I had an infestation of goose grass and crab grass the last three seasons, starting with season 2 after laying my Zenith zoysia sod. I attempted to control them with herbicides, but it was a constant struggle and I ended up with brown dead spots for a significant portion of the late growing season, from the dead crab grass. This year, in late winter / early spring, I started walking my lawn and pulling them manually while they were small. Regular mowing made them easy to spot as the season progressed, and I pulled them manually a couple times each week into early summer. This drastically reduced the number of plants I had to battle, and allowed me to stay ahead of the spread. This season is the best my Zenith Zoysia lawn has ever looked! Well, it was until we had 6+weeks without significant rain. 😂
I like hearing when people develop their own plans and methods, good going! I agree, mowing and a willingness to hand pull are totally effective (and satisfying).
I am so grateful to you for this nice exclamation and very thorough and enlightening. There's a grassy weed growing up in the lawn taken care of and the applications on my phone or saying anything from smooth Crabgrass to Green Foxtail to Goosegrass. The key point in your lecture was showing how it bunches. Grassy weed that I'm looking at is not a bunch of grass but rather it is growing by a single stem per plant.
Goosegrass is GREAT! My pet hens love that stuff, so I encourage it to grow in the henyard. I'd noticed them nibbling at it and wondered what they'd do with a whole bowl of the stuff--and they went WILD! So I go out in the yard with a little pair of scissors and a platter to harvest the seedheads, then sit on my porch frisking the seeds off the stalks with my thumbnail. It's so pleasant to do. The goosegrass springs up by August and is gone in a couple months. It's the last of the season, so I'm making sure they get the full measure of pleasure from this bird-friendly crop. Oddly, it doesn't grow much elsewhere in my neighborhood. It's taught me about the wide variety of distinct biomes all around me.
Goose grass took over my side yard even with reel cutting twice a week at .75 inches. And two applications of spectracide crabgrass control in six week time span. Seeing 40% improvement but hitting it again with spectracide.
Keep at it! Some weeds take a lot of persistence, but you'll get there. You're on the right track by keeping it mowed to prevent it from going to seed and spreading further. Also, stay vigilant with your pre-emergent herbicide program in September, February, and April.
Great information. This was the first year I have goose grass. Sounds stupid but it's fun to pull. When you grab it right under the wagon wheel and get all the stems it comes up pretty easy in moist soil. I would pull one and 5 more would show up 2 days later. I have a 3 acre lawn and it only grows in one area about 200 square ft by my sidewalk. I live in South Mississippi. Will Prodiamine keep it from germinating? I enjoyed your presentation. Keep it up
Hi Shane, yes, Prodiamine will work. Apply it in September and early winter (when the Forsythia bushes bloom indicates the soil temperature is correct, so use Forsythia as your signal).
best way I have found to get rid of goose grass is by using a propane torch. hit the center of the weed with the torch and a few days after go back and pull the dead goose grass and put down seed. best to do this in the fall. then as she said get your preemergent down early in the spring
This is helpful information but I need the herbicide info. Telling me to hire a pro isnt an option. Im fighting a neighbors lawn that is full of the stuff.
There are herbicides that work on Goosegrass that only a licensed pro have access too. I pull mine up by hand/shovel. You can also spray it with a kill-all herbicide but that will kill that spot in your lawn too. If you have a warm season lawn, that spot will grow back to repair itself or you can reseed your lawn if you have a cool season lawn. Since goosegrass is an annual, you can spread pre-emergent herbicide to stop it from germinating in your lawn from the seeds in your neighbor's lawn. If you spread pre-emergent in February, April, and September if you're in the Southeast, then that will help to significantly reduce goosegrass populations in your lawn.

Revolver worked for me on my Goose Grass in my Zoysia, but I’m trying to avoid post emergents going forward.

I have had pretty good success with Image All in one herbicide, & did not harm my Bermuda grass!
Thanks for chiming in!

Dismiss or generic will kill it in bermuda and zoysia. the chemical is sulfentrazone.
Thanks for the info guys
You bet! Thanks for letting us know you liked it.
You're in Atlanta, right? I follow you on IG so it's cool to see your comment here!
Fantastic! Thank you!

I use tenacity on this
No wonder my dogs love to eat it.!
simple cheap speedzone can help. mix that with dismiss and have some decent control.
Your awesome thank you so much!
You said February for preemergent but did not state your location. Where are you Iocated?
We're in the Southeast, United States. In AL, GA, NC, SC, and TN
Thanks for the identification of goose and crab grasses.
Though many people don't care about false gods!
She wasn't promoting anything! For some, the scientific latin name origins is an interesting history lesson. I liked the etymology knowledge!

Looking at another video goose grass looked completely different
If you have more details to share, that would be interesting.
Fire work great at killing goose grass!
