    NOTES:
    The feeder is still working really well. I have updated it and will create another video for that to show how I am keeping the piglets out of the feed.

    I built one of these two years ago and it works well. Let the feeder go empty and they will clean up all the scattered feed. With that many pigs a full feeder will last about two to three days when they get to the 150 to 200 pound mark so it isn't much worry on wastage. This year I have gone back to twice a day hand feeding in troughs. The reason is that it trains the pigs to go to the trough when they see me and the feed bags. This is very important when they escape from their fences which they will do several times. Also it makes it easier to load for processing since they will follow you into the trailer instead of having to be herded and driven up a chute. Take it from my experience a 300 pound market hog goes where it wants to not where you want it to.

    we have a pig feeder that is really similar. I lay concrete blocks flat on the bottom skid. that eliminates some of the feed area and holds the feed in place until the pigs get larger. I then remove the blocks one at a time until they are all removed. hope this helps

    Cover 3 of the four holes from the inside so it's not coming out so fast. Use a paper plate or scrap of tin. As they get bigger and are eating more you can remove more covers when you refill.

    This seems to reasonably work while they are little (and of course providing it does not rain thus spoiling the feed) however as they get bigger you are going to have them tip that entire skid over.

    I feed my pigs slop. Free slop from the local school cafeteria. When they are out in the field I supplement their food with the slop twice a day. Free and good for them and they get pasture fed too. Just a thought. Jim

    Sorry my friend but I learned long long LONG time ago do try to reinvent the wheel/ pig Flip feeder lol we paddock our pigs also and flip feeders made out of old wood highway sings is what we have had for last few years." Have a friend that works for road construction and had wood going to toss and burn" works wonderfully. As they get bigger they are Very destructive!! And if take a mind to they can push that over/ across into your fencing. Like I say BEEN THERE DONE THAT ;( long Flip feeder on skid to pull to next paddock works like brezz.Love your video's fan from Michigan :)

    Cthis looks like a good plan! What do you do for shade in summer, put on edge of woods? We raise Berkshires on pasture/ woods and run a bull with them for protection. They come back to the barn for grain. Even with the doraging, pigs still need grain. I think your design is clever and agree with you when they are bigger they will waste a lot less !

    Why can't you pasture pigs and a small flock of chickens together? The chickens would eat up all the wasted feed that the pigs push out. I love your videos dude. I have been watching them every day now to learn more about raising chickens better. I used to farm pigs and some chickens in Florida and did very well. I am here in East Tennessee now and all I can raise in my area is chickens. Good work and keep the videos coming.

      Hello, I’m new also and I have found that there are many videos on starting. As a new person to pigs first thing I would look at is the type of fence you have or want and if your going to move them or pen!

      Not a lot of it. It mixes with their poo and they're not as into it.

    I was wondering why you did not get heritage foraging pigs. You have a lot of grass and they would turn it up for you.

    • @pewing99
      @pewing99 9 років тому

      xxxlambertixxx In all but the best multispecies pastures you will still need to supplement growing pigs with grains or some other feed source, especially the protein source. Plus most of the foraging pigs take over a year to get to market weight which really puts a crimp in schedules and profits.

      My Red wattle pig take 7-8 months to get to processing weight, not a year. With pasture rotation and supplement non GMO feed, extra hard boiled eggs. Great grazers and dont root much.

    what kind of feed do you use?

    • @farmmarketing
      @farmmarketing  9 років тому +1

      beth mitchell I use a feed mix from my local mill. As a small scale producer you kind of have to take what you're given a lot of the time. I also don't have enough expertise to custom mix my own or make special requets. What you can get for feed will be tied to where you live and the resources available.

    Terrible waste of food. It may also attract rats. I would rec'd one that closes & they open it themselves, you could put it on skids...
