My mom (and I) left a bad situation at one point in my childhood. I remember one of the things she was saddest to leave behind was leaving her lilies that she had custom ordered over time and had a whole swath of the garden dedicated to. Luckily she was able to contact the new owner of that house several years later and split and replanted them in her new home - more tears ensued.

So happy for your mom. The new owners must have realized the beauty she created.

My mom died in 2012. I had many things to take care of after that, including selling her home. At 7:00 pm, the night before the homebuyers were to take possession of the home, I remembered my mom's beautiful lilies. I drove to the house with a few shovels and a truck bed full of pots and spent the next 6 hours digging them up. I took them all back to my own home and spent the entire night replanting them all using a spotlight for light. Over the years, those lilies of my Mom's have multiplied and they will always be the most prized and loved flowers in my garden. 💓

My wonderful little neighbor, who's 84, bought me my first Canna Lilly Cleopatra. I have a special pot for it and have it growing on my front porch so he can see it from his porch as well. Nearly made me cry! Warms my heart each time I see it. He's unable to garden any longer but has several cannas all around his porch and they are gorgeous.

Last year, I bought an Asiatic Lily & potted it. I've learned a lot about flowers in the past year, but at the time I didn't even know it would come back! I left the pot outside all winter & this spring 21 lilies came back from that one plant! I put them in the ground pretty late this spring (they already had buds), so I didn't know what to expect. Now, they've all bloomed, except for one tiny one that didn't root & I'm so excited to see how many come up in the ground next spring! ❤️🥰

The day lillies always remind me of summer at our family cabin in the mountains. I’ve planted them at every home we’ve lived in. The Stella doro yellow lillies are my favorite to give clumps away to new gardeners. A sure fire plant that 🌸 flowers twice a year and keeps it’s green leaves until fall. Try them!

Hi Laura, thank you so much for your inspiration all year long. You are such a motivator to me. Because of you our garden looks much better and I even tried vegetables again. Yes, the “lilies” Laura inherited are Hemerocallis commonly called daylilies, not a true lily that’s planted as a bulb but instead as rhizomes. In the Midwest, where I live, that particular orange daylily grows on most farms, in the wild, and in roadside ditches…….so much so that they’re known as ditch lilies. There are hundreds of daylily/Hemerocallis cultivars in a variety of yellows, pinks, reds, and purples extremely popular throughout the Midwest since they grow just about anywhere and most always look good. Laura’s orange Hemerocallis (“daylily, Tiger Lily, ditch lily”) gets little respect from so many gardeners in our area that it made me smile when I saw how much she loved her inherited “lilies”, and it reminded me that beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder. I love that there’s always something to learn about gardening……Thank you, Laura for teaching me about so many beautiful varieties of plants I knew nothing about before I started watching you!

We have orange daylilies in Connecticut also. Almost every other house has some on the property. Around a mailbox/stump, on the side of the road, near the rock walls. Can just take a ride around the neighborhood and see them in bloom now. Kind of a tradition to have some now.😀

I planted them from bits by the railroad when my kids were small and I was broke-then I fell in love with them. I have literally thousands of them. I use them to edge the property and border large planting areas. I like the leaves, too. When they bloom: DRAMA! People stop to admire. It takes several days to go through and deadhead after the show. And they need lots of water to stay green.

They’re not lilies of the genus Lilium, like the Asiatic and Oriental ones. They’re daylilies, genus Hemerocallis. The ditch lilies are also known as tawny daylilies. I have some in a poor-soil bed and appreciate that they’ll grow there, but I do have to keep reining them in.

It's reassuring when the garden expert is still planting bulbs/corms as late (or later) than I.
I potted some lilies earlier in spring and finally got them in the ground. The tiger lilies (orange?! In MY garden?) are getting ready to bloom. The white Oriental (Casa Blanca, I think) is still in the pot, but looks healthy.
I still had bulbs in the bags and finished planting them a week or so ago. I don't expect much this year (and especially after the roofers trampled on them), but I'm hoping they'll know what to do and give me a show next year.
Since I'm new to planting lily bulbs (I've grown nursery plants) I researched and read not to bury the green growth pushing out from the corm or they could rot. I hope I did the right thing by planting them so shallow. Sure made it easy planting in the ground. Less soil digging.
For those wondering, I have a tip to know which blooms first, Asiatic or Oriental. Think alphabetically. Asiatic bloom first then Oriental later in summer.
Laura, I, too, planted some glad corms that were questionable. There were 8 in the bag, but only 3 had signs of growth. The rest were sort of papery sacks. I just threw them in the pot all together and am hoping for the best. Probably should have added some Bio-tone to help them. Sometimes, figuring out where to plant things can be the cause for delay and failure. I wish I would have thought earlier to plant the glads in a pot a while ago.

