  • Leah is a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and a full-time coach at Straight Blast Gym of Montana. Leah's martial arts journey was inspired by her mother, and Leah initially delved into Tatsu do karate, achieving her black belt in 2004.
Leah's search for a functional martial arts academy led her to Straight Blast Gym and the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Here, she not only honed her skills, becoming an adult world champion as a blue belt and a multiple-time masters world champion at the black belt level, but also redefined her life's purpose. Leah's story is more than just martial arts, her diverse background ranges from multiple years as an Alaskan Wilderness Ranger to her significant contributions as a science educator for over a decade. These experiences have shaped her unique approach to coaching and her philosophy of life.
Now, as a respected coach, Leah has developed age-specific martial arts curricula for kids and pioneered a women's jiu jitsu team. Her story is not just about physical strength but also about the power of resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of self-improvement.

As a woman and a regular listener, this is one of my favorite episodes. Leah is a role model for girls and women. I wish I had a Leah in my life as a young girl b/c she is the definition of a bas ass and a confident woman. There's a peacefullness (if that's a word) around her as well. I think she should do an online seminar for women (if she hasn't already). Great episode! PS-Andy made me cry with his description of his wife in the very beginning.

Andy, this is one of your best episodes. Leah is so interesting she has accomplished so much but yet extremely humble. She shared her journey and the valuable lessons learned. The video flowed so well, the conversation wasn’t choppy or wandering and you compliment each other well in dialogue. I agree with others that she should be a routine guest, if she can find time. I

Glad to see you continuing to grow your podcast. Love tuning in and discussing ideas and opinions brought up on the podcast with friends and family. Keep fighting the good fight, Mr. Stumpf.

Interesting that Leah assumed she wouldn't have much trouble with a relatively small teenaged male. Pretty awesome how physically confident & competent she was/is (I'm referring to her telling the story of being held down as a white belt by a boy who was 20lbs lighter than she was), but that encounter was a useful eye-opener for her. My lovely wife & I are raising (5) kids who are all better than everyone else's kids, & they include (3) boys/man ranging from 14yo -- 22yo, & Daddy mixes it up with them once in a while, as a 48yo man. It's a lot. Men, even teenaged boys, are simply on an entirely different/higher physical level than women are...toss in testosterone & that's why violent crime is a thing. A "scrawny" teenaged boy can be a lot like a chimpanzee...much stronger than they look, with a distinctive odor.

College advice, go to community college first, it's cheaper, develops you for the structure, you can earn alot of credits hours that you can transfer thus saving money and while at community college, figure out what you want to do. I went to community college where I completely changed major, then earned a scholarship for university, transferring a ton of credits so I didn't have to take at University. I graduated with NO debt. I got a cost effective education that I build my career on. Utilize community college. Great episode with your wife. thank you.

That's what I'm doing now for nursing. I'll (hopefully) graduate with no or very little debt through this route. But it's still insane that people like highschool science teachers, who are so important for a well functioning society, are expected to get Master's degrees which cost a FORTUNE (even using the method you mentioned) and then you get really crappy pay while dealing with high interest rate student loan debt, high costs of living, and a high stress job. Like, we really need good teachers in this country, we need to find a better way..IMO

If it’s a gym with a good culture you won’t regret it. I’m a relatively smaller woman and there are mostly men where I train. Rolling with them is very hard and sometimes quite intimidating, but never feels cruel or demeaning. Accidental injuries can happen and you have to be careful, but I’ve found most to be courteous and respectful as partners, even when they’re “crushing” you. (And no one should be “crushing” you at the beginning.) Go for it and just let people know if you’re uncertain-they’ll accommodate! It builds trust. You can always pull yourself out if it feels overwhelming.
