- This amp belongs to a customer that I've done several other amps for. He scours the region for vintage gems that don't quite work right. I wish I could do that, but I don't have the the time. The physical condition of this amp is great, but as often happens with vintage amps, the electronics have gone to rot. Let's fix it up.
I've got exactly the same amp, so this video is a real help. Thank you. The amp was given to me by my brother back in the late 80s. I'm in the process of restoring it. The lead dress on this amp you restored is extremely neat.
Cool, Glad it helped. In the film cap variety, Neither the red/pink Tiny Chief, nor the green caps are known for a long healthy life.... so I just did a mass change-out. amplifiedparts website will have all the parts that you'll need to accomplish the task.
It may seem like an abomination to some, but I am making changes, like using the 2nd half of V1 for a second stage, eliminating vibrato. I love vibrato, but I can get that from a pedal. I'm using a 220k for signal reducer / grid stopper and 470k for grid leak in both stages. Also including the Framus midrange mod. I do not intend to ever give this amp away or sell it, so could care less about keeping it original. I intend to use the Vox tone cut mod, but instead of 4700pf or whatever is used, I'd go to something like 150pf to basically tone down ice pick as needed. I changed up the first coupler to .01 and am using .68pf for cathode bypass, like Friedman's Dirty Shirley. If you have any suggestions about these changes, I'd very much like to hear them. You have the expertise. I'm also installing a WGS Invader 50 / 8 ohm.
Hey DK, nice amp.... Those oldies have that magical look and sound..Great repair and info..Ed..uk.😀
Thank you. This was an episode that everything just went according to plans.
I use to have the 65 version that was diode rectified a J12D. Lotta fun !
I generally like Ampeg stuff.... I feel that it never got enough love.
Amp is very clean sounding now and good for another 50 years ,I dont see anything wrong with using the MOD cap at all but you will always get negetive comments, but it dosnt mean they know how to fix a vintage amp ,Nice restoration !!!!1
I look at part selection as a function/form free of hype. I want caps that work, hold up, fit, and don't have a crazy price.
@@DeadKoby Like you were saying there wasnt a proper schematic for this amp to begin with and that seems to be the case in alot of vintage amps ,I tell you who has alot of schematics is Bruce Egnator that he got from people that worked for fender and other companies ,back before the Internet you had to write the amp Company and hope they send them to you ,IDK If Bruce will share them but sure is a nice guy
The schematic printed inside of the amp was close enough.... but if one checks Ampeg's site, there's 2 versions for a j-12, one older, and one newer... this one is forgotten. Comparing the components pulled from the amp, to what was written on the schematic printed inside... I went with what was ALREADY installed in the amp... as there were a few differences. I found a book at an auction that has a LOT of useful schematics in it. It was called "The Tube Amp Book" published by Groove Tubes. I don't agree with all their theory, but there's good stuff in there.
Good job mate! A nice easy, frustration & reproductive vernacular free repair/resto! Seeya next year! 😃👍
I appreciate you checking it out. Amps of this model in great working order command some pretty good prices. I put all the old parts in a bag, so if some gent THINKS it needs them, they have the option.
Nice work DK, was there a death cap in that Ampeg
possibly... I suppose it would help if I actually broke down and read the schematic.
I rely like the 1960's Ampeg 1x12's but working on them is like building a ship in a bottle, very limited space and horrible brown glue on everything.@@DeadKoby
This one wasn't TOO bad... but yeah... the glue pops a resistor out along with your old capacitor. These amps are pretty cool though. The Octal pre-amp is a neat touch.
Those old bad caps gotta go. Good job now it’s a working amp again instead oh a hummer only to be looked at.
I'm sure someone thinks the green ones were still good....or something like that. The red ones were certainly bad... and it's likely the others are close behind. It's just more logical to just give it a clean sweep and be set for years.
@@DeadKoby Agreed. Happy Holidays.
