As some have already pointed out, it was in fact Marni Nixon - not Marni Dixon - who provided the voice for Audrey Hepburn's songs. It seems I managed to misread this from my own script...

Based on 'Pygmalion' the story of the caterpillar that turns into a butterfly is always successful⛪️I was reading that 'My fair lady' was a musical with Julie Andrews' performance was decisive huge success on Broadway🎵 🎶In 1963 Warner Bros. decided to make the movie BUT, they despised Julie Andrews and instead put Audrey Hepburn🌷🌹who was the highest grossing movie star!🍰Hepburn was not a singer and her voice was dubbed by a professional soprano.

@@becom2625 Warner Brothers did not despite Julie Andrews. Don’t know where you got that. Ms Andrew’s simply did not covey the cinematic magic that Hepburn did. The camera loved Hepburn and designer Cecil Beaton was delighted to dress her magnificently. Can there be a more magical scene in cinema than when Eliza descends the staircase ready for the ball.

I want to correct your statement that the movie "in 1964 it won the Oscar for Best Picture." (9:29) It actually won the Oscar in April 1965 for being the best picture of 1964. I would also like to point out that six singing words in the film were NOT dubbed by Marni Nixon, and they were, "Sleep, sleep, I couldn't sleep tonight." Listen very carefully to the first 30 seconds of this video and you will hear the difference: ua-cam.com/video/hA9bEKKxTNU/v-deo.html

It is memorable because it is bluntly terrible, but it goes perfectly well with the musical's hideous ending that burns Shaw's play to the ground.

Actually, as Ms. Andrews herself would always relate, she was an unproven commodity when it came to box office,, and Ms. Hepburn was, many times over. Andrews made three films, Poppins, The Americanization of Emily, and The Sound of Music, which had yet to be released. Once released, she quite rightly became a national treasure for all to enjoy. On a side note, check out the late Dame Wendy Hiller's performance in the 1938 film, "Pygmalion," opposite Leslie Howard as Professor Higgins. She is absolutely bloomin' good.

Ok, where to begin... Yes, it's a very fine film in all the ways you described it - and here comes the inevitable "but" - Shaw has a definite mindset about class and society which was much clearer in Pygmalion than in MFL, but one little bit crept into the film somewhat unscathed, which I think bears mentioning. The father being swept up as some kind of popular moralist was to me very interesting even when I saw the movie at a very young age. There was a depth to the father's character that was more interesting to me than the more traditional fairy-tale like elements of the movie. It was a concept that stuck with me, leading to a lot of other reading and great discussions.

I had to check, and I was right. This review is 5 years old. It doesn't suffer from the new attitude that this film's ending is somehow cringe. Apparently modern sensibilities are offended that Eliza came back at the end, where upon Higgins commands her to fetch his slippers. Honestly, it's sickening how our young people have been brainwashed into thinking every story that doesn't feature a girl boss is hopelessly dated. Your review was spot on! And I'm glad to see it. Eliza forced Higgins to see her as a person, and not only a person, but one he had to respect! We all know Eliza got her own back in the end, even if today's audiences are too dumb to see it. Bravo!

    • @janetkizer5956

An ending in which Eliza doesn't return to Higgins is what Bernard Shaw wrote himself, not some new 'woke' generation. Go back to school and learn something.

    • @maryloumawson6006
      @maryloumawson6006 9 місяців тому +1

@@janetkizer5956 You're right of course. It's not Shaw's ending. It's the ending that audiences have loved for generations. I don't need to go back to school to appreciate it. But you could learn some manners. Although where you could learn that these days is questionable. Certainly not at school, where they only teach how to take offense and be offensive.

Poor ending. The original story and previous versions end with Eliza being a fully developed individual and absolutely not with him. He would never see her as an equal and she has stepped into her own and deserves someone who sees her as she is now, not what she was or as someone who owes him.

