Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on, "The ABC's of Musical Genres + Subgenres". This is admittedly some very specific, music-nerdy stuff that probably sounds pretentious, but I think it's cool/fun/important to be able to categorize different musicians. This was a fun game to play, I hope you got a few decent recommendations out of it, and comment below with your versions if you make your own!

Zamrock is amazing. It's a type of psychedelic rock that combines psychedelia with traditional African rhythms and sound. It's from 1970s Zambia. I'd recommend Wings of Africa by Musi-O-Tunya, Day of Judgement by Ngozi Family, and Black Power by The Peace. Great stuff
Black Power by Peace is so fucking good. Lazy Bones' album WITCH is great too, Bandsplaining did an awesome video on Zamrock btw.

Xote is tradicional music from the northeast part of Brazil, using lots of Accordion and percussion instruments. lyrics are usually about the stuggles of the northeastern people, very regionalized genre
Zydeco is also a is a music genre that evolved in southwest Louisiana by French Creole speakers which blends blues, rhythm and blues, and music indigenous to the Louisiana Creoles and the Native American people of Louisiana. Zydeco music is also lead by an Accordion, and a specialized washboard, called a vest frottoir.

As a peruvian, Zamacueca is a traditional dance and genre, it's what we would consider música criolla which means it is of indigineus and afro-peruvian origin. Now I don't know any album or artist that does "just" zamacueca, since most of these peruvian artists tend to switch genres within the whole of música criolla (like marineras, tonderos, festejos and more). With that in mind, I can only recommend artists like Chabuca Granda, Eva Ayllon, Arturo Zambo Cavero, who might have a few zamacueca songs in their repertoires.

for z: zef rap is a south african rap subgenre which is basically just trying to be as shocking as possible with their lyrics. the most popular zef rapper is yolande visser from the band Die Antwoord. highly recommended
For B i would say Bossanova a music genre from Brasil, it's a mix between jazz and samba, the music is literally gorgeous, I’ll recommend the classics, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Carlinhos Brown, Beth Carvalho, Djavan
Bossa-nova is the most important thing to happen to guitar since blues, jazz, and country layed the foundations for a lot of basic guitar techniques
As a Malaysian, my fav Zapin album (from Z category) is SM Salim bersama Orkestra Filharmonik Malaysia.
It is a live album so, you gonna hear the singer SM Salim does his 'grandpa' storytelling session first before he starts singing.
Listen to the song Pantun Budi for the general idea of the genre.
The reason that Dazey and the Scouts album felt as if it sounded older is because they also fit into the riot grrrl sub genre that reached its peak of popularity in the 90s as a female driven punk scene

Progressive Death Metal
It depends on the artist, of course, but bands like Fallujah, Kardashev and Aegaeon have managed to bridge the gap between utter mind boggling brutality and ethereal beauty with songs about nihilism, romance, futurism and other subjects, diverging from the stereotypical gore and violence. This is heavy music that will make you cry. I'd recommend The Void Alone (very fast and virtuosic), Between Sea and Sky (slower, the most accessible of the bunch and it's a waltz, lol) and Neural Union (really digs into the concurrent ambient and brutal riffing vibe), respectively.
Edit: Obviously these are not the genre greats but they most embody this brutiful kind of vibe.
Regular old prog metal is better

For Zamrock I'd say Rikki Illilonga or WITCH would be great entries.
For Zef definitely Die Antwoord, although personally I don't like their music, they gets major respect from me.

I'm a seperate the music from the artist type of guy (if I wasn't then whole genres like gangsta rap or drill would be no go zones) but in this case cos I don't like their music anyway it's an easy write off lol.
For z: zeuhl is a prog rock derivative that originated in the 1960s in France. Really amzing world building and imaginery. For sure check out anything by Magma

One of my favourite albums, in general, is "Fongola" by KOKOKO!, which is a modern and experimental approach to Zouk and electronic music in general. They are a band from Kinshasa, DRC and use self-build instruments alongside modern electronic production :)
I recommend to listen to the songs Malembe, Azo Toke and Tokoliana
You have to listen to Natalia Lafourcade's "Hasta la raíz" or "Musas Vol. 1" if you want a great mexican folklore experience

