I can't remember the exact wording of this, given the time that's passed since I heard it, but this boss and other moments all throughout the fromsoft expanded series always reminds me of what Miyazaki said once about his design philosophy, and how even when crafting these dark fantasy worlds he tries to inject dignity into things that might otherwise be considered grotesque, and that really makes such a difference with these games. This boss, by most metrics, is not at all pretty. It's a giant decaying reindeer skeleton in a gloomy cavern bone swamp. Yet the grace with which it moves, the lighting, and the music somehow make the experience a beautiful one in spite of the imagery we're looking at. It's really a microcosm of Elden Ring and these games in general; they never let you forget the danger and messed up nature of the world it's set in, but the intrigue and the beauty that's still there, and the odd respect that comes from them, is enough to draw you in and enthrall you regardless.
Yeah I've seen part of interview in comparison video Demon souls original vs remake. The amount of effort they put in games is ridiculous and nothing is accidental
100% , It's a simple fight mechanically, but it's a very majestic and artful fight more than many bosses. Playing as the Samurai, this was my first Great boss fight and it just made feel like I was playing Sekiro lol!
Same! Barely was able to beat it first try (Had pretty much no health! Couldn't see any red on my bar), but it's still my favorite because of how beautiful and graceful it was. Wish I didn't have to fight it lol
Yeah, i mean i am rewatching that boss fight months afterwards because it is so beautiful... I would like the whole From Software game in that kind of aesthetics and vibe, idk.. maybe inspired by Princess Mononke ( from other great Miyazaki .. ).
Had to come and watch this again because of just how stunning it was. I'm not very far in the game at all, but this is still maybe my favorite FromSoft boss of all time. The atmosphere and music are just stunning... So beautiful. I definitely noticed the calmer soundtrack helped me not panic much as well lol, so that's a bonus. I'm very interested to know the lore about it. I'm assuming it has something to do with Torrent, since it jumps in exactly the same way as Torrent and looks very similar.
Same! I really didn't want to kill it because of how graceful it was and how the music made me felt. It felt like the spirit should be guiding me on a journey and not be the boss fight of one. A really beautiful and graceful boss.
Maybe torrent is a descendant of the ancient spirit or at least a part of the same race. They move very similarly and even have horns/antlers (maybe torrent actually has baby antlers instead of horns). It’s crazy to think that once torrent becomes old enough to be considered ancient, he could become something like this boss
Truly unforgettable, this boss and the entire lead up to it, and I could easily have missed it if I hadn’t been exploring the woods and stumbled upon the elevator that took me down
I found it by running to the area map and then getting away asap because of the big bear. In my panic to escape I went down the elevator expecting a mini-dungeon or something, but no it was an entire area
I just beat this guy in my playthrough, absolutely breathtaking. The whole zone that precedes it and the arena setpiece itself are beautiful, as is the boss itself. While it is quite easy, it is still a very fun fight. Just watching this thing move around and glide through the air like Torrent is a treat. Definitely my favorite boss so far.
When I first fought this boss it felt like fighting an ancient creature like it was the last of it's kind fighting for its life... and when it was dead the silence of the arena made me feel a sorrow so powerful the arena was dotted with dead bones and weapons as if this species was hunted to near extinction... and I killed the last one
I didn't really move for a couple minutes after killing the spirit. I had to soak in what effect this boss had. I'm very early in my playthrough but I might say this'll be my favorite boss in Elden Ring
@@strogonoffcorefirst off, great username. Second, I think your take is correct; the Shattering disrupted the circle of life. Marika was trying to defy nature itself and when she smote the Ring down, Life and Death themselves were thrown into disarray. By putting this majestic creature down, you are freeing its spirit from the chains of Death that had been binding it down. By giving the Spirit an honourable death, you are taking a step to defy Marika, as is fitting for your quest to heal the unnatural damages that she, in her hubris, had caused.
This whole setting is incredible. The music is perfectly eerie and fitting. The Spirit's movements are graceful yet brutal, very primal and ethereal in nature. This has been one of my favorite moments so far!
This fight was the culmination of one of the best experiences I have had in any game. It all started with a cave under a bridge where I found the patches fight. After he became a vendor I just had to see what was in the chest. Naturally I was punished for my greed but also rewarded. Teleported between two enormous bears but also close to a map and a cool looking structure. Upon entering it I had discovered an extremely long elevator with a view that left me awestruck. Eight pillars later and I unlock this fight against against a hauntingly beautiful boss. All of it from checking one cave under a bridge, this game is beyond incredible.
