Dick’s moved from the mall recently, moved over to the Target plaza along with BAM! The Black Rose in the mall is only a furniture division of the company. The main store moved out several years ago and went next door. They are on the hill outside the Rural King you can see it from the Rural King parking lot.
I believe the former JCPenney here might have been the sister store to the one at Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage, PA; which was ALSO TOO a Crown America Mall, which I believe also opened around the same time as well. (circa 1967-'69/'70)
I was born and raised in Hanover, PA. I vaguely remember it when it was a strip mall, but I spent many hours of my chiildhood at Scotto's/Jerry and Sal's and the arcade. I purchased several of my 'highest tech' electronics from Sears....back in the day. I remember eating at Bay City when it was located in the mall.
Burlington used to be JCPenney (before they moved to the fire location) and at the end of the corridor where GNC is was the mall entrance to Sears. The stand where the paintings on the wall was Auntie Anne's at one point. This mall used to be packed with people back in the 80's-90's. Sad to see it empty. Hopefully they rebuild the JCPenney anchor and finally bring in Boscov's to pump life back into he mall. Keep up the great work Wallie and safe travels always. Thank you for always documenting everything in a respectful and professional manner.
And to think, the fire that just broke out at Century 3 and the fire that broke out here happened a year apart. So sad hearing of things like that happening to malls that were the places to be at one point in time.
8:27 - That brick tiling on the floor in that entry looks just like the flooring in the (what I like to call the) "Backrooms" part of Shenango Valley Mall.
Did you know there's a HOME DEPOT store in Hanover which is an old SUPER KMART CENTER store, which still has the original 90's Super Kmart facade, painted orange to match the classic Home Depot color scheme?
Thank you…….it’s so sad to see these malls in such a state….I worked in a mall for 16 years so they hold a special place in my heart! If you come to Canada there’s one in Thunder Bay called Victoriaville, slated for demolition next year…..I have a vid I took of it last winter-super retro!!!
Yes black rose did leave the mall they have another location here in Hanover that has more than just the furniture store in the mall. It’s interesting that auto zone is part of the mall parking lot
Only a few stores remain from even 10 years ago. In recent years, BAM!, Claire's, Bath & Body Works, Dicks, and several other stores have moved out of the mall to more profitable locations in town while stores such as JC Penney, Sears, Hallmark, Payless, FYE, and several others have closed their Hanover branches entirely. At the turn of the century, the anchor stores were Sears (where Rural King is today), Bon Ton (where the construction is currently going on), JC Penney (where Burlington is today), and Black Rose Antiques (where Dicks just moved out of). By 2010, Bon Ton and Black Rose had both moved to outside locations and were meant to be replaced by Dicks and Boscov's, but as you mentioned Boscov's bankruptcy prevented that from occurring. The mall has been on a steady decline since then, including the loss of several restaurants and many smaller stores and even the cessation of local traditions like a Halloween celebration and a fairly large Christmas display featuring the classic mall Santa. I think the biggest blow to the mall was allowing the Rural King to quite literally wall themselves off from the rest of the mall, making the store inaccessible from the inside of the mall and only through the exterior doors. This has taken away the last real breath of life from the mall and even though the Rural King has a fairly large number of customers daily, almost none of them actually enter the mall itself, solely due to the decision to wall the store off from the rest of the mall. I remember as a child how busy and vibrant the mall used to be, even in the early 2000s, and it is truly sad to see what has become of it.
I went here a couple years ago with my grandma and only just a couple years ago. It was almost packed it was around Christmas. There were many stores I vividly remember that there was a dealership or it might’ve been just an ad for some vehicle
You really sing and play well in this video. Your music is very mellow and your voice is very smooth. Can you try “Rocket Man” by Elton John? It would suit your voice and style.
@WallieB26, I just moved from York to Hanover, this mall is basically my backyard I’m so close to it. York & Hanover are in the same county, you know that you been to both. But damn seen a yellow Pontiac after we left Rural King and told my wife and kids jokingly, that was you. Now joke might have backfired, because it was probably you. It was in March too because my wife & kids were taking me to get the boots I wanted for my birthday. Seriously joke backfired hard because odds are it was actually you. Wow
Good thing we have the Retro Decade Revival Project to turn the tables around. You can help by creating fundraising campaigns to save the mall and restore it to its former glory, including the original shops from opening day.
One thing that sticks out to me here is that many of the store signs were never updated even as the logos for those companies changed more than 20 years ago. The Claire's logo hasn't looked like that on storefronts in over 20 years; same with the Spencer's store, and that one is even still open. I don't know when the Payless in this mall closed, but I know all of the stores closed in 2019, and yet those signs are straight out of 1998.
Seeing all of these once-epic malls shutter is truly the end of an era when people went to malls without their screaming, out-of-control ADD kids and/or their often blaring cell phones. Believe it or not there was actually a time when malls were an adult-centered environment.
I know at one point that stand at the end was a soft pretzel place, but I'm not sure if it was anything else after that. The Black Rose used to be an anchor store in the location that then became the Dick's. Before that it was a K-Mart. I honestly didn't even realize Black Rose still had a location in that mall.
@16:22 Shoutout to Fishbone Apparel! We have been in that mall for decades, since skateboarding's heyday... We are just a local PA-based skateshop, and it's wild to see the mall crumble around us. We used to have a RADIOSHACK next to us, turned into a vape shop... Oooof. I've worked at Fishbone for almost 13 years, and worked the mall (when the bookstore was Waldenbooks) since 2007. Wild ride seeing it crash.
. 7:21 this entrance is used as an Emergency Exit for Rural King. When it was a Sears this was the mens department entrance. 14:20 Black Rose Antiques had originally moved out of the mall. Where the old Sears Auto Center is Black Rose moved up on the hill behind it in a small strip center. The one in North Hanove Mall is for the larger furniture. Dick's closed early March 2023 (2weeks before the vlog came out)& moved to their brand new location less than a mile away on Wilson Ave. 19:06 The little place with the dogpainted was an old Auntie Ann's Pretzel place, then turned into a smoothie place that lasted less than 6 months & has been vacant since 2017.
Was that an Auntie Anne's? I know at one point they had a storefront down close to where the Burlington is now, but I thought it was a different soft pretzel place that went in toward the Sears/Rural King end after the Auntie Anne's moved out? Maybe I'm just losing it.
I was born in 1967 we have a shopping 🛍️ mall here in Springfield Missouri called the battlefield mall it is built on the grounds where the civil war took place so it was built on a battlefield a lot of young men died there. When I was little the place turned into a battlefield during Christmas you had to fight for parking 🅿️ then you had to fight the crowds. You would need a full armor and sword 🗡️ to shop. Our mall still does ok 👌 because we have a strong middle class. We have a couple of major hospitals 🏥 and several universities here.
Dick's have been going through bankruptcy problems and they had to close some of their stores but sad part almost every stores have money problems due to crappy money management and it's sad that mall is going to heck I bet the electric wiring are about shot as well..
This mall is barely hanging on by a thread.... Spencer's gone, Dick's gone, Auntie's annes, FYE gone...all it has is burlington. It needs to shut down tbh
Jerry and sals is still in there and that’s one of the best pizza places in town I hate rural king isn’t using its mall entrance just the outside entrance.
WallieB the man... Love ya brotha