Natalia Lafourcade is in my opinion one of the best singer-songwriters in the world. Without even needing to add “female”/“Mexican” or whatever else. Her level of artistic talent deserves larger exposure throughout the world beyond the Spanish speaking Latinx Americans who make up the overwhelming majority of her current fan base. Hopefully she’ll succeed in extending her reach throughout the world very soon! (Who am I kidding, she been on her grind since like the year 2000 with her adorably rebellious pop punk-esque first release as a teen. Her sound is much more mature now btw lol)

As a Zydeco fan, I'd start with Clifton Chenier especially the album I'm Here that album was huge for me growing up!
Very surprised Hyperpop wasn’t on the final list especially considering it’s recent rise! Highly recommend the genre, the most iconic Hyperpop album is probably 1000 gecs by 100 gecs.
Also if anybody knows what genres Sewerslvt and Machine Girl would be let me know
Sewerslvt is mostly categorised under breakcore and depressive drum and base, not super familiar with machine girl so can't help you there.
Machine Girl makes jungle, breakcore and digital hardcore, mostly avoids being pegged into one genre but pulls from those

D is for Drum & Bass. If you're new to this genre I would recommend artists like Technimatic, Hybrid Minds, Nu:Tone, Metrik, Calyx & Teebee, Wilkinson, Sub Focus. Go treat yourself people! 😁

Kind of reminds me of when a time where a friend of mine and myself got into a battle of naming bands.
He'll name a band then I'll name a band. Until one of us couldn't remember another one.
And that whole scenario lasted about I think 2 hours maybe 3.
Then we both got bored.
It was fun. And stupid at the same time.
So happy to see Origami Angel on here, those guys are just a good time. Also tossing out Holy Fawn's Death Spells as a Blackgaze-esque album I just stumbled into and think is incredible.

Xote is great, I'd sure recommend Luiz Gonzaga as a whole, songs like Xote das meninas and Asa Branca are absolute classics, but a song itself sure needs to be Xiquexique, by Tom Zé, a masterpiece of Xote, for sure
As a Guadeloupean girl, Zouk is a music genre created in the 80s by a group from the French Caribbean. The group name is “Kassav” and the members are from both Guadeloupe and Martinique. Anything from kassav will do but “zouk la sé sel médinaman nou ni” is the zouk anthem.
Also there is a subgenre of zouk called “Zouk Love” it’s much slower and of course the main topics are love and relationships. “West Indies” by Patrick Saint-Éloi and “Le ou love” by Jean-Michel rotin are good exemples.
I feel like one of the most well-known Z genres (At least to me) isn't on that list.
Zolo!
It's basically like a super manic and quirky mixture of New Wave and Prog Rock. I haven't listened to a lot of it, but I would suggest either Nothing to Fear by Oingo Boingo or literally any album by The Cardiacs
I personally found out about Zolo through seeing Spark described as Zolo, and while I haven't heard anything I like quite as much as "Kimono My House" or "Propaganda" from other Zolo bands, its still a really cool genre
Oingo Boingo and Big Rock Finish. Love this guy.
I always liked music that sounded zolo. I juts never knew the name of it until recently.
Plunderphonics, future funk, jpop, noise, acid jazz, hypnagogic pop, neo psychedelia, experimental, and industrial hip hop are some of the genres I’d recommend to you.