That sounds like a story by itself. A journey of some wandering Tarnished, perhaps initially driven or, at least, tempted by greed, finds himself stranded in an unforgiving yet enrapturing wilderness. An adventure culminating in an epic and respectful duel with a majestic, ancient beast. One that has an eerie similarity to the Tarnished's own steed. Yet, it's just one path to explore and experience in Elden Ring.
The presentation is top notch. I saw people say this boss fight was “boring”, but that’s if you’re an adrenaline junkie for this game. Artistically intriguing, I infer this boss has more to say lore-wise rather than in difficulty, especially when noticing the boss’s move sets are similar to the Torrents traversal mechanics and essence.
This is easily my favorite boss in the game. The visuals along with the music made it an unforgettable experience that might not happen ever again. It's such a beautiful and majestic creature, I really felt bad when I defeated him.
Like many other things in the lands between, the ancestor spirit is trapped in a decaying body that can't die on its own because the rune of death has been sealed away. The ancestor spirit is in a similar state as the wandering nobles you find in limgrave, not quite alive but also not quite dead. I see killing this boss as a merciful act, allowing the ancestor spirit to leave the zombified vessel it's trapped in and be reincarnated anew.
this is so far my favorite boss purely cosmetically and thematically. The area around it and the music is tranquil. Whoever designed this deserves a thumbs up.
Is it normal that I had tears in my eyes fighting this boss? I didn't feel emotional fighting Gwyn or Artorias or Gael or any of them, yet this poor deer? I don't know why, but it just touched me.
@Viva Kreig Its poor state did it for me as well. Plus the fact that it's a symbol of worship. You're just barging in there and killing it. Something that beautiful. Kinda messed up. As usual, the Soulsborne protagonist just had to come in and destroy everything.
@@TheStraightestWhitest seeing how it's literally rotting alive and probably went as mad as the giants, we did a good thing by putting its spirit to rest.

The fact that you got a critical hit as the finishing a blow is the perfect climax to this epic battle. This fight will go down as one of those memorable moments in gaming for me.
I just finished this boss fight, and the music absolutely blew me away. The somber nature of it makes you realize you're not fighting something evil, but rather, a force protecting its home.
There is somethin with the pace and the staging of this fight. Most boss fights start with epic music and fucking blood and fire everywhere. This fight starts with a peaceful tribal melody and a majestic stag aproaching you slowly. it really caught me off guard
There’s something about Elden Ring that, even from the outside perspective of someone who hasn’t been able to play any of the souls-like games, really gets me. It’s feels cold but more alive than the others. Maybe it’s this boss and that one hug that makes me feel that way though.
My first souls-like game is Elden Ring and I just beat Ancestor Spirit in my first try. I still couldn't believe my eyes that I actually did it. It was the best experience I had in this game until now. Such a cinematic and gorgeous boss.

Favorite boss in all of elden ring goes to ancestral spirit from design, flow of battle, and music: S+. Good on ya, FromSoft.
This fight hit me hard. While you play as a Tarnished that originates from The Lands Between, I felt like an interloper entering this. I was use to the war and carnage above ground, crowns and lords and land grabs but when you enter the well it's in a state of serenity. Spirits living off the land like they did when they were alive. Surrounded by nature, undisturbed from the world above.
I really did feel like an intruder in the Siofra River. It took me a minute to realize the reason the spirit ancestral followers were attacking me- I was in their home, and they just wanted to defend it, just like they did when they were alive.
I haven't played all FromSoft Souls-like games (yet) but this boss gave me flashbacks to Sif. Particularly, with the Chasm of the Abyss. The effective build-up, unique arenas, up against a majestic yet imposing animalistic adversary, an immediate sense of respect and a bittersweet end to each duel. Coming out victorious but with questions and doubt. Both are among my favorite bosses in the series and some of the most memorable I've ever seen.
i just fought this guy but had to watch it again. just how graceful the entire fight was is fantastic. i beat him on my first try, but so far i think this boss had the most impact on me
Legitimately moved to tears by this boss fight. It felt like I had to kill something out of mercy, and felt sad doing it. Even being in the area before this fight felt like I was trampling on ancient grounds previously untouched by anything let alone a Tarnished. FromSoft continues to move me in ways other developers cannot.
