Thank you so much for this demonstration! I was so worried after seeing my pattern call for a bunch of LOF strips. This made it much easier for me to understand and prevent myself from cutting incorrectly.
Thank you - I’m embarking on my 1st quilt and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out the correct way to cut my strips. You have made it look so easy I feel confident now to have a go - wish me luck 👍🏻
Thank you. Learnt a lot from your video. Usually squaring up has delayed me starting a project because it was so daunting and I usually ended up in a great big mess of fabric and hoping for the best. Thx.
Thank you, this video was very helpful! I got really overwhelmed when I unfolded my fabric and saw how *huge* it was compared to the off-cuts and quarters I was used to, and mine is only a yard! (really tall though, taller than me and I'm 5ft 8!)
Thank You!!!!! This answers how you make long borders etc. How did you become interested in quilting? It's every woman's dream to meet a dude who likes to Quilt!
Hi, Bill and Weeks, Recently I looked up your video guide to accurately cutting strips, especially long ones. I was cutting borders and a variety of sashing strips for a t-shirt quilt, and fused cotton knits for many different sized blocks. I really appreciated the hint to write the size of the strip or block on an index card kept close for easy reference as you cut. Brilliant! Plus your rulers are wonderful, I love them! (I bought my set at the Madison show, when you had just received them from manufacturing. I was very lucky that day!) As I did some repeated cut sizes, I put each size I needed on one page of a small notepad, and was able to flip back and forth to the page I needed for each cut. Thanks for your help! Stay well until we outlast this virus. Jeanne B.
Thanks so much Jeanne for your feedback. So glad that our techniques have been helpful to you. We will miss seeing you in Madison this year but hope you'll join us for the virtual version!
Thanks! I came across this video again now, after i cut 4 strips all going the wrong way. Im finishing up a quilt that got left behind 35 years ago by adding borders. I planned on cutting 2 strips for each of 4 sides, then putting batting in between each strip and free motion quilting each set and adding them to quilt. Now that im starting it, i think im crazy. The quilts too long and too narrow but I cant leave it in the storage bin
I always have problems with borders and sashing strips stretching when cut on the crosswise grain. So this means I have to buy at least 2 extra yards of each fabric used for borders and sashing. This would solve my problem but at $10-$20 per yard, that gets expensive. Guess I'll have to try this next time. Thank you.
This is my big concern after watching this. I have difficulty with cutting accuracy anyway. I came to watch this since I have 108" fabric for the backing, however, wanted to use it for borders too. 108" is great for backing, but not so great for cutting borders straight. (I usually cut selvage to selvage.)
Great tip. I want to add 3 narrow strips - 1.2', 2.5' and 3.5' wide- along the length of the backing for my quilt top. The length of my quilt is 84", and longarm quilter recommends leaving 12" extra length - so my narrow strips need to be 100" each since this will be the length of the backing. What is the best way to cut and sew such long strips and keep everything straight and avoid wonky-ness in the cutting and sewing? Any thoughts?
Each fold introduces the potential for error. If you do fold it a second time it is essential that the two folds are parallel to one another. We find it easier and more accurate to move the ruler.
So good to see how you cut your yardage for quilts much appreciated as it’s been many years since I’ve made a quilt - thank you
Glad it was helpful.
This was the only information I could find on how to cut a LONG piece of fabric. Very helpful!. Thank you.
Glad it helped. I made this video rather spontaneously hoping it could help other quilters.
Thank you, this was just what I needed

Thanks for the great tutorial! I always get nervous when cutting lengthwise for a border and need a refresher!
Awesome thank you.
You're welcome!
Thank you for this useful information!
Thank you for this! I'm making my first pleated skirt, but the idea of cutting out 4 yards of 16" sounded dreadful! You've saved me much worrying
Thanks, this helped to relieve my anxiety about cutting my long border strips!
Thank you for your advice! I couldn't figure out how I was going to cut long straps straight
Glad the video was helpful. Once you understand the concept, it's fairly straightforward.
Thank you!!!

THANK YOU! WONDERFUL!!!!! Quilting for years. I always have the dreaded V.....so tired of it......trying this method next time!!!
Just in time. I'm about to cut some very long sashing strips.
Excellent! Glad it was helpful.
Why not just fold it again? Instead of moving the ruler?
Each fold introduces the potential for error. If you do fold it a second time it is essential that the two folds are parallel to one another. We find it easier and more accurate to move the ruler.
