They were quite effective at seizing German territories throughout the Pacific, perhaps most notably Tsingtao. Japan provided enormous amounts of assistance to the Royal Navy in anti-submarine and convoy escort work in the Eastern Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. They also sent large amounts of war material to Europe throughout the war, which helped bolster their economy and industrialization efforts as well. They also sent an expedition into Siberia to aid the White Russians against the Reds toward the end of the war, despite objections from and tensions with the US, who briefly sent a much smaller force on the same mission. The combination of the ease of Japan's victories during WW1, their accelerated industrialization, and post-War economic crises brought on in part by US efforts to throttle their economy were all major contributors to their joining the Axis in WW2.