You know how they dropped the trailer during Summer Game Fest last year? Probably everyone of us had their favorite moment. The brief few seconds of this very boss fight was mine. When I entered the room with the boss, I had the most incredible feeling I've ever had during a FromSoftware boss fight - I got so fucking moved..🥺 I literally fought him with tears in my eyes, to this beautiful music... Man, this game overwhelms me all the time, I'm 33h in and I've just had a culmination of emotions with this masterpiece... Thank You, FromSoftware!🥺🖤
Honestly the music is stunning and it is what made this fight creepy yet somehow beautiful, not an easy thing to pull off. Also what i personally find in a lot of Fromsoft games is that while most enemise are grotesque and very aggressiv, some i feel conflicted to kill. This one is a good example. You decide to summon it and then kill an ancient thing that has been there forever. Similar one would be the Serpent God in Sekiro or even the Divine Dragon however i don't think you actually kill the latter. But in both cases you defeat ancient creatures, last of their kind to obtain like some small thing to progress.
Yes this is absolutely a good introduction because it is one of the easier ones plus it isn't related to dark souls 1 to 3 so you don't have to worry about missing out on parts of the story
I really enjoyed this boss. But the reason I absolutely adore it as well is the music. It was so different from what I was expecting and I loved every second of it. 10/10 ost
I freaking love the music from the fight. And the fact we had to light up flames gets me thinking we brought I back to life to give it another chance to live again. Usually I’d get a feeling of conquering a boss afterwards but with this it felt like I was setting it to rest for good.
Exquisite! The music and the magic of the boss' moves is stunning. This is a true masterpiece. I ended up not killing this boss in my game, just so I can keep coming back to this encounter.
When I saw this guy in the trailer, I thought he would be the hardest boss for me, but after I beat him twice , each on my first try, I'm saddened that he wasnt as difficult as I hoped he would be. But that doesnt mean he isnt still one of my favorites!
such a turn when, after fighting these hideous nightmare monsters, you are taken to a calm, serene venue where you have to put your sword to this ancient, undying, beautiful creature.
This creature reminds me a specific samurai helmet decorated with antlers and now I can’t get the image of the samurai sprinting into battle this creature yelling “I am going to put your antlers on my helmet!” out of my head now.
Don't be sad. It's already "dead", unbound to the ties of physic and others. Life and death is part of his cycle, he'll simply reborn soon, not a care in the world. You didn't do anything bad -nor good-. Just another part of his endless cycle.
Considering i had just spent hours upon hours in caelid this was more than a shock to finally light the pillars and fight this boss. Kinda caught me off guard with the so much more calm tone. It felt more like a challenge to a worthy foe than picking a fight with a god. Also fought him with moonveil, adding another layer of mysticality to it as well.
I think i was a little "over leveled" for this boss, because I got him first try in like 1 minute, and I didn't even take damage 😅 I came here to listen to the sountrack, and I will say it's very Eerie. It's also a cool build up, and a very beautiful arena and enemy. Also, I didn't know you could do a critical on them when the glow gold like that, so I'm going to try it now, thanks to this video! :)

I wished it had more moves for such an interesting boss with a cool soundtrack.
The atmosphere of everything going on during this boss fight makes it so memorable.
This is definitely my favorite boss in the game. The boss, atmosphere and music are all hauntingly beautiful.
i just fought this guy but had to watch it again. just how graceful the entire fight was is fantastic. i beat him on my first try, but so far i think this boss had the most impact on me
Legitimately moved to tears by this boss fight. It felt like I had to kill something out of mercy, and felt sad doing it. Even being in the area before this fight felt like I was trampling on ancient grounds previously untouched by anything let alone a Tarnished. FromSoft continues to move me in ways other developers cannot.
Radahn too, he was suffering endlessly because of scarlet rot and using his power to not only keep his horse safe, but also hold up a meteor
I stumbled across the Eternal City in the early game, and I gotta say I wasn't disappointed
Makes me want to cry instantly, it's unreal.
Fun fact: one of the sounds this boss can make is also the same sound rabbits make in Don't Starve.