Gothic country is a weird mixture of country, bluegrass, psychedelic rock, and depression. 16 horsepower is basically the Beatles of the genre and the defining album is Sackcloth n Ashes. It’s not for everyone, but if you like twangy music with dark atmospheres, it’s really great. Also check out Slim Cessna’s Auto Club and Wovenhand. Lyrical themes are usually biblical, but not in the way “Jesus loves me,” but more misanthropic like “God will strike you down and you will burn in hell eternally for your lust.”
If you're just now getting into K-pop, I absolutely recommend "The Perfect Red Velvet" by Red Velvet, it rules!
Here's one from me.
V for Vocaloid/Voice Synth music. It is unique in being tied to a medium, but that medium being that instead of a human vocalist being used, a vocal synthesizer is used, the most iconic of these vocal synthesizers being Hatsune Miku, a vocalist for Yamaha's Vocaloid software and Crypton Future Media's more recent Piapro NT software, though UTAU and Synth V as well as other Vocaloids have become more popular as well.
Like video game and film music, Vocaloid/Voice synth music is highly diverse, and ranges from anything from Ambient to Thrash Metal. Much of it is in Japanese, and is produced independently, but there are also large English and Spanish speaking communities as well, and the scene has a very large emphasis on independent artists.
Due to the anonymous nature of the medium allowing you to use a digital voice, topics such as abuse, bigotry, gender and sexuality, the education system, disability, childhood trauma and mental health are common, as are large overarching series with their own lore and worldbuilding, told through song, along with a lot of fairly run of the mill pop songs.
A few good albums to start with are:
- Worlds by Porter Robinson (yes, this is a vocaloid album! the female voice used on this album is the English vocaloid Avanna)
- ZERO-GO, Human, and Obscure Questions by PinnochioP (Japanese, Pop)
- Official Orange by Hachi (currently known as Kenshi Yonezu) (Japanese, rock)
- Kikuo Miku 6 by Kikuo (Japanese, Prog Pop??? Horrorcore??? It's a tough album to categorize) (Strong content warning)
- Unhappy Refrain by Wowaka (Japanese, J-Rock)
- GALAPAGOS and UNIQUE by UTSU-P (Japanese, Metal. If you like the DOOM OST, you'll like UTSU)
- For A Sick Boy by Yuyoyuppe (also metal, though it's more melodic)
- SYNTECH+ by Nostraightanswer (English, Soft pop)
- Spectrum, 715 and CMYK by CircusP (English, Pop, EDM)
- The Introduction (plus all his new singles) by KIRA (English, Pop, EDM, Hyperpop)
- Sim You Later by Flanger Moose (English, Rock, EDM)
- Tiara by Tiara (Japanese, I have no idea how to categorize this but it's pretty)

- Virtual Pop Star by Mitchie M (Japanese, Idol Pop)
- WEATHER STATION by Inabakumori. They're known for their song Lagtrain, and for using Kaai Yuki, a Vocaloid voiced by a six year old girl.
- Literally anything by Cosmo@BousouP/CosMo it's all speedcore and pop rock
- Literally anything by Hiigari Kiirai. They don't have an album yet, but their style is a mix electroswing and hardbass. No I am not joking.
- WAVE and -ERROR by niki. WAVE is all electro pop, -ERROR is all rock, both are wonderful.
- All of Maretu's work is great and widely considered iconic but I am going to issue a content warning since a lot of his work is about disturbing subjects and he is NOT subtle about any of it.
If you are going to need more narrowing down, I'd say that Niki, Hachi, Maretu, PinnochioP, Kikuo, UTSUP and, most importantly, Wowaka's work are all the most iconic here. From there, the world is your oyster, this is an INCREDIBLY diverse subculture.

Zarzuela is a form of spanish operetta. It appeared in the late 19th century and it remained a strong force 'till the 50s or so. It's almost exclusively comedy and it's structured like a musical but it's songs are more... operatic I guess.
To start I recomend "La Verbena de la Paloma" by Tomás Bretón. It's a classic. It's a story about jealousy and trying to marry rich.
Another good one is "La Gran Vía" by Chueca, in which streets in Madrid that are about to be demolished to make way for the new big road, have a conversation.
There is a huge language barrier tho. Since it is theatre musical, the story, dialogue and lyrics are important. Still, give it a try.

For Z I think Zeuhl is a pretty good genre for it.
Zeuhl is a freanch subgenre that originated from jazz and became an originator of prog rock, it is great one and I think one of the Magma's Üdü Ŵüdü album is pretty good and a great and underrated introduction to the genre even if it is safe to say it
You should check out the band Magma and the band Ruins for the genre Zeuhl. It's a genre where singers make up their own languages.
Z for Zheuhl Like Magma, Koenji Hyakkei or The Ruins. Zheuhl is some crazy Prog Rock, Fusion sound.

For good zeuhl, Ruins' compilation album 1986-1992 is great, especially "Praha In Spring". The band is Japanese and their inspiration is the originators of the genre, French outfit Magma. The drummer writes all the music and it's sung in a made up language.

