Bio: Wajahat S. Khan is an Emmy-nominated journalist and author reporting on Indo-Pacific security and focusing on the Af-Pak conflict. An Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Center of Global Affairs and non-resident Senior Fellow at Washington’s Atlantic Council, Khan is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism and the University of Michigan, as well as Pakistan’s only Shorenstein Fellow for Harvard University’s John F. How private sector can help when Army is the direct competitor in most of the businesses? This question is for the new finance minister.
I don't think that Army has deliberately subdued any sort of private business? Can you give an example of what you're insinuating?
Except for the Fauji Foundation conglomerate, every other private conglomerate or company is leading in private businesses in Pakistan like Nishat Group, Bahria Town, HBL, MCB Bank, Allied Bank, Engro Corporation and many others. I do agree with you in some way but the entire reason behind Fauji Foundation is the countless families of martyrs (since 1947) and widows as the majority of funds are spent on their welfare.

When he referred to the present set-up as “elected government”, my first impression about Mr. Aurangzeb was dampened. Alas!
He's not a politician, don't expect him to comment on our rotten system. Let's hope he delivers but under present circumstances, I doubt anyone will be able to. Main problem remains which is army interfering in every institution of the country.

Wajahat bhai, there is a hell of a difference between a business man and an economist. His education shows he could be a good business man and he worked in many Banks as well. What was his assignments in those Banks and positions? I will give him a best of luck for Islamabad but i have a doubt as well.

Let's not conflate a parasitic banker, signed up to serve the dictatorial Company Bahadur, and whose forte is ripping off Pakistanis for Agha Khan Foundation owned HBL, with someone genuinely elected and commited to serving the people of Pakistan, not the bloody occupying army. As far as economics is concerned, as an economics graduate, can vouch for its uselessness.

Well Wajahat, here's the issue: the new minister begins his speech by declaring the need for honest leadership to tackle Pakistan's financial woes. Yet, he proceeds to praise the caretaker government, claiming they've done an outstanding job despite widespread allegations of their corruption. He then lauds the establishment's creation of a new investment department as the finest achievement, suggesting it will meet its goals. However, he's aware that his position is secure only as long as he has the backing of certain generals, despite their corrupt practices. The moment these generals demand results he cannot deliver, his tenure will end, and he will simply become a part of history.

Remember Shaukat Aziz was a shinning star as long as he was with Citigroup? Running a bank as chief is totally different than running the finance of a country where he will NEVER get a free hand - thus you can write him off even b4 he starts.
Government job is to run administrative and security services. Government is to collect revenue from private sectors.
Private sectors are to run businesses.

Pragmatism means compromising and impairing law, right team, meritocracy, integrity and interests of the country. He has a bagful of contrasting ideas or clichés. He can't be but his masters' voice. Just suppose he is sincere to his declared assertions. In that case, let's see, how soon he comes into clash with his masters.
Hope Aurie imparts some semblance of stability to the economy. Will he be able to introduce much-needed reforms like broadening tax net, modernising agriculture, fiscal deniability
Pakistan needs reforms like landreforms, smaller provinces and privatization of loss making public enterprises.
Finance Minister should be an Economist. Banker can't do any good for country on longer run.
When you appoint a banker as finance minister then you are aiming to get a lot of big loans 🏧
