    My Taiwaniana survived a very cold winter quite well but got killed the following winter by the combination of continuous rains and light frosts. Most tender plants can handle some cold but the combination of frosts and wet conditions is lethal.

    I’m sure you meant “ the Beast from the East in 2018” as opposed to 1918.
    Last winter we experienced 4f here an hour north of Seattle WA, USA. My S. taiwaniana was completely defoliated and killed back to about 6ft from 15ft. Most of my S. delavayi had only minor damage. S. fengii was killed outright, as were some other Vietnamese collected species.
