  • I've run the Vortex, AiM, and GET ECUs and I've come to some conclusions as to which gives your Honda CRF450L/RL more power, better traction control, and smoother throttle response. Team Yellow, Green, or Pink? No more twitchy throttle!
    How to 0 your TPS:
    Stock/Vortex
Port is upper right, second from the top, between a green/orange above and a solid green below.
Insert a wire between port and ground.
Turn the bike on. The fuel pump should NOT start if everything is correct.
THrottle closed, turn the bike over for three seconds.
Throttle wideopen, turn the bike over for three seconds.
    Done
    AIM
Bike off, kill switch in kill position.
Insert a wire into the port.
    Turn the bike to ON.
While grounding the wire out switch the kill switch to RUN. The motor light should start blinking.
With the throttle CLOSED, momentarily ground the wire again. The engine light should go solid - then start blinking.
With the throttle held wide OPEN, momentarily ground the wire again. The engine light should go solid - then start blinking.

The Vortex ECU has an overwhelming amount of success stories across multiple platforms. The AIM/GET ECU didn't get noticed for "new technology" advancements as some have mentioned in the FB groups, but due to the supply chain crisis Vortex went through regarding chips Toyota, Honda, and GM horded for their vehicles. At the end of the day we all know Vortex are durable and have the history to prove it. Vortex eliminates bog, decreases flame outs, and smooths out off idle throttle delivery. I wouldn't get the map switch for the Honda. Normally, once you pick a map on the Vortex that suits your needs you're less likely to switch. I think the GET/AIM ECU are great alternatives when you can't locate a Vortex, but aren't my first choices. I love the laid back video!

Had the same issue with the GET ECU on my Husky FE350s. Ordered it from TacoMoto. Idle was all over the place and the bike would eventually stall. Talked to Mike from TacoMoto and he was amazing. Talked to me throughout the troubleshooting and eventually helped me switch to a Vortex ECU. Night and day difference between GET and Vortex. Shoutout to TacoMoto and Mike. Very impressive customer support!

Thanks for the time you took to put this comparison together. Now I'm even more satisfied that I got the AIM [from Tokyo Mods (they are just a mile from my house) for less than retail]. I thought my idle was a little high after installing it last week but the manual does say idle should be at 1800 so that seems right. I like the 1 and done install with no switches. There are already enough tech things to fuss with in life these days so the GET loses it's charm in that regard. I just want to ride! (faster now, thank you)

Just sold my old XR650L. I have a 2019 CRF450L I picked up with 700 mi. I rode it and it was real twitchy from 0-on throttle, and would die when chopping the throttle. I adjusted the idle up 3 clicks, added a bit more free play in the throttle cable. Made a big improvement. Doesn't die anymore. But still has a bit of surge. I'm getting the aim.

Good video John much of my same thoughts Tons of torque with AiM and good linear power from the GET, Although on my 450RL when using the GET it doesn't idle that weak or stalls like that Mike flashed it in August of this year and I'm only running a full exhaust as a mod I still have the emissions on it stock air box and cover on if that makes a difference With the AiM the biggest drawback was the 50 MPH surge I switched to map 3 jacked the high fueling up to 5 and the mid to 4 Smoothed it out a bit Take care sir

Am sure it made a big improvement in ridability as compared to stock. Also, I was thinking on the lines of Taco as it almost appears sometimes the flameout “could” be an electrical glitch. Would be a heck of a thing if we were on a wild goose chase and actually had a bad connection at the kick stand, etc. At least this is addressed in the doc. The bike is definitely worth fixing.

Wow, that’s rough.. Was gonna pull the trigger on the full GET setup today. There is another vid out (sure you’ve seen it). It runs rougher for that user as well, but the traction control is impressive as he gets moving up hills that are pretty challenging. My number one priority is fixing the scary flameout at the worst time. If that can’t be fixed, then I won’t trust the bike. I’m an older fart (speaking for myself) and spend a lot of time just putting over obstacles and keeping the slow speed abilities up. Fun right? There is the older more standard flame-out that was notorious in big thumpers in the carb days when it sort of was sucking air and just not enough fuel at just the instant you roll on the gas, and they would sort of fire backwards back through the carb and kill the motor. We got used to that, whatever remained from tinkering with jetting, shape of the slide, washers under the needle, going to pumper carbs, whatever. We dealt with it. This ‘19 450L seems to suffer from something a bit different, but more costly because theres no warning. Sometimes in a very slow turn, it’s just like the kill switch was activated and it just dies! No bloop, nothing, just turns off. Then its rescue mode to keep from dropping her. Seems “different” from the older flameout of the earlier big thumps. Could deal with that, I can’t with this. It’s not fun anymore. So, I WAS focused in the GET. But after your vid and seeing how the motor blips off idle so clean with the AIM, I’m almost willing to give up a bit of top end (highway cruise). Question is, how does the AIM run on the highway? That might be my next research item.. The GET with wifi and trouble code reader is a nice plus. Dang it, time to do more research. I wanted the GET, but already have the vortex also. It is good, but hasn’t completely solved then flameout. Sorry so long, just thinking out loud.. Your vid was very helpful. I hadn’t even considered the AIM until seeing yours run so finely tuned off the bottom like that. Looks like it would be a pleasure to ride. Thanks again - great job..

