D&D Story: The Legend of the Legendary Aligaros Ashuin!

  • This is an animated Dungeons and Dragons story from my first character for 5 edition D&D. I only had a few minutes to make up his backstory, so I just kind of BS'd it and started playing him through. Without a backstory slenderman couldn't torture him, he didn't understand magic items, and he would often use his 'mind axe' to solve problems. Hope you guys enjoy!
End song: "My Train's A Comin'" from the UA-cam Audio Library.

    Aligaros has a great backstory.
He was a psychic, kicked out of school cause he kept getting black out drunk.
He woke up in a forest and hallucinated some dude who told him to go on a quest.
Due to the fact he could only use one spell, Mind Axe, he decided to take up a real axe to honor his lumberjack father.
Of course he never remembered to use Mind Axe cause he is always drunk.

      @Perzyn 5 років тому +286

      No, too much details.
Aligaros had an epic backstory, ripe with epic deeds, sworn enemies and stalwart friends. But he spent the whole of it black out drunk, so the only part he remembered was being in the forset.

He was a psychic or wizard who sped so much time drunk, he forgot all his backstory and how magic works. He could use the mind axe all the time, but because he forgot all of the magic lore, it took him so long to actually do something. Oh and his drinking habit totally destroyed his non-physical abilities :D

Considering the amount of times he's been blackout drunk, you could have hundreds of different things happen to this character, examples being...
A bookie comes to collect a debt he made, while drunk
Someone comes an expects him to fulfill a promise he made, while drunk
a paladin shows up for a duel he made, while drunk
A cult of followers proclaims him the messiah because of a miracle he performed, while drunk
His illegitimate child claims him as his father that had left his mother, while drunk
He contracts lycathropy after seducing and bedding a werewolf, while drunk
A princess of the king chases him down and plans to run away with him and get married because he serenaded her while she was on her balcony and he was in the street, while drunk.

I had a character go werewolf once because I forgot he'd been bitten during a fight. Our sorceress came up with the idea of trying to train his wolf-form to follow orders like training a dog.
Our minotaur, on the other hand, wanted to throw my dwarf into the middle of a slaver/bandit camp while he was transforming and let the werewolf kill half the camp for our group.

one of my characters was driven insane by an eldritch horror, he has a crippling fear of flying milk (and other airborne white liquids) nobody is entirely sure why, he's fine with grounded white fluids, and puddles of white fluids don't bother him either, he'll even drink milk if presented with it (so long as it's not flying). but the moment a drop enters free fall he loses his shit.
note he is also an undead mummy because the eldritch horror made him immortal, but not unaging.

I actually ran into something very similar to the true fear thing, except I kinda put the GMs expectations on their head he asked me what horrible terrifying thing my character saw (a character with no real interesting backstory hooks or major traumas and who became an adventurer because he just really enjoyed it. he was chaotic neutral but 90% of the time may as well have been neutral good). my answer was simple: a peaceful world. Ultimately my character (name Trosh Vernon) loved being an adventurer, it was my most fulfilling thing he had ever done an any attempts at settling down left him feeling bored and hollow. What is an adventurer but a less specialized mercenary? without conflict there was no adventure, no quest, no obstacles. His biggest fear was being confronted with the fact that deep down, he loved the violence, the cheap thrills, and nearness of death. Deep down, he loved the rush of hacking those orcs to pieces, the triumphant superiority he felt when he surprised them with a fireball. Sure he liked to think of himself as a good person who will save the innocent, but in truth, when he looks at a peaceful village that's not under attack, that doesn't need saving, he feels disappointed and deep down, wishes danger to come to them, so that he can have his adventure.

Anyone watched "The Gamers" and remember that one scene where they come across a river, and there's a silence, then the GM says to the elf,
    "Uh, aren't you forgetting something?"
    And the player went "what?"
And the GM goes "You're character's paralyzing fear of the water?"
And the player says "oh" and the character immediately started screaming as the other characters pull him away?

Reminds me of a character I had that was cursed with what we called "Fear of the week." She was perfectly fine, then the DM would say "You are now terrified of water." We were in some hot springs, so she of course started screaming. I ran into the building stark naked, followed by my half naked companions trying to stop me. It was...and interesting experience to say the least. Or the time I was scared of books, so I tried to burn our Wizards spell-book, fun times. He was never malicious about it, usually making no difference in combat or the like. It was just a fun little thing for when we were between plot points.

