My 2016 X1 purchased new, is still like new after eight years and had the radiator changed in 2018. Now a CEL with similar warning. Scheduling a radiator repair at BMW dealer. Job is over $4,500 US quoted by Dealer to change radiator, they said they will discount to slughtly more than half. This doesn't include water pump. The engine bay is ridiculously cramped and the labor and expertise intensive and as a result expensive. Car SUV/SAV has less than 5,000 miles. Will not ever buy a BMW or any European vehicle.
Great vid. I am a tech at bmw, about to do this under warranty. While waiting for parts to arrive, it was great to see this to see what I am getting into, luckily this looks fairly simple. Thanks!
I did this by following your every instruction. Its perfect and not as intimidating as it looks. You just need the front right lifted. Also you do not have to take out the AC compressor but just unbolt it and move it out the way. My water pump bearing was toasted.
Had one of these come into the shop not too long ago and I pressure tested the system and was informed by a close friend from bmw that the water pumps leak notoriously on these engines. I have to admit I was a bit unsure of this job and it ended up going to another shop. Unfortunately she informed me that the place where she had taken it to only recommended that she replace the washer fluid reservoir. I’m sure it’ll be back soon with another leak. There’s no way it’s the reservoir but it did buy me time to see you post this video and give me some insight of what I was facing. Definitely ready to take on this project now!
Just changed the thermostat on a b38 in a Mini Cooper after throwing a stuck open fault code. Not a nice job at all but doable. Worth noting tho after changing the stat a map thermostat adaptation reset is also required. It’s just a shame BMW is not forth coming with information on there cars to help the DIY enthusiasts. Just want to say thanks for the video. Just what I needed as I dove into my wife's X1 with the B48 engine. Changed out the coolant hoses and replaced the oil filter housing with a full metal version. Hopefully the leaks go away.

What an amazing video. I just came back from the BMW dealer here in Edmonton where I live and they told me my water pump/t'stat housing was leaking. They are looking at $2400 CAD for the repair. My car has 134.000 KMS. While I was googling the problem I found your video and honestly it does seem like a lot of work for a DYI one. Is it very common to replace this part in these X1 2018 xdrive 28i models? with the amount of kms I have is it something to expect? Good afternoon, please help me to solve the problem. I have BMW X1 F46. I encountered the following problem: I start the car, turn on the air conditioner, from the driver's side and from the front, blows cool air, and from the passenger side warm air. Drove, refilled freon began to blow everywhere cold air. Now this problem, start the car, turn on the air conditioner blows cool air all right. I start to drive, from everywhere gives warm air, when I stop, stand 1 minute, starts to blow again cold. What can be the problem who faced?
Omg 😱. That is super complicated and a very expensive repair. What was wrong with a simple separate thermostat thats been fitted to cars for many years. No wonder you guys in the US call this stuff euro trash. 🇬🇧 . Ill stick with my super simple peugeot and never go near a BMW / Mercedes/ Audi etc. well done Mario 👍👍. .
Mario, i miss your intro song. I always wanted to be a car mechanic, but I ended up being an electrician. So I'm a follower who has seen all your videos, understand about sensors and electric troublehooting, but bas never changed a spark plug.
Is this the same or similar to the 2014 mini? The engine looks identical b46 2.0 turbo. I had to drop the engine to get the water pump out. I did it in my driveway. Most frustrating thing I've ever done. There's no space to do anything.
Is there a way to reset the valvetronic actuator without the scanner? If not, what model scanner do you use from Autel? I do have a Foxwell scanner that can reset adaptations, but unsure if this will accomplish the task. Thanks!
I made a dumb comment about disconnecting the cooling fan hence the edit. My question is as a professional doing this job how much time does filming add to an 8 hour repair job? Also sage advice for any diy viewer deciding to tackle this job. The big drawbacks I see are 1 ) lift is essential.2) refrigeration recovery especially on the latest models using the more advanced refrigerants.
