  • In 2003 Sony produced an external optical drive that burned CDs through USB from a PC. But the company wasn't willing to give up on its Walkman/Discman heritage just yet.

I'd say not counting their gaming division it was more like 95, as they kept on trying to introduce so many media formats formats no one but themselves used, draining their resources developing, manufacturing, and marketing, and it's part of what's left then in the red to this day with the latest being Vita memory cards(total overpriced BS to get round paying the already cheap SD card format license) Sony only has 2 formats that have been adopted industry wide(well 2 that I know of anyways) that being the Red book CD audio, and Blu-Ray/4K Ultra Bu-Ray(I'm counting it as one format since it's barely different, expect the encoder chip in newer UBD players to output 4K).

@@CommodoreFan64 Oh god, don't even get me started about the Vita Memory cards… they should have stuck with their Memory Stick Pro Duo HG series and nit introduce yet another format for just ONE single damn device. The UMD was the same dumb decision when they could have instead just used HiMD and MiniDisc techology as a whole and just increase the capacity for PSP purposes. It would have also made the PSP compatible with ALL MiniDiscs and would have made it a perfect multimedia device. Even if it could have only read MDs and not recording onto them. Which would have probably boosted sales of portable MD recorders. But Sony was too shortsighted in this regard…

    • @CommodoreFan64

@@KRAFTWERK2K6 They should have not even bothered with Memory Stick Pro in my book, and just gone for the CF, or SD standards like the rest of the industry, far as Mini Disk instead of UMD it would have been too thick, so they could have just gone with a mini DVD like the GameCube for the PSP just housed in a case like the UMD.
I guess I'm just a fan of common standards.

10 years ago I would have loved to run around with something like that. I had a Fujitsu netbook with no internal drives at all, and to be able to go somewhere, and rip a couple disks, then burn them as mp3s to a disk, or watch a movie would be at the time the ultimate road warrior/geek device. Now we just have thumb drives, and that tech is kind of redundant.
Still its interesting to see these things I have never heard of, so thankyou for sharing.
Also I am still trying tonput together my trip to the cities. I have to see Think Geek for myself.

I still have mine from 2003 along with the cradle and the remote. Heck, I still have the box. A couple things to note that made it even more special for its time:
First, even Discman players at the time didn't support MP3. Sony was still pushing ATRAC3. That made this the only Sony DAP that could really compare to something like the iPod.
Speaking of iPods, the typical capacity back then was 5GB and the largest was 10GB. That was non-expandable HDD storage for hundreds of dollars where this device could add another 4.7GB whenever you want for 10-cents (cost of a DVD-R disc)! Of course, you could add another 9.5GB for the still-negligible cost of a DVD+R DL disc.
Next, pretty much no MP3-compatible disc players from that time could play MP3 DVDs. They were almost exclusively MP3 CD players. Since this could play MP3 from DVD it stood out even more.
I wouldn't be so quick to gloss over the Memory Stick slot. Back then the big consideration for DAP buyers was whether or not it was "solid-state," unlike a disc or disk (HDD). Having a MS slot gave it the best of all three worlds and battery life was obviously even higher when it didn't have to spin the disc around.
All this gave it the capacity of HDD "jukebox" players with the cheap expandability of the MP3 CD players, one-upped with DVD, and even a solid-state player thrown in to boot. Pretty amazing, and that's before you consider it's functions as a PC drive and burner.
It's actually part of a "Digital Relay Series" of external CD burners though it's the only one that really looks like a Discman. The styling perfectly matches my Sony KV-30XBR910 which I also picked up in 2003.

I really only use my PSP as a DAP and use ATRAC (OGG Vorbis which only works with homebrew players) for when it has to be a lot of audio but mostly prefer lossless WAV on it. Haven't found a good FLAC software player for it yet.