Another good scene (later after the river "incident") is when the player rolled a new character who just happen to be on the way:
"You see a young man standing in the ruins. He's dressed in flowing magic robes and has an air of mystery around him. Remember, you've never met this guy before, the last guys tried to kill you and you're standing in the ruins of an evil, cursed castle. Just act appropriately."
"You seem trustworthy. Would you care to join us in our noble quest?"
      "Yes. Yes, I would"
And that's all how the new wizard joins the group after they accidentally killed the old one and looted his stuff.

I use the following home-brew rules for drunkedness in D&D:
Each time a player drinks alcohol, they make a con save. At first, it's just DC5, but for each extra drink, the DC increases by 2 (or more for strong drinks). If they fail by less than 7, I roll on the drunken shenanigans table. If it fails by 7 or more (or a nat 1), I roll on the Night on the Town table. Also, if the players want to do something extra, let them. And feel free to add more
    Drunken shenanigans 1d10:
1 - You try to sing/perform. Charisma check with disadvantage
2 - You try to fight a strong or weak npc (Brute or Commoner, 50/50). Weapons are used
3 - Same, but without weapons.
4 - You lose your clothes and money
5 - You promise something stupid
6 - You try to steal something valuable. Let the players decide, checks with disadvantage
7 - You try to steal something worthless. Let the players decide, disadvantage
    8 - You're robbed
9 - You try to show off. Any check with disadvantage
    10 - You want another
Night on the Town 1d8, roll two times on the DS table as well.
1 - You wake up at home.
2 - You wake up in the bed of someone you really should've avoided
3 - You wake up in the bed of an NPC you like (or another PC, if they both got drunk)
4 - You wake up in the bed of an NPC you don't like (or just a random NPC)
5 - You wake up in a ditch or back street
6 - You wake up in prison, 10% chance of a serious crime
7 - You wake up in a temple
    8 - You got married.

My new favourite character’s backstory is Vivian: the dragon’s assassin. She was raised by a green dragon who trained her to stab his enemies and when Vivian escaped was again kidnaped by a necromancer who she killed rather brutally. What’s funny is she’s so stupid, she’s completely unaware about the darkness in her backstory.

I have a backstory for him. When he was young, he was inducted into a school for mind magic, a lot like Hogwarts. In his 18th and final year, being the dumb and troublemaking mind wizard he was, he pulled a senior prank that went *SO* wrong, it got him thrown out of school, and he was treated to the worst punishment the not Ministry of Magic could dole out, he had all his memory of magic removed, and he was thrown into the woods, with everything but the first 7 years of his life gone. He was then approached by the mysterious figure. The figure sensed massive amounts of power, as the, let’s say, Republic of Wizardry(?) did not have the power to take away his magic. The mysterious figure happened to be looking for adventurers, but the caliber of this wizard was so great, he didn’t expect to be able to persuade him to go on the mission. The figure dropped to his knees, being a wizard himself he felt it was the respectful thing to do. He said “What brings you hear, oh powerful mind wizard?” “ I was hoping you could tell me that...”, Aligaros replied, “I have no idea where I am”. “What?” Asked the hooded figure. In response, Aligaros said “Yeah, I remember my name is Aligaros Ashuin, and that I went to school, and had friends? And then...” he paused, “... something, bad, happened. Then I woke up here” he finished. Seeing a great opportunity the figure stood up in haste, and said “Would you want to go on an adventure?”, Aligaros replied “Yes!”. He usually wouldn’t have, but something sparked in his head when he heard those words. “Would you like to go on an adventure?”... He knew those words... It was the first thing someone ever said to him... Someone who told him he had... Something...
The figure handed him an axe, “although it looks like a normal axe,” he attempted to inform Aligaros, “it’s imbued with a powerful mental magic, that will allow you to wield it with proficiency, and give it an extra kick...” but Aligaros wasn’t listening, “Oooh, shīny” he said, cutting of the strange figure as they ended their sentence. The figure introduced Aligaros to the others, and sent them on an adventure they would never forget... there was one thing to be remembered, though. At night, plagued by the words always in the back of his head, “Would you like to go on an adventure?”, when his mind was empty of all other things, not a rare occurrence, he focus on these words. They made him, unhappy, often angry, so he would drink his problems away. The alcohol would loosen his mind, and therefore the already poorly cast memory spell, and he would remember. Outraged, he would attempt to finish his prank, and do it right this time, just to spite those who took everything from him. To Aligaros, the two where oddly linked, finishing the prank, and regaining his lost life. Although, he was hammered, absolutely plastered, so he’d mess up every time, usually resulting in minor criminal charges. He would wake up in jail, and with the alcohol went the loosened memory charm, and went his memory, including, because of the large use of magic, and alcohol, everything after he remembered, and until he woke up. It is said, he now keeps himself constantly boozed, until one day he can release himself from the hell of loosing his past life to an innocent but woefully poorly planned prank. Maybe I should write?