This mall was very cool, I'm sad that it was destroyed by a fire.
Wow That's Dead Mail Keep Up Making Good Video.
I was in there today. It has gone WAY downhill since you made this video! It is very creepy!
Awesome video!!! Epic editing and narration!!
Thank you very much!
This is was my favorite mall almost 10 years ago when I was lived in Hanover.
5:30 Good ole Ed Weinstock!
I believe the former JCPenney here might have been the sister store to the one at Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage, PA; which was ALSO TOO a Crown America Mall, which I believe also opened around the same time as well. (circa 1967-'69/'70)
I was born and raised in Hanny. This place used to the THE SPOT.
I was in Statesville last week didn't know there was a mall there so cool can't wait till the video of that mall thanks for sharing
The actual black rose is across the parking lot from rural king in the other shopping center
Nice clean looking mall.
Awesome video mall
Damnit big man just slinging out the videos lately. Awesome!!! Keep it up dude 🤙
It’s still open, surprisingly. I am praying that the mall gets fixed up

I love this new mall video keep it up walleb26
This saddens me but at least there trying to save this mall, That poor GNC store in the dark corner their wow. Thanks for sharing and have a good week
Can you please make a video of the Rural King in Hanover Pennsylvania?
The mall in Hot Springs, Arkansas would be a good one to visit and do a video of.
I visit there a month ago. From El dorado

Your passion and research for these spaces is appreciated; shout out for mentioning wt grant; we had one in my town - a down market k mart! Be safe!

Very nice Wall-E
I am going back to that Spencer's gifts in a few weeks.

Spencer's stores have been losing money right and left and some of their stuff are cheaply made and you pay with several toes and fingers for..
Claire's moved out of the mall & into a shopping center with a little larger of a store. It is Also doing rather well in the new location.
puppy stand was a pretzel plus, before 2007 at least
Is there way to turn up that ‘snarling black marble’ sounds like lava magma. Hell

In the 80s this was the hub for hanover. Such a shame we lost all these businesses.

@@darthpi1337 It was a Pretzel's Plus, the Auntie Anne's was next to the Spencer's
Hey, my local mall!!! Rural king is literally the greatest store!!! Haha I love it.
Its a shame its like this as i did live here for five years
I miss your state park videos
They'll be coming back soon since the weather is getting nicer.

It looks like eastland mall before it closed see you in the next video
Cool Mall az🥰
Nice!
As a resident of the backwater town that is Hanover PA, I'd give up a kidney if it meant this waste of man-made construction was demolished
Eat shit, Hanover is lovely
It would be great if this mall was replaced with an indoor skatepark, some restaurants, and a few retail stores.
The york Galleria mall is about the same as this one
I like when you talk. Please narrate more.
I want to buy the LED Disco lamp in Spencer Gifts.
I got my ears pierced in this mall 😢
Dick's have been going through bankruptcy problems and they had to close some of their stores but sad part almost every stores have money problems due to crappy money management and it's sad that mall is going to heck I bet the electric wiring are about shot as well..
That particular Dick's had a new building built (opened in early March of 23) less than 1 mile away in a new shopping center.
This mall is barely hanging on by a thread.... Spencer's gone, Dick's gone, Auntie's annes, FYE gone...all it has is burlington. It needs to shut down tbh
“Namdar is working on getting Uniontown Mall better”
That mall is even more dead now.
Can you do a dead mall video at Uniontown pa
Add a D at the end of han and then it would be called Hand over mall
Jamzzzz 😂😂😂
Cute
it dead mall before covid . only thing mall live is rural king .
Jerry and sals is still in there and that’s one of the best pizza places in town I hate rural king isn’t using its mall entrance just the outside entrance.
Dicks only closed because they relocated in another part of Hanover
I have watched Hanover go downhill over the past 35/40 years it's a shame
