    I love Auchentoshan, American Oak was my first scotch and i still find different flavors the deeper into that bottle I get (on my second bottle,at 35$ this dram is a steal)
    Love the 18, the blood oak ,and the creamy taste of the three wood. Smooth is the word for this distillery. The 12 is also an outstanding dram for 40$, smooth and creamy, and a nice lasting finish.

    I have been a fan of Auchentoshan for about 7 to 8 years now. The Triple Wood is a fantastic dram. Especially for the price. I recommend the American Oak to any Bourbon lover interested in the Scotch world. If you can find a bottle of the Bartenders Malt, get it. Lots of chocolate and caramel. Great dessert Scotch and fantastic pairing with a cigar.

    I personally really like Auchentoshan. The triple wood is great. I really enjoy the Heartwood and the old 10yr as well. I love going to bars that still have the 10yr. I enjoy oily whiskey so for me and all other lowlands. Bladnoch, Aisla Bay, Littlemill, Glenkiechie, Cameronbridge, and Girvan are all good in my book.

    You forgot to add that Auchentoshan was actually Founded by Irish refugees in 1825 (maybe 1823), that may explain the triple distilled & the skew towards a more fruity & fragrant notes.

    When I first tried the 12 yo, I was kind of neutral on it, but after about 1/2 way down the bottle and 6 months later, it took on a subtle light smoke/incense note that I really enjoyed.

    I like the flavor notes you spoke of, but I'm not a fan of any whiskey with an oily flavor note. I Love the peet Scottish Whiskey's, because it helps clean overbearing caramel or honey off the pallet. Blackened Whiskey is my favorite American Whiskey, because of it's smoothness, flavor notes and smokiness from it being aged in charred brandy casks. Johnnie Walker Black Label and Buchanan's Deluxe are my favorite Scottish Whiskey's, I'm still looking for a different one to become my third favorite Scottish Whiskey, Glenfiddich missed that mark for me, but that's why I watch your Scottish Whiskey videos often. Perhaps drinking this on the rocks, or using it to make a Whiskey Lemonade would fit it perfectly. Cheers man.

    I received a bottle of Auchentoshan 12 as a gift several years ago. While it was drinkable I would not go out and buy another bottle as I thought it rather 'meh'. There are too many more personal favorites that I keep on hand. But I truly enjoyed your review, as always.

    Wow! Thank you for the review! I'm flattered! Great review and yes I do agree that the price for the quality scotch is very tempting. And yes it's not very complicated and btw ppl who are not in whiskey drinkers at all once try the AUCHENTOSHAN neat and they love it! Especially ladies! Go figure why!!)))
    Also I find very slight blue berry hint on the taste which is not that long anyway.
    PS we went to Italy to celebrate Anna's birthday. Spent 9 days there. NEVER seen people drinking whiskey neat there!!
    Thanks again for the review! You're great!

    Excellent review. I bought a bottle of Auchentoshan 12 last month. It's pretty decent but frankly I've tried far better whiskies in the same price range such as Arran 10, Singleton 12, Glengoyne 10 and Glenfarclas 19.

    Deanston 14, Old Pulteney 15yr, Clynelish 14yr, and Highland Park12 yr are my go too scotch... I've only tried the triple-wood from Auchentoshan. Just one word, surprising good juice for under $50.

    The Triple Wood is among my absolute favorites. I just bought a bottle of the 12 year old but haven't opened it yet.

    I bought a whiskey from the tiny Hardware Distillery in Hoodsport, WA recently and it has a unique smell - just tried the Auchentoshan 12 for the first time tonight and I get that same primary note although not as strongly. To be honest my first impression is silage, if you know what that smells like. I'm hoping I'll like it better as time passes.

    Auchentoshan is SMOOOOOOOTH! For some strange reason some people (such as Ralfy) have an objection to using "smooth" has a descriptor. I don't know why. Maybe if they shaved their head they'd like the word.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 років тому +1

      I think that has a lot to do with it! My head is as smooth as this whisky

    Great Review as Always!
    Had the 12 at a bar once. Was not impressed.
    I'll try it again someday maybe the Triple Wood.

    I like a nice oily Auchentoshan... I tried this expression some five years ago, and I didn't like it at the time in favor of the Classic, which is a lot like the current American Oak... I will be coming back to this one in the New Year to see how much my palate has changed to like it more or less...

    This was my first ever Single Malt. So for that reason I have a soft spot for it.
    I think it’s a good whiskey especially for its price. Of course there are better whiskeys but for the price I think it’s right.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 років тому

      That's pretty interesting to start with Auchentoshen. What made you choose it?

    • @theryan519

      The Whiskey Dic Word of mouth honestly! One of my friends is a big scotch guy (I’m more of a Bourbon guy), and he had some of this at his home bar. Gave it a try and definitely enjoyed it 👍

    Nice to se Auchentoshan getting a bit of love :) Most of their bottlings are decent but the three wood is downright amazing at a low cost.
    I am very curious about the oilyness you describe. I have a Coopers reserve (14y Auchentoshan) I can try out later to see if I get a lot of oilyness. But I wouldn't expect to. Most of what I know about oily mouthfeel and whisky production would tell me that Auchentoshan wouldn't have much of it. Do you have an idea about how it ends up so oily?
    Cheers

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 років тому +1

      I dont but I hear a lot of people saying that lowland scotch tend to have a "note" that is similar... I think that's the oiliness I'm picking up.
      Certainly gives me that mouthfeel

    I bought that whisky once in France, it was smooth and nice, but what I didn't like, it has caramel colour that also sweetens the taste. I would rather prefer true transparent color and true taste than sweetened one. Nevertheless was worth buying.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 років тому +1

      I can appreciate that, however you should know that the caramel coloring has no taste. (Some would disagree with that, but it's flavorless)

    It's the oiliness that puts me off Auchentoshan. I find that oiliness takes any smooth edges off it making it very harsh. I'm glad you did this review Bill, and I'm glad to hear that it's not only me who struggles with this (I should drink with your friends 😄😄). I'll actually be dropping my review of this whisky on Wednesday, but it's not quite so glowing. I also found it hard to find anything intetesting to say about the distillery so I just gave up. Glad you did yours first 😄. Keep up the good work.

    I like it but auchentoshen has a real tangerine citrus which takes it to the verge of sharp/acidic then becoming sweet oaky and creamy

    • @atb8660

      Actually it’s almost orange rind

    Triple wood is fantastic. But I love the 12 year. Surprised you didnt get cherry cough syrup though.

    • @TheWhiskeyDictionary
      @TheWhiskeyDictionary  5 років тому +1

      For me that was overpowered by the citrus notes and general sherry

      @@TheWhiskeyDictionary a fair statement! Thanks for the reply. I definitely get some fall spice as well (cinnamon, clove etc) but that may be the cherry notes messing with me

    Triple wood was fine. The 12 is rather bland. Maybe too low alcohol to deliver any real flavor.

  • @jamescostigan3721
    @jamescostigan3721 Рік тому

    Not bad, but rather bland, for me. I won't buy again. Might be better if bottled at a higher strength.