The problem is that boring people make for dull adventures. And really, Adventurers are, inherently, not boring, because they are motivated to go beyond the stagnant, stable existence of most people. A person disinclined to seek out danger is unlikely to ever do so. Instead, they are liable to assume a job as a shoe-maker or something, because stable employment that avoids risk will satisfy that person's needs ably.
Look at it this way: a person willing to descend into a dungeon, fight monsters, plunder tomes of ancient lore, and fight for every scrap of treasure is, by nature of definition, Not Boring. Even if they are the most milquetoast person, they are still an adventurer.

His parents are still alive, he's welcomed back home anytime he wants, he's not hated by everyone who sees him. Hell, most of the time my character was the most well liked because he genuinely was a happy guy. A stark contrast to the rest of the group where everyone else seemed to mope about because of some tragic thing that made them hold to themselves and not trust the world. Only reason he's with these guys is because they are strong and travel a lot.

The second serious character I made was a simple cleric of Chauntea, goddess of agriculture. He had a good upbringing on a farm, decided he wanted to go on an adventure, did til ran out of money, went home, joined the church, and was chosen by the Goddess. Went from "escaped from megalomaniacal sorcerer elven father and being burned to death by a pit fiend" to "a little jaunt and religious education."

It's generally been my experience, that when a Player doesn't write a reasonable effort for backstory, it's open invitation for the rest of the table to creatively suggest, vote, and derive a backstory for that Player...
    ...AS WE GO.
Now, for many of us dubiously more seasoned Players, this usually isn't a very big issue. It can be a lot of fun and humor to explore a backstory we don't create "all on our own"... AND it can get the rest of the table invested into a PC that they might not ordinarily invest in so easily.
However, there are some tables/circles where the practice can create... um... problematic consequences. As one proceeds through the game, there's usually at least one "that guy" (or gal) who simply must suggest the most ridiculous and stupid (if comical) backstory ideas to plaster all through said "unprepared PC's life"... Sometimes, it can even be "with malicious intent" as if the Player is being punished for not writing up a complete Character.
I would urge some discretion in applying this notion at your own tables/circles for that very reason. While it is fun to help creatively with a PC who's Player lacks the time or creativity to generate a believable or useful backstory, we (Players AND GM's) should remember to be generous enough to allow for a relatable explanation for backstory even for the weirdest or least desired PC's at our tables. We are ALL here to have fun first, after all. ;o)

After growing up and officially becoming a paladin she is setting off to find that girl and on the way dreams of becoming a rogue. She also really likes pranks and thinks the pranks she does are more rogue like than they actually are. She's not the brightest tool in the shed but she tries hard and that's endearing. I really want to make her succeed

@@anon2447 I dont know about her comparing to rose Cinderella since I'm not familiar with the character. I'm deffinately going to take your chest suggestion though. The first time i played her she tried to spike a drink, but she thought that just meant putting something unexpected in a glass of alcohol. On the spot she tried to put a cherry stem lying around into one of the partys drinks. Totally failed and the bartender gave her a dirty look. I totally imagined her thinking it was a brilliant prank and being legitimately dissapointed she got caught. I hope that gives you a little insight to her character. Other than her love of pranks and admiration for noble thieves she is a pretty standard paladin.