IMO the AiM is the best of the three. The vortex is actually ancient tech inside commanding the high price as they need someone to continue to produce the CPU. The AiM is made by a company who manufactures tech for Formula 1, and is actually pretty techy inside. You can actually tell the AiM has programmed Anti-Stall from the blip test and how it catches itself when you rapidly cut throttle.
The GET had some form of ignition abnormality, sounds very retarded with the elevated exhaust note over the other two and it's ability to keep running at a low RPM.

Talk about lean.... The header on my 2022 450RL will glow after a few minutes warming up. I've only put 21 miles on it stock because my dark-imaginings have me wondering about the wear and tear on the drive train due to the jerkiness of the engine, stock.
No worries. I've got a GET, ready to install from Taco Moto. I got the GET due to it's wifi programmability, but I'm starting to think the AIM might have been the better choice (I'm 60, my bones don't heal like they did when I was 30). sounds like the GET needs more fuel. a richer mix will help stop flameout and bogging when the throttle is wicked open at idle. a good tip is before you start swapping ecu, or tunning, run it stock
with a way to monitor engine temp, I used a heat strip on top of the left radiator on dirt bikes. get a fill where the temp will run on your test loop then start swapping ecu's or tunning it and you may see as you start turning up the fuel mix the engine temp should go down and when you get to the point its stumbling or fills like you are dragging the rear break its Too Rich. make note of the temp. it should be way down if you don't have a thermostat. A thermostat will mess this whole method up. and back to carb 2 strokes when changes main jets you will see a big swing in temp by swapping the main from say a 165 to a 175. let the temp get too low because of a rich mixture and it will foul a plug or just run really crappy, too lean and the motor will start to get hot and do all sorts of weird things. if you are having flameouts chances are the motor is too lean at idle to about a quarter throttle. thanks for the comparison of the ecu's.

I've tried it but honestly didn't notice much difference, and the one-pager instruction sheet didn't say anything about it. Thanks John, very good review and nice audio. You mentioned testing these ECU's with a normal/power map. I've been riding/learning with a Vortex in Enduro Map. Do you think the AiM ECU would be good upgrade to my Vortex for technical and really slow speed ridding or should I stay with Vortex in Enduro Map? Also curious if you like using the CRF clutch better with or w/o the 'Judder' spring, gonna try removing that as it never felt very precise to me.

Great content as always John. If your bike runs fine with the Vortex and the stock ECU but has problems with the Get and AiM, I would be inclined to say that there's a problem with the ECUs and not your bike. You mention that you use the "same" maps on each ECU to compare apples to apples. I have a 22 CRF450RL with a Vortex ECU and full Graves Ti system. After many hours of trying different settings I found switch position 4 (power Map 2 -Best power on dyno STD engine + Yosh system +2.5% richer) to be the best with initial trim setting at 5, 5, 5. HOWEVER, the bike was running way too rich. Today I set the trims to 3,4,4 and it transformed the bike. Way more power than before, silky smooth, zero herky jerky throttle and about 47 MPG. I encourage you to try this setting on your bike. I could not believe the improvement over the original 5,5,5 setting.

what you are trying to do with the Throttle blip stall, I test this, by just turning the throttle by like .5mm to see if there is a stumble lean area in the early throttle. If it exists, its normally in that .5mm to 1 mm throttle pull area, so all you have to do is, take 2 fingers and just barely turn the throttle into this area, RPMS should only raise, if they dont raise rpm, stay the same or stumble, then its going to be a pop stall area. Ive had this with stock ecu's, that even have fuel tuners on them and Tps tune combos, simply cant be 100% fixed.
However I found the Vortex 100% Fixes this issue, in my case. I run the test like mentioned above , and the rpms only gain, had a vortex for 2 years and its never pop stalled.