Man! When the Boss throws that magic spell on you and you can hear the animals mixed with the music… It sounds so cool and beautiful
Yo I’ve never played a Dark souls game. Is this a good introduction? I like that this one is open world so it intrigued me more than the others
Yes this is absolutely a good introduction because it is one of the easier ones plus it isn't related to dark souls 1 to 3 so you don't have to worry about missing out on parts of the story
Yup, this and demon's souls are the easier one to start your journey
Yes but get ready to die many times though.
Oh it’s not gonna be easier
It looks life if you choose magic then you can 100% fully finish the game
I don't know why, but I'm getting Shadow of the Colossus vibes with this one
Yeah I felt just as bad killing this boss as I felt after killing one of the Colossi.
Yup, but even sadder.
There needs to be an ost out there with the Hyena sounding noises sprinkled around.
Hyena noises? This is one I didn't expect to hear when all I hear are water dripping noises.
I really enjoyed this boss. But the reason I absolutely adore it as well is the music. It was so different from what I was expecting and I loved every second of it. 10/10 ost
Honestly one of my favorite fights in the game. The music is top freakin notch
I freaking love the music from the fight. And the fact we had to light up flames gets me thinking we brought I back to life to give it another chance to live again. Usually I’d get a feeling of conquering a boss afterwards but with this it felt like I was setting it to rest for good.
Just beat this boss- absolutely blew me away. The OST made me sad that I had to kill the beautiful, awe-inducing creature.
Having easy but memorable bosses is refreshing in a game that has so many random dungeon bosses with bullshit one shots and ganks
I died multiple times on purpose just so I could play this boss fight again and listen to the beautiful soundtrack.
Never in my life have I seen a more beautiful triple-jump
I’m watching this because I wish the OST had the haunting animal call as well. It sounds like a deer/elk and hyena almost ❤️
Hope you’re doing good my man
And i hope you're doing good as well, take care bro 🧡
Old video but still relevant. It shows how valuable can be to learn how to bait bosses to control their attacks. Clean work, as always.
such a turn when, after fighting these hideous nightmare monsters, you are taken to a calm, serene venue where you have to put your sword to this ancient, undying, beautiful creature.
just beat this boss today, it was a surprisingly peaceful and beautiful encounter
this is a setpiece boss, not designed to be challenging, but for the zone's atmosphere and lore.
Oh no the frigid outskirts strikes back.
Lol
This music is to die for
The only boss I wasn’t mad about the damage. It was so beautiful that I want the fight to be longer. Lol 😂
started ascending when i heard the music fr
This creature reminds me a specific samurai helmet decorated with antlers and now I can’t get the image of the samurai sprinting into battle this creature yelling “I am going to put your antlers on my helmet!” out of my head now.
I just came here after I thought this boss. Out of all the bosses I thought so far, this one i felt so guilty over.
Beat this boss on my first try. Was kind of sad because I would have very much liked to spend more time with it, not least for the epic soundtrack
Lol I held back. I really didnt wanna kill it. Just dodged its attacks easily and finally had to put it down.
Was so sad. Fuck
This was one of the most stunning, and depressing bosses I had to fight. It was just beautiful, but I felt sad killing it ; - ;
Don't be sad. It's already "dead", unbound to the ties of physic and others. Life and death is part of his cycle, he'll simply reborn soon, not a care in the world. You didn't do anything bad -nor good-. Just another part of his endless cycle.
one of my best souls like experiences. the atmosphere that fromsoftware set up is amazing
The blue fire sounds like water droplets mixed with wolf noises, my god I just love this boss so much!
. It was just beautiful, I really felt bad when I defeated him.
This made me fall in love with Elden Ring
Everything about this is so incredibly beautiful, I just had to come back
This boss fight was so beautiful and amazing, i actually was a bit high leveled for it so i used the horn bow and it was perfect, felt like in a movie
I think i was a little "over leveled" for this boss, because I got him first try in like 1 minute, and I didn't even take damage 😅
I came here to listen to the sountrack, and I will say it's very Eerie. It's also a cool build up, and a very beautiful arena and enemy. Also, I didn't know you could do a critical on them when the glow gold like that, so I'm going to try it now, thanks to this video! :)
pour les français qui connaissent Ziak, à 0:52 c'est le début de l'instru de "même pas un grincement"
When I first saw this boss, I was in awe of it. Absolutely breathtaking.
How do you get the second part of the OST to play?
You have to find the Regal Ancestor which will enact the full song
I need an ost that includes the spirits breath attack. The howling and barking of animals makes the fight so much more powerful.