My DM did a similar turn-their-darkest-moment against them thing. It was a Dark Souls themed campaign, and we were fighting Sen, who in this interpretation was a powerful psychic magician. My Cleric relived the slaughter of his covenant and his own demise as we tried to hold back the tide of hollows from the First Flame, and our Deprived was forced to watch his village get ransacked by Capra Demons again. Our Pyromancer, however, didn't have a backstory. The DM worked around that by having Sen get really angry that he couldn't read him, and start hurling abuse about how the Pyromancer came from nothing. Presumably that will be a plot point once we get to the Great Swamp.

2 min to make a backstory? That's plenty of time!

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 5 років тому +4

Exactly. A backstory doesn't need to be minutely detailed and intricate. It just needs to tell us 1) where the character came from, 2) how they got here, and 3) what their motivations are going forward.
Here's one: a second son of a noble, who loved reading and learning as a child. His fascination with scholarship led to study of magic. So he read a bunch of magic books, until he became a wizard. Since he's now come to the limits of what he can learn from the books he has available, he's going out adventuring to find forgotten lore, and amass treasure that he can use to buy more books. And maybe create his own wizard tower, so he can research magic further.
The details took a bit to hammer into place, but the basic premise took longer to _type_ than it did to think of. A character doesn't need a novel's worth of backstory. They just need compelling motivation. And "compelling" can be as dirt simple as "I love to learn, and want to do more of it", because it stems from fundamental motivations common to the human condition. Lots of people love to learn. Other people have a desire for wealth, or harbor anger for wrongs committed against them (real or imagined), or want to build something of lasting value, or simply want to do good. What matters is that these motivations are strong enough to get the character out adventuring, instead of seeking other means of pursuing their goals, or else living a normal life and stewing impotently in their unfulfilled desires.

  • @Bluecho4
    @Bluecho4 5 років тому +9

I tend to think that elaborate backstories are sort of a dead-end, in terms of character creation. Now, I love _Lore_ as much as the next nerd. But Lore is only useful if it informs the current story. You don't need a hugely involved backstory. You just need to know what your character _wants_ , and maybe why they want it. Even the latter part is somewhat optional, since, to me, the best motivations are rooted first and foremost in the human experience. Broad imperatives don't need to be explained or justified, if they are rooted in love, greed, resentment, nobility, curiosity, or the like. The particulars may differ, but the base desires are common to all people, and can affect everyone at some point in their lives.
Not coincidentally, these desires - these aspects of the human condition - work great for establishing the _real_ purpose of a character: to provide Motivation to action.
In my mind, every player who shows up at the table should be able to answer these questions first and foremost: Why is your character adventuring? What is their Motivation? Why are they raiding dungeons, fighting street samurai, or involving themselves in vampire politics? Rather than, say, becoming a shoe-maker or retiring to a study to read for decades? And what
Making a backstory can, yes, be _very_ useful for story-telling and roleplay, and doing so really helps your GM. You should always be looking for ways to make the GM's job easier, since they have enough on their plate as it is. But Motivation itself is a storytelling engine. The best and most rewarding games can arise entirely from a player being _proactive_ about where and how they adventure. It's a better situation than having the GM twist themselves into knots, trying to _force_ you into engaging with a story.
Entire sagas can arise from a player pointing in a random direction on the map and asking, "what's out here?", followed by the GM saying, "You don't know. Why don't you find out?" And then the PC just goes there, and sees where it leads.
Having a PC be self-motivated can be tricky for a GM, but only if they see it as an impediment to their own masterfully crafted tale, rather than as an opportunity to create dynamic stories. If a PC wants to found their own fortress or thieves guild or wizard's tower or temple, that creates possibility space for the GM to create stories around the formation and maintenance of those structures. If the PCs seek a magic item or a lost secret or books of magical knowledge, the GM can easily place those things at the end of whatever elaborate adventures they want to run the players through.
An elaborate backstory can be all well and good, but is less than useful if it doesn't tell us what the PC wants and why they seek it through adventuring. Whereas there's nothing more compelling - from the subjective perspective of the players and their GM - than a character who _wants_ something, and will go to great lengths to pursue it. Even if it's something as simple as "I want to become a lord by my own hand", or "I hate X person", or "I have a deep, abiding love of learning", or "I have the power to do good, so that's what I'll do", or "I have a goal, I need wealth to achieve it, and adventuring could make me rich quick".
Best of all, even simple motives can provide backstory hooks, since a character's abiding goals inform us about their character and what they value.

