simply grind when going into a specific gear? In my situation, my car seldom goes into third. Either it will grind and refuse to go into gear, or it will go into gear. 90% of the time it refuses to go into 3rd gear, and I'm forced to skip straight to 4th

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  5 років тому

      Yup, each gear "has it's own" synchro. Grinding is a result of "forcing" when the gears are NOT synchronized. There is no harm in "skipping" a gear! I also have a video where I show how to use another gear's synchro to help shift one that is worn.

      Theoretically yes. I skip to gear 4 in my Camaro to save gas BUT… and this a huge but because my Camaro is tuned to skip to 4th gear from 1sr or 2nd for gas economy so maybe it’s an exception.
      I’m going to suggest if you attempt it and your car is not tuned for that you should rev your RPMs high when shifting up from 1st to 3rd. That way you can skip 2nd and land on 3rd without stalling or experiencing and jumping/jerky motions.
      Personally I’d just wait for the new gear box.

    so if I have a problem like this there is 3 parts to replace:
    1. the gear itself because the synchro teeth are worn on it,
    2. the synchro ring because its so worn that its not pressing on the cone surfaces and therefore its not synchronising the speeds,
    3. the sleeve that slides over the ring and onto the gear, because thats worn as well.
    is that correct?

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  3 роки тому

      Most of the time, only the synchro ring needs to be replaced... unless it has been grinding for a long time, or had other problems like jumping out of gear under load. You must inspect carefully upon disassembly, then decide.

    • @lukaszM46
      @lukaszM46 3 роки тому

      @@JemalCRM Wow thanks for the quick reply even though this video is not recent! There is not many videos that explain how synchro rings work as clearly as you did!
      I have a 2016 audi a5 with a 6 speed manual which has trouble getting into 1st gear sometimes, but not all the time. I press the clutch in and try to go into 1st but it only goes in half way. At this point I have 2 options:
      1. slip the clutch slightly and it will drop into gear (getting the shafts rotating somehow helps I guess)
      2. put it back to neutral, release the clutch, then press clutch again and this time it will go into 1st most of the time (getting shafts to rotate into a different position?)
      I am really confused what's going on here because at no point do I hear grinding sounds. and when it does go into gear, there is no clunk sound or anything. Do you have any ideas? If it was a worn synchro ring , I would hear grinding wouldn't I?

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  3 роки тому

      @@lukaszM46 Actually, you can have a worn 1st gear synchro with what you describe, As the main shaft is not turning when the car is stopped, you don't get that same crunch. The synchro must bring 1st gear, and thus all the gears to a virtual stop to engage a gear when the car is not moving, or barely moving. Remember that with the engine running and the car in neutral, the transmission gears are turning at engine speed. When you step on the clutch, you disengage the engine and the gears will slow and eventually stop. When you press on the shifter, the synchros "speed up" the stoppage.
      Try engaging another gear first.. such as second gear, then slip back into 1st (without releasing the clutch). And avoid revving the engine and spinning the gears even faster.
      You might try changing the trans fluid to a slightly heavier viscosity if the car has lots of miles. Or a thinner one if you are in a cold climate.

    • @lukaszM46
      @lukaszM46 3 роки тому

      @@JemalCRM I have tried some more
      When the car is standing still it is problematic when I try to shift into 1st right after pressing the clutch. Goes in half way, no grinding or bad sounds.
      In comparison, if I press the clutch and wait for a few seconds and then try to put it into 1st, it goes in fine.
      So it sounds like the input shaft needs to stop rotating inside the box, and then 1st goes in without problems.
      In the case of going into first, the output shaft is not rotating, so the synchro needs to completely stop the input shaft rotation to synchronize the speeds, and apparently it is not doing a great job at it.
      I understand that there is no clunking or grinding sound because the shafts are not rotating when the car is still, but even when I rev the engine a bit and then try to put it into 1st, there still is no grinding, so that's confusing, because this is creating a condition for it to happen.
      Going into a different gear and then into first without releasing the clutch is not much help since it takes the same time to press the clutch and just wait a bit.

      Most transmissions will grind at times without anything wrong, say if the clutch wasn't timed quite right, or you change you mind! Most will grind a bit into reverse, which usually has no synchronizer ring. Most will grind if you try to shift too fast. Does not necessarily mean something is wrong.

    What happens if I don't fix this?

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  4 роки тому

      Now there's a good question Jacob! You can drive for quite a while if you can be gentle with that gear, even skip it when conditions allow. What happens every time you get a hard crunch is that you do more damage to the gear itself at those little engagement teeth. Little chunks break off and get in the oil... and in the bearings, and in the meshed gear teeth, and the other gear synchros.
      You can use another gear's synchro sometimes... I show how in another video testing a Mini with a bad second gear, but that just isn't practical in any normal driving. You can get good at RPM matching and shift patiently, and put off an overhaul for quite a while.

    If the synchro clearance is off, can you get a rattling sound?

    I just got done with a transmission class and I still didn't understand how the synchros exactly engaged gears and where the 'grinding' sound comes from if the gearsets are always in mesh already. My teacher failed to explain this, but you did it perfectly well. Just wanted to thank you. Great video, perfect length too.
