I use exactly the same bead roller and have no real issues with it. It's pretty simple to make your own custom dies and far cheaper than buying in. Mine has been converted to electric power with a motor, gearbox and control gear from an old stair lift. Paid peanuts for an unwanted old stairlift on the understanding I removed it and made the walls good. Scrapped the rest and got money back! Motor super high torque and very slow speed if needed. Works on a foot switch from a spare tig welder!
We had a motorized beader at my fab shop. We use (mostly) 0.32 sheet aluminum for weather proofing pipe insulation in refineries. Anyway, we had a guy who was new to the whole powered beader with foot pedal. His glove got caught in the beader, ran his thumb through and required 18 stitches. Many factors led to it but the cover on the foot pedal was one big issue. His boot got stuck in there.
Greetings from Florida. I appreciate your instruction on the bead roller as I've got one of those "Basic" Chinese models also. I don't need an expensive professional model just to make a few panels for my 67 Ford Mustang, so a bead roller of this type fits the bill for me. I slip it into my vise when I need it then I remove it and put it aside. I'm not blessed with a large sized working area so working space is at a premium. Thanks for your videos, you've gained a new subscriber.
Matt, you are always building little projects so stand back and look at that roller, now think of the old singer sewing machines operated by a treadle, with your skill and know how you can operate that bead roller by foot while holding your work with both hands and looking directly onto your work. The larger wheel needed can be obtained from a washing machine or tumble dryer....Great vid by the way, keep them coming.
Hi Matt, I just purchased a identical machine. That would have to be one of the best how to videos showing how to use it. All I hope is I can get results half as good as yours. G'day from Australia. Cheers.
Hi Matt, great video content, if you were working the Bead Roller on a panel of specific size (dimensions), is there much shrinkage of the panel? Or do you need to perform the Bead Rolling process first on the material to be used and then cut the panel to size? Having no experience of Bead Rolling myself, I am assuming that the Bead Roller is stretching and compressing the metal as it is fed through the Rollers.
Howdie its 2024 ya still using it or got better one l like the one ya got ya dont owe the bank for it and it seems like does the job so keep going is my saying be proud of what ya do ya got this l,m 67 yrs old still learning how to make and build things 3 heart attacks later still working on motors and building projects if ya willing to learn new things all good carry on from Canada 🍁 SK later 😊
Hi Matt, You are right it does look way more professional and makes the finished panel look like it was factory made. I am now looking for one of these for the next part of my build which is how I found your video. Did you ever replace it with a motorised model? Kind regards Paul from 48SPOKES
Actually I’m currently working on modifying a bead roller like that with a windshield washer motor and reinforcements on the back and a table to help increase performance
I just got one of these. May put a wheel on it. I'm thinking that may make it easier to turn? What guage metal was that? And was it steel? Thanks man. Good vid.
Michael Jackson - beaded.... haha thanks for the review, I am giving this a shot.. 👍 I am using diy 3 parts positioning wooden templates + dies made diy of 8mm sheet + a 12 ton shop press for all my autobody sheet metal pressing (for reinforcement) and it is hell of an overhead in my project.. not to mention it stretches the plate which I need to shrink which is almost blackmagic to apply.. So I will try this! cheers!
Brill vid, just bought same roller and looking for some guidance on methodology, suspect my son will be the motor for mine leaving me free to manage the business end. :)
Be aware that steel has internal stresses due to the way it is made. When sheet-steel goes through the temper-mill, the crystalline structure gets elongated, affecting its properties along and against the direction it was rolled. Forging does the same thing. From a macro-view, the material looks uniform. Etch it with acid, put it under a microscope and you can see it has some similarities to the way wood has fibers. There is a technical word for this. I can't remember it though.
@@katemoon7476 thank you, but I do know that. But I see people doing it the same way I seem to, and theirs doesn’t curve. I know that this is stretching and shrinking the metal, and that’s why this is happening. But I guess it’s just experience.
@@melgross I've seen it done on the videos where they make motorcycle fenders. They do it to relieve the work-hardening and allow it to bend some more without the metal splitting. It isn't too common for it to be done in a shop. Another application is for when someone is building a CNC machine and you don't want any warpage. Definitely not common.

I looked at those cheap rollers on ebay and wondered if they would work ok thanks for the video if you've been using it for 3 years should be good for the price wish you had shown some other beads though
Your skill level made that look ezier than it is I reckon, (I've got one but I'm crap with it) but neat work mate -I can't blame the friggin tool now though ! :) - mine sez its rated for 1.2mm mild, but I reckon thats pushing it , but 1.2 wouldn't really need a bead to stiffen it up??, anyway, Liked n subbed.

brilliant stuff Matt, looks so professional, added strength indeed.
Very informative thank you, I have an exact same shape required and was puzzled how to do it, never knew a bead roller could do that so brilliant!
You are a great teacher. Thank you. I have bought a bead roller but have not had a chance to use it yet.
No problem, Cheers
man, how long have I been looking for the correct term for this process.

Great to watch a real craftman aoolying his trade. Great work.

Nice how to. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your vids.
Thanks

After watching this video, I feel like a professional metalworker. I know it all now.
Some nice skills going on. A nice explanation on how to use the tool in conjuction with welding to preventing warping.
Cheers
Great result. What gauge steel were you working with?
Thanks a lot,from Salta Argentina.Congratulations
Brill, Keep these vids coming. Very very well presented and simple. Would love to see on the Mk 2 escort you mentioned in another video. Thanks.

Yeh wheel is a really good idea actually. That was 1mm steel, ive done 1.5 mm with no issues just a bit of flex at the end.

i want to bend the edge of square round steel tank. the corner round shape is 35 mm reduce so how to make it?
I own a similar one. I love it, but a power feed upgrade sure would be nice.
Can these also bend the end of a panel to 90degrees? Ie for butting up to other panels?
Great vid Matt, what gauge steel were you working with?
love it..jsut bought one of these...going to put a pipe threader on it with a pedal controller
Great video matt, I guess practise makes perfect for me, I bet you have used it a few times.
Yeh I've had a fair bit of practice on it. Cheers
have you tried hooking up a sewing machine motor to it with gearing¿¿

Could you do some videos of roll cage tips please?

What's the heaviest gauge mild steel this would handle?

will these put a 90 lip on a curved panel please

what's the benefit/purpose of beading?

Can't you motorize that one with a foot controlled rheostat and a gear reduction box?
Yeh ive been looking at a few people that have done that, might make a fun project.
That looks identical to the Eastwood bead roller I have. Eastwood sells a motor and controller that bolt right on.

Great job, thanks for posting

How do you put a bead into a rolled or curved piece?
Roll first then bead?
yeh shape it first.

FWD to 6:15. You're welcome.
Rig up a power window motor to it. Or a flip up headlight motor.