i have three standard backstories for creating characters and not come super cliche like the brooding loner
      1. His hometown was stricken by an unknown sickness and some people have died but there's still time to save the rest everyone so he's adventuring to find the cure, also his family is still alive and not all of them are sick, but enough of them are sick to prompt him to find the cure, and he knows tha tbeing friendly and coopeartive is a way more efficient way to get people's help that being a brooding loner that doesn't share his problems.
      2. Character wants to open a 5 stars restaurant so he travels the world looking for the best flavors and ingredients ever so that his menu is always top notch, plus looking for merchants to learn the tricks of a succesful business.
      3. He is raving mad and thinks he's a spy, he goes to other nations "secretly" (he basically tells everyone that he's a spy) gathering information, finding and recording what the thinks are weaknesses and weak spots of other nations so that eventually his glorious nation can exploit those weak spots if need be.

My favourite backstory is fairly simple. Kid grows up in your typical village and meets barbarian adventurer who regaled him with stories of his adventure. This creates a sense of wonder and awe. Over the years he learned from this man until he stopped coming back. Many years later he decides to go on adventures! That's it. No other motives or wants. He adventures for the love of adventuring. I only added the man in there to give my GM something a bit more substantial to work with for the character arcs he had planned on doing later.

SaberShock could also be that your PC is from a poor background and the family trade hardly covers the families debts, so in an effort to make good money like the Barbarian adventurer you had known in your youth you decide to try your hand at adventuring.
Still a basic backstory but gives some more motivation for why your character decided that persuing a high risk high reward lifestyle rather than just setting up in a steady trade

    Q&A Character Creation Backstory.
    1. Where was your character born? (don't have to do this one right away if you do not know the map of the world, + it's best to work it out with the GM)
    2. Who are the parents? (there jobs, how they meet each other, and personalities. There is also adoption in to the family and if so how where you adopted.)
2a. Are they alive and are there more?
    3. What was the character doing before level one?
    4. Why did the character leave home?
    5. What did they leave behind?
    6. What does your character want?

1: Boring little farming village where nothing of excitement really happens.
2: farmers, working a small godforsaken plot of land barely able to make ends meet.
2a: parents worked themselves to death trying to scrape a living together out of the dirt.
3: prior to level one my character was following the same path as his parents, working hard to try and make the farm he inherited work.
4: one evening a small band of adventurers stay at his home for the evening and in talking to them he realises there is a world and riches to be had outside of his boring little town and dead end farm.
5: he sells his small plot of land to a larger neighbouring farm and with what little money he made from the transaction left for pastures new, with no reason to go back.
6: the character wants a life of grand adventures, with high risks and even higher rewards. Just like the ones that small traveling band of adventurers had.
Never actually played DnD or any other tabletop RPG, so do you think this is enough to make a semi interesting character or is it to boring a backstory?

@@themadhammer3305 It's a fine backstory and does not have to be exciting at all. I played D&D when I was younger and started getting back in to it recently by Fantasy Grounds (tho there is Roll20, but that is more expensive in the long run. FG my have a high price to pay at first, but when you pay the one time for a lifetime it beats out a monthly pay).
Of course you can still play without paying for anything on either one and you can find a group on both. All you gotta do is download the FG demo to play and Roll20 is a browser base so all you need to do is to sign up.
Right now i'm in a group playing every thursday online (only been 3 weeks and only 3 days). I like the story telling and the acting & the mechanics help you improve your character (witch is kind of new to me since only playing up to AD&D and coming back to it about 20 years later or more).
All & all it's fun and you should try it out with a one shot to see if you like it.

Am I the only one here, who would have spent more time thinking of ways to keep that guy from coming back from the dead? Like did you try cutting him up into several pieces (and then splitting among the party or around several hundred miles even), or boiling his corpse, then dipping in acid, then pouring molten iron over, then burying in a deep grave. or if you are really worried about things like true resurrection, bring his corpse to a necromancer and raise him as a zombie (don't know about 5th, but traditionally mutilating a body, or being undead stopped even true resurrection as it bound the soul to the body).