I absolutely agree. The best musical ever! And Audrey is magnificent as Eliza, from beginning to end. She should have been Oscar nominated. Rex Harrison was not the first or second choice for Higgins. Cary Grant was first choice but Alan Jay Lerner told Jack Warner that his English had s as touch of cockney. Second choice after LAWRENCE OF ARABIS was Peter O’Toole who was offered n $450,000 but he wanted a box office percentage. No one was going to get a percentage, so he was out. For $200,000, because there really wasn’t anyone else, was Rex Harrison. Audrey Hepburn was first choice for Eliza and she received $1 mil. Julie Andrews was not considered because she had zero box office recognition and this would be an expensive film. Second choice after Hepburn was Elizabeth Taylor who would have been better since she had more fire. James Cagney was sought for Eliza’s father but he had retired so Stanley Holloway from the stage production was used. The dubbing of Hepburn was poorly done and it shows. Because Vincent Minnelli wanted a percentage, he was passed over for George Cukor.

I often wonder what George Shaw would have made of the film. Given that he intended his play (his ply?) to be a biting social commentary and the film was deliberately made as a pure comedy, I suspect he would have hated it.
One thing that astonished me when I heard it was the identity of the actor who played Freddy Eynsford-Hill, the thwarted love interest of Eliza Doolittle. It's Jeremy Brett, later to play one of the most convincing versions of Sherlock Holmes. I kid you not!
We in the MGTOW community tend to regard Professor Higgins as something of a hero in our cause, as someone who sees relationships with women for exactly what they are, and the song "Let a Woman in Your Life" that he sings is something of an unofficial anthem for us.

richardkbowles. I read Michael Holroyd's biography of Shaw several years ago. Holroyd says Shaw was approached several times by producers who wanted to make a musical comedy out of Pygmalion. He refused them all. They had to wait until after he died in 1950.

The best of acting-vocals-costumes! Marni Nixon has done an beautiful job of Eliza's vocals, Audrey Hepburn the most beautiful and nuanced acting and Lerner & Lowe's most accomplished musicals. All the actors cast are just delightful. And thanks for not denigrating the use of Marni Nixon's lovely voice and interpretive musical acting! I hope reviewers and critics can finally come to appreciate all these incomparable elements and not keep repeating the same old points that Audrey did not sing her own vocals. 60+ years is quite long enough to perpetuate these ridiculous statements. Having a musical background, I lament the (now) customary use of actor's voices used when they are, shall we say, vocally challenged. In a musical, the music should be respected, appreciated, and performed by the best musicians. (Recent case in point, "Les Miserable's" the movie. How's that for an embarrassment?!)

Disney was going to delay Poppins when he heard that MFL was going to be made so that Julie could do MFL if she was cast in it. Julie’s star turn in Poppins was never in jeopardy.
I love Audrey in everything she has ever done, including MFL in which she is absolutely loverly. However, she simply could not sing. (check out the recordings of her vocals for the film edited into it, on UA-cam) The very few things they permitted her to sing got by, but she really needed to be dubbed by Marni.

Boy watching this really shows how degenerate and cheap movies have become. There was something very wholesome and moral about movies like this, a very positive and uplifting social force.
A commemoration to a truly wonderful bygone age where the Anglo-American civilisation stood for courage, morality and virtue.

Favorite film. Looked at it on VHS tape every opportunity as a child.
However, the ending caused some controversy, the likes of which will become increasingly glaring In today's environment of female empowerment.

The Ending is Beautifully Nuanced, I’m sorry some Pinked Haired Feminist doesn’t get subtlety, one of the central themes of the play is Higgins struggle to express emotion, hence his final line is really him saying I love you, in his own way

Audrey Hepburn is bad in this film apart from the fact she doesn't sing, her cockney accent is appalling. She doesn't cope with the transition as her performance in the early part of the film is dreadful. Its only the excellent performances by the rest of the cast that carry her through the film.
Shaw wrote a play about the hypocrisy of the British class system, which was lost in Miss Hepburn's performance.

Best filmed musical? Sorry, it's an often leaden slog, in which even the best moments, brilliant on stage, get buried or passed by. Disastrous to have Hepburn's numbers dubbed; they seem disembodied. The décor and costumes, so close, loose their witty charm and become self-conscious. Not a total failure, but not a success either. Grade: B.

It would have been more disastrous had we been forced to listen to Audrey’s flat singing voice ; the part demands a soprano.
In other words , Audrey was miscast and not casting Julie Andrews is a travesty.

The ending, and this is very important, is not faithful to the book. If you have not read the book, you really shouldn't review this--though I liked the review.
    Still.

Mary Poppins sucked, and the best musical ever made was _The Sound of Music_. They should have cast Julie Andrews.