@@KRAFTWERK2K6 You've got me wondering if my MPD-AP20U would play uncompressed WAV files from DVD. I wonder how many you could even fit on a DVD+R DL.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 4 роки тому +1

@@emmettturner9452 it really depends on the resolution and bitdepth. And how well the DAC of the player handles it. The PSP sadly only managed to handle up to 48khz 16bit. Most DVD players back then probably had similar DACs. Unless they were in the higher budget regions. 48Khz 16Bit should always work. Back then i did a lot of Audio DVDs myself which were simple Video DVDs with a lossless PCM soundtrack instead of Dolby Stereo. I just added a stillframe and let the audio have the majority of the bandwidth. That always worked on every DVD player and could be played back easily. It was the poor man's version of DVD Audio :P

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 4 роки тому

@@KRAFTWERK2K6 LOL! But, yeah, I'm just talking about abusing the capacity of DVD to add some semblance of lossless audio formats to this old player, so just WAVs off a CD on a DVD+R DL disc. Sounds like it could hold about 20 albums as WAV on a DVD+R DL, though I still don't know if it could play them without digging mine out to try. That said, there's a better chance than a DVD player, since this is a CD player. ;)

the remote control headphone adapter of a discman may work with this, the switchgear for minidiscs has been mapped, and sony used to switch pins around from memory there are 6 main types.
each one uses different pin assignments 4 of the types were used on the MD walkmans, 1 on discmans, and another for those high end digital voice recorder/mp3 player things sony used to sell.

I had one of those, though I think I only bought it secondhand. I mostly got it to use as a dvd drive for my Company TC1000 tablet pc which didn’t have an internal optical drive (you could add one to its docking station, but it was far too bulky to be portable).
I think I still have it somewhere, including the remote and the cradle, but I haven’t tried using it for years.
Bits of it gradually stopped working though, the eject mechanism failed so you always had to use the little slider on the bottom to get the lid open, I think the USB port on the side also failed so you could then only use it with the cradle. I did carry it around with me quite a lot when I first had it and used it for audio on the bus, which was probably a bit of a mistake as it’s quite a fragile unit.

A Blu-ray Burner combo that also has a HDMI output so it can be hooked up to any TV but also has a USB 3.0 port to it can be used as a optical drive for Desktop computers and Laptops. The price was actually a steal for what it was back then, reason why I bought one back then. It was way better then having to carry a separate backpack CD recorder with me, plus gave me many hours of enjoyment during train rides. You have to remember even portable CD recorder were expensive at the time plus most were bulky. If you wanted a portable DVD player was several hundreds of dollars like the 2002 Panasonic LA95 was $1200 just a year before. So was actually quite cheap for what it was granted no monitor, or DVD video out, but did work with a laptop as a DVD ROM drive.

Got mine brand new back in the day. You can play MP3s from DVD-R or memory stick. There's a dock for using it with a PC. The dock can also hold more batteries.

Yours is also mine. :) Just typed all this up:
I still have mine from 2003 along with the cradle and the remote. Heck, I still have the box. A couple things to note that made it even more special for its time:
First, even Discman players at the time didn't support MP3. Sony was pushing ATRAC3 back then. Made this the only Sony DAP that really gave the iPod a run for its money.
Speaking of iPods, the typical capacity back then was 5GB. That was 5GB of non-expandable storage for hundreds of dollars where this device could add another 4.7GB whenever you want for 10-cents!
Next, pretty much no MP3-compatible disc players from that time could play MP3 DVDs. They were almost exclusively MP3 CD players.
I wouldn't be so quick to gloss over the Memory Stick slot. Back then the big consideration for DAP buyers was "solid-state, or not?" Having a MS slot gave it the best of both worlds. Battery life was obviously even higher when it didn't have to spin the disc around.
All this gave it the capacity of HDD "jukebox" players with the cheap expandability of the MP3 CD players (one-upped with DVD!) and even a solid-state player thrown in to boot. Pretty amazing.
It's actually part of a "Digital Relay Series" of external CD burners though it's the only one that really looks like a Discman. The styling perfectly matches my Sony KV-30XBR910 which I also picked up in 2003.

In 2022, what does Sony really need to make? Most devices they had made got replaced by a phone or laptop. CD/DVD players of all sorts, Minidisc, DAT tapes, Betacam, Betamax, cordless phones, camcorders, VCRs, Cassette players, mp3 players, radios, Magnetic Media, speakers, cheapo point and shoot cameras.... For the most part, headphones are still needed, but most of the techy stuff really isn't needed anymore.

It would have been more interesting if it would also have been able to record from external audio onto the CD without needing a computer to feed the data... digitizing it on the fly.

This concept - tried and failed *so many times*. Media Vision Reno, Panasonic and Sony had them.. it never worked well. It was a bulky, underpowered, compromised CD player, and a mediocre (at best) optical drive.