I pray the storm lessons! I had golf ball hail with 8/10 of an inch of rain two weeks ago and a week and a half before 2 inches of large grape size hail accompanied by 2 3/4 inches of rain. I have a large garden, it was so very sad, but it just keeps on growing new leaves and new blooms. Prince tut, peonies, vista bubblegum, cats pajamas, delphies and salvia are the post hail stars. I live in Zone 5b Cheyenne, Wyoming! Be safe! I have absolutely loved your videos since the very beginning! Your townhome garden was a little secret garden that gave so may of us inspiration and you continue to do so! Thank you and Aaron for all you do!

Hi Laura. That tree lily is going to be massive! They are stunning for sure, easy to split. Ours have gotten over 6' without staking 😬 I might add. In your area you should stake.
We get those famous hailstorms here in Alberta, Canada every year, last year home owners claimed billions of $$ for insurance, because the cladding of their homes had to be re-done. I didn't plant a garden last year because of the previous year where I planted, 1 week later we had a hailstorm that took every last plant I had. Got a greenhouse this year! 😊 Goodluck!

I had no idea some lilies could be toxic to cats until two of our kittens chewed on my indoor potted lily. We rushed them to an emergency vet (they are ok). I have been creating flower gardens around our four acres but I’m glad I didn’t add any lilies outside yet. After our experience, I’ve decided no outdoor lilies for us!

l love that you are using bark to mulch the new garden area. Suggestion: Put your grass clippings down thinly first then top with the bark. The grass has a lot of nitrogen which can help as the bark decomposes. My husband died suddenly this spring and I don't have the heart to do much gardening/watering so right now I am mulching everything with grass clippings to help them limp along. It helps, just don't spread too thickly. Love the channel, thanks for sharing your garden with us.

With the Cana lilies, keep your eye open for fungal issues. I was gifted some (my summers are quite humid, and my winters dry), and when it's humid particularly, they get orange spots on the leaves.

Laura, I know you are so busy, but have to ask, do you ever take pictures of other people’s spaces and give advice on what to plant? I have a small space under a pine tree that I have made the back into a shade garden with hostas, ferns and inspiration from you, hellebores. Now I have the front of the bed to plant and have too many ideas but want to get it right the first time. I totally understand if you don’t have the time to do that kind of thing. Thank you, Laura and Aaron, for all the great inspirational videos!!

Hi Wendy. I'm glad I saw your post. I will be planting some canna reine charlotte rhizomes in planter 16x 13x 16D. 5 in each planter, I guess this would be ok? I bought organic potting soil and the bio tone fertilizer as Laura mentioned in another video. So I should plant only 2" deep. But how often should I water the rhizomes? Hopefully the afternoon sun it's not too much! The already planted cannas I bought from home depot did not survive once I planted them in my front yard...🥺

I have given up on Oriental lilies because they always gradually fade away in my garden, but I really love the vigorous orienpets that thrive without much work from me (I grow Elusive, Pretty Woman, Purple Prince, Big Brother, LeVern Friemann, Royal Sunset, Pink Snowflake). I've also been impressed with Asiatics like Red Velvet and Pink Flight. Very vigorous. I'm looking forward to seeing Eurydice, Iowa Rose, Forza Red and Purple Marble lilies blooming for the first time in my garden this year. They're such great focal flowers after the roses finish their first flush but before my dahlias really get going.

Random topic suggestion but I'd love a little video on your "strategies" or "favorite tools" that help you to garden with the littles around. You have lovely help most days, but are there things you've found that allow you to keep them near and occupy them enough that you can get work done? Sun tent, the little coup, kid shovels and a bucket of dirt, etc. I think these strategies are just as important as your weeding and watering strategies!