Moon Safari by Air was on constant repeat in my old Accord’s cd changer back in like 2007/8 and I absolutely loved it. My hometown had a freak unusual snowstorm that year so my brain has forever linked the two in the inner fuzzy-feels of my soul. Also helped that I smoked a lot of marijuana back then lol.
And omg I absolutely ADORE Mon Laferte! You completely caught me off guard right when I was about to post my original comment above. I highly recommend checking out her music whether or not you understand Spanish. She’s incredible! She recorded a Japanese 60s style love ballad in both Spanish and Japanese. They’re both top notch. Check her out if any of that interested you. Or even if it didn’t sound appealing. She’s great regardless

Thanks for putting me onto "Be" by Common- just started listening and have never vibed more with something on the first listen, it's awesome! As to film scores, the 1995 Wuthering Heights score by Ryuichi Sakamoto is absolutely gorgeous and so underrated, I think because the film wasn't a huge success. But the melody and mood is indescribable, it captures the essence of the book but also stands alone as a fantastic piece of music. Even the paired-back version available on Spotify is gorgeous!

Clifton Chenier falls under the umbrella of Zydeco. it's like the Blues, only incorporating the accordion and the washboard, it's definitely worth checking out his song Louisana Blues
I don’t know if anyone has recommended you a Zeuhl album or not, but I would happily throw in K.A. by Magma. Their music features operatic vocals sung in their own made up language along with high energy technical instrumentation (it is a subgenre of prog after all). Their drummer and mastermind Christian Vander is very good at crafting chaotic rhythms and there’s definitely a bit of jazz influence as well.

For Zeuhl, I recomend Papangu's Holoceno. It's one of the most brutal and transcedental metal records to come out this year.
Zydeco is a lot of fun to listen to. I don't really have an album to recommend, but whenever I'm in the New Orleans area, I'll tune to a Zydeco radio station. Great part of the culture in South Louisiana.

Metal with Funk and Rap influences, was popular in the late 80s but then died suddenly.

Zydeco music is typically played in an uptempo, syncopated manner with a strong rhythmic core, and often incorporates elements of blues, rock and roll, soul music, R&B, Afro-Caribbean, Cajun, and early Creole music. Zydeco music is centered around the accordion, which leads the rest of the band, and a specialized washboard, called a vest frottoir, as a prominent percussive instrument.

Shout out for friend for the opera recommendation. The intermezzo from cavalleria rusticana is my favorite piece of music of all time. It was the theme song for raging bull and was in the ending of god father 3 iirc. Never felt as strong emotions listening to anything as I do that song.

Zouk is traditional Caribbean dance music usually sang in French or creole. I would recommend u look into Kassav. They would probably the easiest bang or artist to get into. The genre uses big band instruments and reggae on like beat depending on the song. As someone from a carriebbean descent it would be cool for more people in the west to learn about zouk.

i think twice's most recent album formula of love is the textbook example of what a cute bubblegum kpop release is and blackpink's latest album the album is the textbook example of what a badass more hip hop inspired kpop release is, and these two concepts cute and badass have been the most prominent concepts in all of kpop for the last 15 years basically and the aformentioned albums are representative for the last 5 years of their kpop concepts
For thrash, reign in blood is all you need
And then there is Frank Zappa who was a whole genre one it's one.

A great xote album from Brazil would be Luiz Gonzaga (the master of the genre), 50 ANOS DE CHÃO (50 years of floor). Another one by Elba Ramalho called ALEGRIA is also very iconic.

Zambian Rock is a style of psychedelic rock that originated and is played in (as the name would suggest) Zambia. Really cool stuff blending psych rock sensibilities with African style drums and rhythms

Zulu is a type of progressive rock. Personally, I don’t know that much about it, but I do know that the band Magma is regarded as the Zulu band.
A prominent "zef" group would be Die Antwoord. I haven't digged too deep into their discography, only cherry-picked songs I like. So ig start with their first album?

I bought it at a music store called reckless records (located here in chicago 💕) it's probably the oldest one i have, it's dated 1972. the first time i listened to it i was literally blown away by how unique it is. the drums and bass in part one are so /chef's kiss//💕💕💕 it's one of my fave cassettes that i own 💕
